Some Aspects of Ecology of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacepede) in River Niger, Nigeria

A study on the food and feeding habit of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus （Lacepede） was conducted in River Niger within the region of Oshimili local government area of Delta State Nigeria. A total of 90 specimens were collected with the help of fishermen using gill net, cast net and traps. The fish samples were immediately taken to the laboratory for analysis. Morphometric characteristics such as weight, length, condition factor, egg weight, Gonado Somatic Index （GSI） and sex ratio were determined. The stomach content was analyzed using numerical method to determine the food content. The total length of the fish sampled ranged from 14.40-44.60 cm, while the standard length varied from 11.00 cm to 47.00 cm and the fish body weight ranged between 19.00 g to 503.20 g. Sex ratio 1 female to 1 male was observed. The mean condition factor for both male and female obtained was 1.67. Of all the 90 fishes sampled, none had empty gut representing 100%. The major food items were phytoplankton, plant part and Detritus. Out of 41 females sampled, only 17 had eggs and the eggs were matured at stage IV.

Growth and Biochmical Studies of Mrigal fish (Cirrhinus mrigala) fed Graded Levels of Oil

A 45-day experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, digestive enzymes activity and biochemical response of Cirrhinus mrigala fed graded levels of oil. Three isonitrogenous purified diets （6%, 8% and 10% of oil） were formulated. A total of 108 juveniles of Cirrhinus mrigala （5.95±0.25） g were equally distributed in triplicate groups in nine plastic tanks of 100 L capacity and fed under natural light cycle. Growth performance of the fish significantly reflected the effect of inclusion levels of oil tested but the diet with 8% lipid had the best significant growth performance [% weight gain, feed Conversion Ratio （fCR） and Specific Growth Rate （SGR）], across different experimental groups. Levels of secretion of digestive enzymes in the fish fed different experimental diets resulted in significant values of （p〈0.05） amylase and lipase, while Aspartate transaminase （AST）, Alanine transaminase （ALT）, Lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） and Malate dehydrognnase （MDH） values in the muscle and liver decreased significantly （f〈0.05） as the levels of oii in the diet increased. However, serum biochemical parameters did not record any significant difference 6o〉0.05） with the exception of the total lipid across diets. The study confirmed the inclusion effect of graded levels ofoil in juvenile Mrigal diet, but the inclusion should not be more than 8% to avert growth depression.

Quality of Health Care in Resource Limited Settings-Patients’ Satisfaction Survey at a Mission Hospital in South East, Nigeria

Introduction: Quality healthcare is a major contributor to health disparities and inequalities in resource limited settings. Patient satisfaction remains an important and valuable method of assessing the quality of care. Aim: This study assessed patients’ satisfaction with quality of inpatient clinical care in a mission hospital in a semi urban setting. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study carried out on 140 inpatients at a mission hospital in Afikpo, South East Nigeria. Data was collected using pretested structured questionnaires designed on a five-point likert scale with 1 indicating the lowest and 5 indicating the highest scale. Knowledge of factors contributing to quality of care and satisfaction in the following domains: patient-staff relationship, patient-staff (doctors/nurses) communication, facility convenience, technical aspect of care (availability of equipment, drugs and adequacy of staff) and overall general satisfaction were measured. Operationally, patients who rated 3 points and above were considered satisfied while ratings less than 3 points were considered dissatisfied. Results: Knowledge of factors contributing to quality of care was 4.65 ± 0.48. General satisfaction rated 4.22 ± 0.52. Specifically, the different domains had the following scores: inter personal relationship 4.28 ± 0.81, technical aspect of care (availability of drugs, equipment and medical personnel) 4.29 ± 0.57 and facility convenience 4.21 ± 0.51. Conclusions: Knowledge of factors contributing to quality of care and overall patients’ satisfaction with inpatient care were good and comparable with patients’ satisfaction with tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. Mission hospitals may serve as excellent alternatives to government hospitals in resource limited settings to promote health equity across populations.

Background:This research focuses on herbal medicine,an ancient healthcare practice,exploring the antibacterial attributes of fresh and dried leaf extracts from Momordica charantia(commonly known as Bitter melon)and Vernonia amygdalina(Bitter leaf).The study specifically investigates their effects on different bacterial strains associated with ***:four enteric bacterial isolates-Klebsiella pneumoniae,Salmonella typhi,Escherichia coli,and Proteus mirabilis-were obtained from the Medical Laboratory Unit at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilishan-Remo,Ogun *** screening and antibacterial testing were conducted using standard biochemical techniques and the Punch-hole agar diffusion method,***:Qualitative phytochemical screening of the plant extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids,glycosides,and saponin in both plants,excluding *** were identified only in Vernonia *** these phytochemicals,neither plant displayed inhibitory effects on the tested bacterial isolates(Escherichia coli,Proteus mirabilis,Klebsiella pneumoniae,and Salmonella typhi)when tested individually or in ***,combining the fresh and dried leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina with a standard drug resulted in smaller mean zone diameters of inhibition(Escherichia coli range:14 mm–16 mm,Proteus mirabilis range:31 mm–35 mm,Klebsiella pneumoniae range:13 mm–22 mm,and Salmonella typhi range:35 mm–38 mm)compared to the drug tested alone(16 mm–45 mm).Conclusion:Despite previous indications of antibacterial properties in various extracts of *** and *** leaves,our study presents contradictory results,prompting the need for further investigation despite the presence of significant phytochemicals.
