Objective:To isolate and characterize RNA aptamers that are specific to human CD36 protein using systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment(SELEX)technology to identify candidates for adjunct therapy to reverse the binding of Plasmodiuminfected ***:RNA aptamers were isolated using nitrocellulose membrane-based SELEX and binding analysis was screened using an electrophoretic mobility shift assay and enzyme-linked oligonucleotide ***:Thirteen cycles of nitrocellulose membrane-based SELEX yielded three aptamers(RC60,RC25,RC04)exhibiting high binding against CD36 protein as shown on electrophoretic mobility shift *** sequence analysis revealed a G-quadruplex sequence within all the isolated aptamers that might contribute to aptamer binding and thermodynamic *** specificity assay further showed that RC60 and RC25 were highly specific to *** competitive inhibition assay demonstrated that RC60 and RC25 shared a similar binding epitope recognized by m Ab FA6-152,a specific monoclonal antibody against ***:RC60 and RC25 are promising candidates as anticytoadherence for severe malaria adjunct therapy.

Filamentous fungi are able to accumulate significant amount of metals from their environment. The potential of fungal biomass as agents for biosorption of heavy metals from contaminated sediments is currently receiving attention. In the present study, a total of 41 isolates of filamentous fungi obtained from the sediment of the Langat River, Selangor, Malaysia were screened for their tolerance and uptake capability of copper （Cu） and lead （Pb）. The isolates were identified as Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Trichoderma asperellum, Penicillium simplicissimurn and P. janthinellum. A. niger and P. simplicissimum, were able to survive at 1000 mg/L of Cu（Ⅱ） concentration on Potato Dextrose Agar （PDA） while for Pb, only A. niger survived at 5000 mg/L concentration. The results showed that A. niger, P. simplicissimum and T. asperellum have a better uptake capacity for Pb compared to Cu and the findings indicated promising biosorption of Cu and Pb by these filamentous fungi from aqueous solution. The present study was also determined the maximum removal of Cu（Ⅱ） and Pb（Ⅱ） that was performed by A. niger. The metal removal which occurred at Cu（Ⅱ） 200 mg/L was （20.910 ＋ 0.581） mg/g and at 250 mg/L of PbⅡ） was （54.046 ± 0.328） mg/g.

Temperature variability caused by internal tides in the coastal waters of east coast of Peninsular Malaysia

The effects of tidal currents(i.e., barotropic and internal tides) are important in the biogeochemistry of a coastal shelf sea. The high-frequency of currents and near-bottom temperatures collected in three consecutive southwest monsoon seasons(May, June, July and August of 2013 until 2015) is presented to reveal the role of the tidal currents to the temperature variability in the coastal shelf sea of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia(ECPM),south of the South China Sea(SCS). The results of a spectral density and harmonic analysis demonstrate that the near-bottom temperature variability and the tidal currents are influenced by diurnal(O_1 and K_1) and semidiurnal(M_2) tidal currents. The spectral density of residual currents(detided data) at 5, 10 and 16 m depth also shows significant peaks at the diurnal tidal frequency(K_1) and small peaks at the semidiurnal tidal frequency(M_2)indicating the existence of internal tides. The result of the horizontal kinetic energy(HKE) shows a strong intermittent energy of internal tides in the ECPM with the strongest energy is found at 16 m depth during a sporadic cooling event in June and July. A high horizontal cross-shore heat flux(16 m) also indicates strong intrusions of cooler water into the ECPM in June and July. During the short duration of cold pulse water observed in June and July, a cross-wavelet analysis also reveals the strong relationship between the near-bottom temperatures and the internal tidal currents at the diurnal tidal frequency. The intrusion of this cooler water is probably related to the monsoon-induced upwelling in June. It is loosely interpreted that the interaction between the strong barotropic tides and the steep slope in the central basin of the SCS under the stratified condition in southwest monsoon has generated these internal tides. Hexanoyl chitosan and polystyrene blends are immiscible by the elucidation of the glass transition temperature （Tg） as well as the viscometric and morphological analyses. Selective localization of the lithium salt in hexanoyl chitosan phase as the percolation pathway enhanced the conductivity in the blends as compared to the neat hexanoyl chitosan. The ionic conductivity of a polymer electrolyte is described by σ = enp. Thus, estimation of charge carrier density （n） and mobility （μ） is important in order to assess the performance. In this work, these parameters are calculated using impedance spectroscopy and FTIR.

