Genetic Association Study of KCNB1 Gene with the Susceptibility of Hypertension Related LVH （Left Ventricular Hypertrophy） Patients in Malaysia

LVH （Left ventricular hypertrophy） is an independent risk factor for the development of heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias and stroke. A recent genome-wide association study reported the involvement of a candidate gene namely KCNBI in mechanism for development of LVH in hypertension. This study aimed to replicate the finding by investigating the genetic association of KCNBI gene among the hypertensive LVH patients from Malaysia. We genotyped a SNP （single nucleotide polymorphism） located in KCNBI namely, rs6063397 among 200 subjects consisting of61 LVH and 139 non LVH patients using Sanger sequencing method. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between the L VH susceptibility between the allele and genotype frequencies （P = 0.2719 and 0.4768, respectively）. This finding suggests that KCNBI may not playa role in LVH susceptibility in hypertensive patients in Southeast Asian populations.

Economic well-being and morbidity of the elderly in Malaysia

Studies about the elderly are mostly focused on morbidity and psychological conditions of the elderly. Effects of social relations have been noted to be important for the well-being of an elderly person. Later studies have begun to look at socioeconomic status of the elderly to see its relation to the level of morbidity. This paper is based on a nationwide survey. A total of 10 percent of elderly total population was interviewed to obtain socioeconomic and lifestyle information. A self reporting method was used as it was easiest to obtain the answers from the elderly. A total of 1410 elderly respondents aged 60 and above were interviewed from the regions of northern, eastern, middle and southern Peninsular Malaysia and also from Sabah and Sarawak. The data was analyzed using the SPSS 16. Quantitative analysis based on mean, standard deviation and multiple regressions was done. Findings show that higher morbidity rate lowers ones economic well-being. Females report higher morbidity then males, while those who are married and residing in rural area also reoort lower morbidity.

为评价DNA宏条形码(DNA metabarcoding)技术在海洋生物多样性监测中的应用潜力,本研究中采集了马来西亚马塘红树林保护区(Matang Mangrove Reserve,Malaysia)10个站位(SO1~SO10)浮游动物样品,分别采用宏条形码和形态学鉴定方法分析了浮游动物群落组成和结构。结果表明:以18S rDNA V4区为标志基因的宏条形码方法共鉴定出浮游动物25门88目138属249个操作分类单元(operational taxonomic units,OTUs),而借助光学显微镜的形态学方法仅鉴定出2门6目13属;利用形态学方法鉴定出来的大部分类别(门100%、目83%、属54%)同时也能用宏条形码方法鉴定出来,而宏条形码分子方法鉴定出的大部分类别(门92%、目94%、属95%)却未能利用形态学方法鉴定出来;宏条形码方法根据热点图样本相似性聚类树可将10组浮游动物样本划分为3类(在门和目水平上),即第Ⅰ类(SO1、SO2、SO3和SO6)、第Ⅱ类(SO4、SO7、SO8、SO9和SO10)和第Ⅲ类(SO5),但在属分类水平上,SO4从第Ⅱ类站位划归到了第Ⅰ类中。研究表明:比较两种方法,宏条形码方法不但具有鉴定效率高、花费较低等优点,而且能得到更多的浮游动物种类和丰富度信息;随着DNA宏条形码技术体系的不断完善,数据库不断更新,使得DNA条形码技术的准确性更高,其将在浮游生物多样性评价中具有较高的应用潜力。
