Nocturia: Impact on quality of life in an Egyptian adult population

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effects of nocturia on quality of life (QoL) and to assess the associated effects of sleep problems. Background: Nocturnal urination (nocturia) is such a commonplace occurrence in the lives of many older adults that it is frequently overlooked as a potential cause of sleep disturbance. Methods: The current study was carried out to assess the prevalence of nocturia in elderly males and its impact on sleep quality and QoL. The study enrolled 200 elderly males aged 60 years old and above. All participants were recruited from geriatric clubs in Cairo. All participants in the study were subjected to: comprehensive geriatric assessment, American Urological Association (AUA) score used to measure the severity of nocturia ,assessment of sleep quality using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and assessment of QoL using “SF-12 Short Form Health Survey”. Results: The study showed that the prevalence of nocturia in elderly males aged ≥60 years old was 68% with significant association between nocturia and diabetes mellitus, heart failure, stroke, prostatism, recurrent UTI and diuretic use. As regard sleep quality, the current study showed that the prevalence of poor sleep in the studied subjects is 70.5% with significant association between nocturia and poor sleep quality. Nocturia significantly affects sleep latency, sleep efficiency and daytime dysfunction, high significantly affecting sleep disturbance. Also diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, prostatism, recurrent UTI, osteoarthritis and diuretic use are significantly associated with poor sleep quality. As regard quality of life, the current study showed significant association between nocturia and physical and mental health components of HRQL in the univariate analysis. But after multivariate analysis, nocturia is not an independent risk factor for poor quality of life. Fourteen samples of marble were collected from different factories in Egypt. The samples were crushed, dried in controlled furnace for around twenty four hours, and then stored for five weeks in plastic Marinelli beakers. Concentrations and the U- and Th-bearing minerals were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS).The gamma radiation of the samples was measured, employing high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy with an accumulating time for about 80000 sec. each. From the measured γ -ray spectra, activity concentrations were determined for marble samples 226Ra (37. 6 ± 1.7 - 100.54 ± 3.2 Bq/kg), 232Th (3.57 ± 0.64 - 9.37 ± 1.80 Bq/kg) and 40K (30.68 ± 1.1 – 1196 ± 4.9 Bq/kg). The absorbed dose rates, annual effective dose rates, radium equivalent activities as well as the radiation hazard indices were estimated. The radium equivalent activities (Raeq) are lower than the limit of 370 Bq kg?1 set by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (Exposure to radiation from the natural radioactivity in building materials. Report by a Group of Experts of the OECD, Nuclear Energy Agency, OECD, Paris, 1979) [1]. All obtained results referred to the fact that all the concentrations were within the allowed limits to domestic use. Comparing the results in this work with those published by International Atomic Energy Agency and local and universal researches, it was found that these concentrations were within the allowed limits for agricultural and domestic uses.

The temperature effects on the electrical performance of a large area multicrystalline silicon solar cell with back-contact technology have been studied in a desert area under ambient conditions using the current shunt measuring technique. Therefore, most of the problems encountered with traditional measuring techniques are avoided. The temperature dependency of the current shunt from 5oC up to 50oC has been investigated. Its temperature coefficient proves to be negligible which means that the temperature dependency of the solar cell is completely independent of the current shunt. The solar module installed in a tilted position at the optimum angle of the location, has been tested in two different seasons (winter and summer). The obtained solar cell short circuit current, open circuit voltage and output power are correlated with the measured incident radiation in both seasons and all results are discussed.

AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was carbonitrided using rf plasma with purpose of using low-cost orthopedic implant materials in biomedical applications besides the manufacturing requests. The plasma treatment process was accomplished at low working gas pressure of 0.075 mbar in nitrogen-acetylene gaseous mixture. The plasma-processing time was fixed at 10 min while the plasma-processing power was varied from 450 to 650 watt. The effect of plasma treatment power on the structure, tribological, mechanical, electrochemical and biocompatibility of AISI 316 has been investigated. The structural results demonstrated the formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solutions, chromium nitride, iron carbide and iron nitride phases in the treated samples. The microhardness of the treated layer increases with increasing the processing power to reach a maximum value of approximately 1300 HV0.1 at 600 W which represents more than 6-folds increase in microhardness in comparison with the untreated matrix. The wear and corrosion resistance of the treated AISI 316 were enhanced compared to the untreated one. The friction coefficient was reduced from nearly 0.5 for the untreated substrate to nearly 0.3 for the carbonitrided sample. The surface energy and wettability of the carbonitrided samples were augmented as the plasma-processing power increased. Furthermore, the numbers of grown mesenchymal stem cells are higher for carbonitrided samples compared to the untreated one. The formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solution, chromium nitride, iron nitride and iron carbide hard phases after carbonitriding process is responsible for achieving good mechanical, tribological, biocompatibility and electrochemical properties for AISI 316 alloys.

This paper describes in details a new design of a fully automated multiple output micropotentiometer (?pot). A prototype has been built at the National Institute for Standards (NIS), Egypt to establish this highly improved AC voltage source in the millivolt range. The new device offers three different outputs covering a wide frequency range from only one outlet. This valuably supports the precise sourcing ranges of low AC voltage at NIS. The design and the operation theory of this prototype have been discussed in details. An automatic calibration technique has been introduced through specially designed software using the LabVIEW program to enhance the calibration technique and to reduce the uncertainty contributions. Relative small AC-DC differences of our prototype in the three output ranges are fairly verified. The expanded uncertainties of the calibration results for the three output ranges have been faithfully estimated. However, further work is needed to achieve the optimum performance of this new device.

