Reviewing the discoverability and accessibility to data and information products linked to Essential Climate Variables

Essential Climate Variables(ECVs)are geophysical records generated from systematic Earth Observations associated with climate variations,changes,and *** products support the data and information needs of international frameworks and policies such as the work of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC)and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC).We map the main networks and initiatives publishing ECVs,by presenting an overview of existing satellite-based ECVs,their general data creation characteristics,discoverability and accessibility methods from an end-user *** investigate key initiatives providing or coordinating access to ECV data records,such as the Global Climate Observing System(GCOS),the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites(CEOS),the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites(CGMS),Joint Working Group on Climate(WGClimate),the Remote Sensing Systems(REMSS),and the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative(ESA CCI).We find that ECV data discovery and access is difficult and time consuming due to the lack of common data and metadata *** addition,the selection of fit-for-purpose data records by end-users requires the implementation of interoperable standards and scalable data infrastructures to allow the generation of tailored applications and datadriven information products in support of decision-making processes.

When defining indicators on the environment,the use of existing initiatives should be a priority rather than redefining indicators each *** an Information,Communication and Technology perspective,data interoperability and standardization are critical to improve data access and exchange as promoted by the Group on Earth *** is following an end-user driven approach by defining Essential Variables(EVs),as an intermediate value between environmental policy indicators and their appropriate data *** international to local scales,environmental policies and indicators are increasingly percolating down from the global to the local *** scientific business processes for the generation of EVs and related indicators can be formalized in workflows specifying the necessary logical *** this aim,GEOEssential is developing a Virtual Laboratory the main objective of which is to instantiate conceptual workflows,which are stored in a dedicated knowledge base,generating executable *** interpret and present the relevant outputs/results carried out by the different thematic workflows considered in GEOEssential(***,ecosystems,extractives,night light,and food-water-energy nexus),a Dashboard is built as a visual *** is a valuable instrument to track progresses towards environmental policies.

This paper aims to create visible light driven ternary photocatalysts using zinc oxide(ZnO),cerium(IV)oxide(CeO_(2)),and carbon xerogel(CX) as constituent *** use of CeO_(2) is based on the creation of direct-Z-scheme heterojunctions with the ZnO and the consequent diminishing of charge recombination,whereas the carbon xerogel inclusion is predicted to minimize bandgap energy,decrease electro n-hole reco mbination,and boost specific surface *** re,the choice of the black-wattle tannin as a carbonaceous precursor was targeted at the development of an environmentally friendly and affordable *** existence of the hexagonal phase of zinc oxide and cubic structure of the cerium(IV) oxide in the ternary material was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,with the latter also suggesting chemical bonding between the ZnO and the CX due to the creation of zinc oxycarbide *** inclusion of the carbon xerogel provokes a significant modification in the morphology of the ternary material,resulting in an increased surface area and smaller particle *** CX/ZnO-CeO_(2) ternary composite obtains the highest photocatalytic efficiency among all the materials studied,degrading 100% of 4-chlorophenol under simulated sunlight and 68% under visible radiation,after 5 *** increased photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between the semiconductors,higher visible light response,and higher specific surface area,as evidenced by the results obtained by active radical scavenging,chronoamperometry,diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,and N_(2) adsorption-desorption isotherms.

The demand to enhance the optical resolution, to structure and observe ever smaller details, has pushed the way towards the EUV and soft X-rays. Induced mainly by the production of more powerful electronic circuits with the aid of projection lithography, optics developments in recent years can be characterized by the use of electromagnetic radiation with smaller wavelength. The good prospects of the EUV and soft X-rays for next generation lithography systems (λ=13.5 nm), microscopy in the “water window” (λ=2.3～4.4 nm), astronomy (λ=5～31 nm), spectroscopy, plasma diagnostics and EUV/soft X-ray laser research have led to considerable progress in the development of different multilayer optics. Since optical systems in the EUV/soft X-ray spectral region consist of several mirror elements a maximum reflectivity of each multilayer is essential for a high throughput. This paper covers recent results of the enhanced spectral behavior of Mo/Si, Cr/Sc and Sc/Si multilayer optics.

Bimetallic cobalt-nickel sulfide nanoparticles anchored on S-,N-codoped holey carbon nanosheets(CoNiS-T@NCFs)with a hydrangea-like morphology,were synthesized via a confinement synthesis route,in which an intercalated LDH precursor was subjected to the interlayer-confined carbonization and host-layer *** phase transformation and structure evolution(e.g.,atom site occupancy,crystallite size,and cell volume)of the CoNi-S-T@NCFs electrocatalysts,as a function of sulfurization temperatures,were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld *** sulfur vacancies effectively enhance the electrocatalytic activity,while the synergistic effect of(Co,Ni)7 S8 alloy and S,N-codoped carbon matrix facilitates the electron transfer and accelerates reaction kinetics,making CoNi-S-900@NCFs an efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).The rich highvalence Co(Ⅲ)and Ni(Ⅲ)of CoNi-S-900@NCFs facilitates the in-situ transformation of the metal(oxy)hydroxides intermediates with high catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction(OER).Thus,with a bifunctional parameter,ΔE,of 0.75 V(E_(j=10,OER)-E_(1/2,ORR)),this electrocatalyst slightly outperforms the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C+RuO_(2)/C catalyst(ΔE=0.76 V)in alkaline *** work demonstrates the influence that the sulfurization temperature has on the relationship between the structure and electrocatalytic performance of bimetallic sulfides prepared by the synthesis strategy using the intercalated LDH *** strategy can be extended to prepare other chalcogenides with binary or ternary transition metals.

Lyotropic liquid crystals(LLCs)produced by the self-assembly of surfactant in water represent an important class of highly ordered soft materials that have a wide range of *** study investigates the LLCs formed by a zwitterionic surfactant(tetradecyldimethylaminoxide,C 14 DMAO)in *** organization of C 14 DMAO within the LLCs was determined based on a detailed analysis of small-angle X-ray scattering measure-ments and polarized microscopy observations of a typical *** to the singe-phase region,which has a hexagonal organization,several two-phase regions were observed,exhibiting the coexistence of hexago-nal/cubic,cubic/lamellar,and hexagonal/lamellar *** phase behavior showed an obvious dependence on temperature,with more pronounced two-phase regions at lower *** the LLCs as a matrix,Au nanospheres,nanoellipsoids,and nanorods were prepared without requiring additional reducing *** three-and one-dimensional Au nanomaterials could be converted to two-dimensional plates via the introduc-tion of a small amount of cationic surfactant to the LLCs,such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide([C 16 MIm]B),which showed pronounced surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity towards solid *** LLCs loaded with CTAB(or[C 16 MIm]B)and HAuCl 4 exhibited slightly different structures and mechanical strength from the original LLCs,thereby forming a new class of highly crowded colloidal materials.

Fluorination of suspended graphene

Suspended graphene is exposed to different fluorine-containing species produced by a plasma source fed with CF4 precursor gas. We investigate the fluorination process by selecting two different kinetic energies for the ions striking the graphene surface. The chemical-bonding environment is discussed, and the control of the graphene-fluorination homogeneity is investigated at the individual graphene sheets. The modifications of the electronic and structural properties are examined by scanning photoelectron microscopy, micro-Raman analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results are compared with those obtained for supported graphene on copper. Suspended graphene provides a quasi-ideal model for investigating the intrinsic properties of irradiated carbon nano-systems while avoiding damage due to backscattered atoms and recoil due to a supporting substrate.
