Typhoon-and pollution-driven enhancement of reactive bromine in the mid-latitude marine boundary layer

Tropospheric reactive bromine is important for atmospheric chemistry,regional air pollution,and global *** studies have reported measurements of atmospheric reactive bromine species in different environments,and proposed their main sources,***-salt aerosol（SSA）,oceanic biogenic activity,polar snow/ice,and *** and other strong cyclonic activities（***） induce abrupt changes in different earth system processes,causing widespread destructive ***,the role of typhoons in regulating reactive bromine abundance and sources remains ***,we report field observations of bromine oxide（BrO）,a critical indicator of reactive bromine,on the Huaniao Island（HNI）in the East China Sea in July *** observed high levels of BrO below 500 m with a daytime average of9.7±4.2 pptv and a peak value of ～26 pptv under the influence of a *** field measurements,supported by model simulations,suggest that the typhoon-induced drastic increase in wind speed amplifies the emission of SSA,significantly enhancing the activation of reactive bromine from SSA *** also detected enhanced BrO mixing ratios under high NOxconditions（ppbv level） suggesting a potential pollution-induced mechanism of bromine release from *** elevated levels of atmospheric bromine noticeably increase ozone destruction by as much as ～40% across the East China *** the high frequency of cyclonic activity in the northern hemisphere,reactive bromine chemistry is expected to play a more important role than previously thought in affecting coastal air quality and atmospheric oxidation *** suggest that models need to consider the hitherto overlooked typhoon-and pollution-mediated increase in reactive bromine levels when assessing the synergic effects of cyclonic activities on the earth system.

With defined culture protocol, human embryonic stem cells （hESCs） are able to generate cardiomyocytes in vitro, therefore providing a great model for human heart development, and holding great potential for car- diac disease therapies. In this study, we successfully generated a highly pure population of human cardio- myocytes （hCMs）（〉95% cTnT＋） from hESC line, which enabled us to identify and characterize an hCM-specific signature, at both the gene expression and DNA meth- ylation levels. Gene functional association network and gene-disease network analyses of these hCM-enriched genes provide new insights into the mechanisms of hCM transcriptional regulation, and stand as an informative and rich resource for investigating cardiac gene func- tions and disease mechanisms. Moreover, we show that cardiac-structural genes and cardiac-transcription fac- tors have distinct epigenetic mechanisms to regulate their gene expression, providing a better understandingof how the epigenetic machinery coordinates to regulate gene expression in different cell types.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the rates of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies and outcomes in patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Spain from 2003 to 2013. METHODS: We collected all cases of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies using national hospital discharge data and evaluated the annual cholecystectomy rates stratiifed by T2DM status. We analyzed tendency for in-hospital mortality (IHM). We also analyzed the impact of T2DM on IHM in patients who underwent cholecystectomies. RESULTS: We identiifed 611 533 cholecystectomies (71.3%laparoscopic) in the patients, in whom 78 227 (12.8%) patients had T2DM. The rates of open cholecystectomies were 3-fold higher (130.0/105 vs 41.1/105) in patients with T2DM than in those without T2DM, and the rate of laparoscopic cholecys-tectomies was almost 2-fold higher (195.2/105 vs 111.8/105) in patients with T2DM. Endoscopic response to tumor necrosis factor inhibitors predicts long term benefits in Crohn's disease

BACKGROUND Identifying predictors of therapeutic response is the cornerstone of personalized *** To identify predictors of long-term mucosal healing(MH) in patients with Crohn's disease(CD) treated with tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α) *** Prospective single center study. Consecutive patients with clinically active CD requiring treatment with a TNF-α inhibitor were included. A baseline segmental CD Endoscopic Index of Severity(CDEIS) ≥ 10 in at least one segment or the presence of ulcerations were required for inclusion. Clinical, biological and endoscopic data were obtained at baseline, weeks 14 and 46. Endoscopic response(ER) was defined as a decrease ≥ 50% from baseline CDEIS and MH as partial CDEIS ≤ 5 in all *** Of 62 patients were included. At baseline, median CD Activity Index and CDEIS were 201 and 6.7, respectively with a significant reduction after one year of treatment(53 and 3.0 respectively, P < 0.001). At week 14, 56% of patients achieved ER and 34% MH. At week 46, the corresponding percentages were 52%and 44%. Baseline disease characteristics or biomarkers did not predict MH. A decrease from baseline CDEIS at week 14 of at least 80% was the best predictor of MH at week 46(59% sensitivity and 91% specificity; area under the curve =0.778).CONCLUSION Clinical and biomarker data are not useful predictors of response to TNF-αinhibitors in CD, whereas ER to induction therapy, defined as 80% reduction in global CDEIS, is a robust predictor of long-term MH. Achievement of this endoscopic endpoint may be considered as a therapeutic target for anti-TNF-αtherapy.