Removal of Direct Dyes with Cement Kiln Dust

This paper aims to investigate removal of some direct dyes from aqueous solution using cement kiln dust, and monitoring the dye in colored cement kiln dust. Solution with 0.8 g/l concentration was treated with cement kiln dust until the color of dye disappears. The colored cement kiln residue was separate by filtration and dried on microwave oven. The concentration of dye was measured before and after treatment by UV-Vis spectroscopy as well as after washing of colored residue with water. Also, the colored residue was investigated with, XRD, IR and DSC techniques as well as measured the loss on ignition at 450 °C for 2 h. Obtained results showed that cement kiln dust has the power to remove all existing direct dyes and the residue has the same color of dye. When colored residue was washed with water, there was no back diffusion of dye in to water. This may be mainly due to chemical reaction that took place between cement kiln dust and dye. Thus analysis such as IR, XRD and DSC are in agreement with these results.

AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel was treated using rf plasma carbonitriding with the intention of use low-cost orthopedic implant material in biomedical applications. The treatment process was carried at low working gas pressure of 0.075 mbar in nitrogen-acetylene gaseous mixture to form a superficial carbonitrided layer. The samples were treated using rf inductively coupled at a fixed plasma-processing power of 500 W and for a processing time varied from 4 to 20 minutes. The microstructural, mechanical and tribological properties of the untreated and treated samples were studied. The surface hardness is improved by rf plasma carbonitriding to a maximum of 1468 HV0.1 for plasma-processing time of 16 min. To evaluate the biocompatibility performance, the blood was cultured in RPMI media to test the adhesion of blood cells on the untreated and treated samples. It has been found that the blood adhesion on the treated samples is enhanced with increasing the plasma-processing time. The contact angle of the carbonitrided surfaces is decreased to lower values compared to that of the untreated surface. Furthermore, the carbonitrided layer in-vitro corrosion was tested in Ringer’s solution. A degradation in the corrosion resistance was observed for the sample carbonitrided at low plasma processing time of 4 min. However, the corrosion resistance increased to a maximum value at a plasma-processing time of 8 min then gradually decreased with further increase of plasma processing time.

Genetic Variation of <i>hTERT</i>, Leukocyte Telomere Length and the Risk of Breast Cancer: A Case-Control Study in Egyptian Females

Background: hTERT is a key player in telomere biology and its activity is directly related to cell senescence and development of many health-related problems including cancer. Although previous studies investigated this association, the results greatly vary among populations. This study aimed to investigate the association of hTERT gene SNPs and the risk of breast cancer (BC) in Egyptian females and their impact on telomere length (TL). Methods: 218 BC patients and 178 age-matched healthy females were genotyped for hTERT variants rs2736098G > A, rs2735940C > T using PCR-RFLP and for MNS16A tandem repeat using PCR to determine their association with breast cancer risk. Telomere length was measured using qPCR. Results: hTERT rs2736098G > A results indicated that both AG and GG genotypes and G allele were associated with an increased risk of BC. The rs2735940 TT genotype was significantly associated with BC risk, however, the MNS16A tandem repeat region polymorphism didn’t show any correlation with the risk of developing BC. TL showed a significant reduction in BC patients with age 40 years compared with controls. However, it didn’t show a significant difference above the age of 40 years. Conclusions: hTERT rs2736098 and rs27365940, not MNS16A may be associated with an increased risk of developing BC in Egyptian females. Also, telomere length can be a promising screening marker of BC especially in young population.

Nutritional Status and Physical Activities among Army Trainees in Public Institutions of Higher Education in Malaysia

This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status and physical activities of university students that enrolled in military training with the age range of 20 - 34 years. Nutritional status assessment was based on eating habit questionnaires, anthropometric measurements with body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), food intake records for three days and also food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Assessment of physical activities was carried out using physical activities records. Food intake and physical activities data were analyzed using the Nutri-Antro Web (NAW) software. Generally, the subjects were found to have good nutrition knowledge and food intake habits, except for having an irregular meal time (85.0%). Based on BMI studies, 80.0% of male subjects and 78.6% of female subjects were within normal range with the average of 22.94 ± 2.97 kg/m2 and 21.40 ± 3.06 kg/m2 respectively. None of the subjects had WHR above the cut-off point of 1.0 for men and 0.85 for women. The average energy intake for male and female was 2589 ± 687 kcal and 1959 ± 460 kcal respectively. Overall, nutrient intake of both genders fulfilled Malaysia Recommended Nutrient Intake 2005 (RNI) except for the average energy intake of the female subjects. The daily physiccal activities patterns revealed that 73.6% was used for light activities, 19.7% for moderate while 7.4% for heavy activities. The average daily energy expenditure for male subjects (3161 ± 444 kcal) was higher than the female subjects (2492 ± 388 kcal). Both male and female subjects have negative energy balance of -572 kcal and -533 kcal respecttively. Majority of the subjects were categorized as physically active (77.9%). Pearson correlation test showed that physical activities were positively correlated (p < 0.05) with BMI, WHR and nutrient intakes except for the intake of vitamin C. In conclusion, nutritional status and physical activity level of subjects were satisfactory.