Faecal sterols as sewage markers in the Langat River,Malaysia:Integration of biomarker and multivariate statistical approaches

The Langat River in Malaysia has been experiencing anthropogenic input from urban, rural and industrial activities for many years. Sewage contamination, possibly originating from the greater than three million inhabitants of the Langat River Basin, were examined. Sediment samples from 22 stations （SL01-SL22） along the Langat River were collected, extracted and analysed by GC-MS. Six different sterols were identified and quantified. The highest sterol concentration was found at station SL02 （618.29 ng/g dry weight）, which situated in the Balak River whereas the other sediment samples ranged between 11.60 and 446.52 ng/g dry weight. Sterol ratios were used to identify sources, occurrence and partitioning of faecal matter in sediments and majority of the ratios clearly demonstrated that sewage contamination was occurring at most stations in the Langat River. A multivariate statistical analysis was used in conjunction with a combination of biomarkers to better understand the data that clearly separated the compounds. Most sediments of the Langat River were found to contain low to mid-range sewage contamination with some containing ＇significant＇ levels of contamination. This is the first report on sewage pollution in the Langat River based on a combination of biomarker and multivariate statistical approaches that will establish a new standard for sewage detection using faecal sterols.

The estimation of glycemic index(GI) of rice-based mixed meal either by using predicted GI(GI_(pred)) or adjusted GI(GI_(adj)) formula is *** study aimed to determine the glycemic response of rice in rice alone or mixed meals and to identify the appropriate formula for estimating the GI of rice-based mixed *** glycemic responses produced by the rice alone(red rice,fragrant white rice or parboiled rice) and the rice-based mixed meals(fried red rice,fried fragrant white rice or fried parboiled rice) which provided 25 g available carbohydrate were assessed in 11 healthy *** determine the measured GI(GImeasured) of rice alone and rice-based mixed meals,participants underwent three repeated tests of a reference food(Glucolin~?).Tests were performed in random order on nine separate visits after an overnight fasting for at least 8 *** glucose at baseline(0 min),15,30,45,60,90 and 120 min from starting the meals was assessed and used to determine the incremental area under the curve(iAUC_(120)).The agreement between GImeasured and the estimation formulae(GI_(pred) or GI_(adj)) were determined using Bland-Altman *** iAUC_(120) after consuming rice alone was significantly higher than the rice-based mixed meals except for fried fragrant rice,which was comparable to the rice alone(P > 0.05).The GI_(measured) values of rice were categorized as medium(61 for parboiled rice,67 for fragrant white rice,and 68 for red rice).GI_(pred)(r = 0.40,P < 0.01) and GI_(adj)(r = 0.41,P < 0.01) were significantly correlated with iAUC_(120).The agreement between GI_(measured) and GI_(adj) is apparent suggesting the usefulness of GI_(adj) in estimating meal GI of rice-based mixed meals.

This work investigated the microstructure evolution, tensile, impact, hardness, and sliding wear properties of an Al–20Mg2Si–2Cu in situ composite treated with different Bi contents. The desired modification of primary Mg2 Si particles was achieved with the addition of 0.4 wt% Bi. Increasing Bi beyond 0.4 wt%resulted in a loss of modification, possibly due to the formation of Al8 MgB iS i4 compound before the precipitation of the primary Mg2 Si. Additionally, the structure of the pseudo-eutectic Mg2 Si was transformed from plate to fibrous, which was consistent with decrease of growth temperature extracted from the cooling curve thermal analysis. Addition of Bi had an effect on the morphology of Al5 Fe Si（β）, Al2Cu（θ） and Al5Cu2Mg8Si6（Q） intermetallic compounds. The tensile strength, elongation percentage, impact toughness, and hardness increased by 6%, 13%, 75%, and 23%, respectively, due to modification of both the primary and eutectic Mg2 Si crystals. The tensile and impact fracture surfaces showed fewer decohered particles in the Bi-treated composite. The enhancement in wear resistance of the Bi-treated composite could be attributed to solid lubricant function of insoluble soft Bi phase and modification effects on Mg2 Si particles.