Comparison of Antioxidant Activities of Silver Nanoparticles and Methanol Extracts of Three Indigenous Nigeria Herbal Seeds

The antioxidant of seeds was carried out using extracts from methanol and Silver Nanoparticles from the spice. The SEM shows the shapes, dispersion and agglomeration of the sample, while the EDX confirms the SEM and the presence of some compounds. The FT-IR reveals the AgNPs capping and reducing the particular biomolecule from the functional group for identification. Compounds found in the FT-IR seeds of Capsicum annum are Ag L (Silver iodide), C K (Cyanogen chloride), P K (Phenol). Monodora myristica are Mo L (Molybdenum), Ag L (Silver iodide), C K (Cyanogen chloride), P K (Phenol), Mg K (Magnesium). Piper guineense are Ag L (Silver iodide), Ci K (Potassium chloride), C K (Cyanogen chloride), P K (Phenol). The seeds show that the AgNPS of CA and MM has a better antioxidant activity than the methanol of CA and MM, while the PG methanol has a better activity than the AgNPS PG. The control (Catechin and Galic acid) has a slight overall better DPPH activity than the AgNPS. It is important to note that there is a concentration dependency in CA, MM AgNPS, PG methanol respectively. Notably, at CA methanol, the conc. at 125 was higher than the conc. at 250. Hence, there is need to create a great part in using plant samples for making tabulated or capsulated drugs for treatment of diseases and using plant silver nanoparticles to develop a healthy food/drug preservative package material “smart packaging” that will enhance shelf-life.

Challenges and Needs of National Swimming Federations in the Promotion of Health

This study focuses on the current challenges faced by the National Swimming Federations （NFs） with respect to challenges and needs of their NFs in the promotion of health in their domestic population and elite athletes. A descriptive transversal survey was circulated among the FINA NFs requesting information regarding these challenges and needs. The response rate was 64.9% （135 of the 208 NFs）. A similarity study was conducted （pairing measures method of Rogers-Tanimoto） to obtain 8 groups of NFs organized according to the degree to which their responses were similar to those of the other NFs. The lack of financial resources （95%） was identified as the most significant barrier to health promotion among the NFs. The least common challenges faced by the NFs were the relative importance of swimming as a sport （52%） and the lack of evidence based and best practice guidelines （51%）. Conclusion： Although many NFs face some common barriers to promoting health, those barriers are more significant in some NFs. Therefore, the means to overcome them will vary from NF to NF.

HCS strategy targeting dysregulation of the VHL/HIF pathway for drug discovery

One-third of top-selling drugs are derived from natural products. When only a fraction of the bioactive natural products diversity has been explored, huge opportunities still remain for discovering novel leads for the development of new drugs. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a highly vascular tumour arising from epithelial elements. Mutations in the Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene are responsible for VHL disease and arise in the majority of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) as well as in other types of cancer. Renal carcinoma cell lines with naturally occurring VHL mutations (RCC4 VA) and their genetically matched wild-type VHL (RCC4 VHL) counterparts were seeded onto 96-well plates and allowed to attach overnight. Fungal extracts were tested on both cell lines. Clinically useful antitumor agents were used as positive controls and as reference points to establish the efficacy and selectivity of the new compounds. Renal cell carcinoma cell lines expressing VHL or not were treated with Carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE). The day after cell inoculation, extracts were added and during the following days of incubation, fluorescence intensity was measured as a surrogate marker for cell viability. The most promising extracts selectively inhibited growth of pVHL-defi- cient cells but not of wild-type VHL cells. We used High Content Bio-imaging, a complete cellular imaging workflow that integrates instruments and software to acquire and analyze images, to evaluate their effect. Cell imaging can reveal effects that would be overlooked by other cell assay approaches. This target-based whole cell screen is a new strategy, which ensures cell permeability and target selectivity especially in natural product screening where natural product purification is a labour of extensive work. This approach permitted a dynamic study where fluorescence was measured without affecting cell viability and enabling a better detection of cytotoxic effects such as autophagy, senescence or

Thermal Response to Heat in Buildings with Green Covers for Tropical Climate： Green Facades and Green Roofs

The main aims of this paper were to study and demonstrate the benefits the plant systems can provide indoors in a critical heat day. This study proposed an experimental method to try to understand the thermal response to heat of four different systems： a prototype called control （no vegetation） and three with different combinations of vegetation （green roofs and green facades） installed in a tropical climate region. The experiments were developed in four test cells with dimensions 2.0 m × 2.50 m× 2.71 m. Measurements of internal surface temperatures and internal air temperatures were collected with the use of specific equipment, a data logger （CR1000, Campbell Scientific Inc.）, connected with two multiplexers 32 channels （416AM Campbell Scientific Inc.）. Data were recorded over a year and a critical day heat was selected, which was September 24, *** results show that the use of plant systems in buildings establishes a passive technique in reducing energy consumption because of the high incidence of summer solar radiation which is reduced and simultaneously, it maintains thermal internal conditions more pleasant than external ones, because of the best thermal behaviour, which was observed in the test cell with vegetation on both roofs and facades. The biggest difference between maximum internal air temperatures registered was 2 ℃.

Kohler’s Disease Secondary to Tarsal Pyogenic Arthritis

Kohler’s disease is an osteochondrosis of the tarsal navicular bone. The exact causes of osteochondrosis remain unknown. We report a 4-year-old girl with a haematogenous tarsal arthritis who developed a K?hler’s disease immediately after the infection. It is hypothesised that avascular necrosis of the navicular bone was developed secondary to pyogenic arthritis.
