Because of its simplicity,reliability,and replicability,the Masquelet induced membrane technique(IMT)has become one of the preferred methods for critical bone defect reconstruction in *** it is now used worldwide,few studies have been published about IMT in military *** reconstruction is particularly challenging in this context of care due to extensive soft-tissue injury,early wound infection,and even delayed management in austere *** on our clinical expertise,recent research,and a literature analysis,this narrative review provides an overview of the IMT application to combat-related bone *** presents technical specificities and future developments aiming to optimize IMT outcomes,including for the management of massive multi-tissue defects or bone reconstruction performed in the field with limited resources.

dear Editor,Chronic pain is a significant concern after major lower limb amputations that often preclude prosthetic fitting,decrease ambulation,and impact the quality of life[1,2].In the last decade,targeted muscle reinnervation(TMR)has been proposed as a surgical strategy for treating or preventing symptomatic neuromas and phantomlimb phenomena in major amputees[1].This technique involves the transfer of an amputated mixed-motor and sensory nerve to a nearby recipient motor nerve[1,2].Unlike most surgical strategies that aim to hide or protect the neuroma,TMR gives the amputated nerves“somewhere to go and something to do”[2].In a randomized clinical trial on neuroma and phantom pain,Dumanian et al.[1]demonstrated that TMR reduces amputationrelated chronic pain at 1-year post-intervention when compared with the excision and muscle-burying technique,which remains the current gold *** et al.[2]also proposed applying TMR at the time of major limb amputation for preventing chronic pain and found that TMR patients experienced less residual limb pain(RlP)and phantom limb pain(PlP)when compared with untreated amputee controls.

Background:Soft tissue reconstruction is typically conducted after evacuation from theater of *** circumstances do not allow timely evacuation,however,defect site may need to be reconstructed in the combat *** presentation:A total of 41 patients with extremity soft tissue defect were treated using pedicled flaps by a single orthopedic surgeon during four deployments in Chad,Afghanistan and Mali between 2010 and *** mean age was 25.6 years.A total of 46 injury sites in extremities required flap coverage:19 combat-related injuries(CRIs)and 27 non-combat related injuries(NCRIs).Twenty of the injury sites were ***,63 pedicled flap transfers were carried out:15 muscle flaps,35 local fasciocutaneous flaps and 13 distant fasciocutaneous *** flap types used did not differ for CRIs or *** follow-up was 71 *** included deep infection(n=6),flap failure(n=1)and partial flap necrosis(n=1).limb salvage rate was 92.7%(38/41).Conclusions:Soft tissue defect can be managed with simple pedicled flaps in theatre of operations if *** reconstructive procedures should be part of the training for military orthopedic *** registration:Retrospectively registered in January 2019(2019-0901-001).

This paper aims to create visible light driven ternary photocatalysts using zinc oxide(ZnO),cerium(IV)oxide(CeO_(2)),and carbon xerogel(CX) as constituent *** use of CeO_(2) is based on the creation of direct-Z-scheme heterojunctions with the ZnO and the consequent diminishing of charge recombination,whereas the carbon xerogel inclusion is predicted to minimize bandgap energy,decrease electro n-hole reco mbination,and boost specific surface *** re,the choice of the black-wattle tannin as a carbonaceous precursor was targeted at the development of an environmentally friendly and affordable *** existence of the hexagonal phase of zinc oxide and cubic structure of the cerium(IV) oxide in the ternary material was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,with the latter also suggesting chemical bonding between the ZnO and the CX due to the creation of zinc oxycarbide *** inclusion of the carbon xerogel provokes a significant modification in the morphology of the ternary material,resulting in an increased surface area and smaller particle *** CX/ZnO-CeO_(2) ternary composite obtains the highest photocatalytic efficiency among all the materials studied,degrading 100% of 4-chlorophenol under simulated sunlight and 68% under visible radiation,after 5 *** increased photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between the semiconductors,higher visible light response,and higher specific surface area,as evidenced by the results obtained by active radical scavenging,chronoamperometry,diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,and N_(2) adsorption-desorption isotherms.

Spodoptera frugiperda,also known as fall armyworm(FAW),is an invasive crop pest that can feed on a variety of host plants,posing a serious threat to food *** are two sympatric strains of FAW that are morphologically identical but described with different food preferences:the“rice strain”(SfR)and the“corn strain”(SfC).A few genetic loci exist to identify these two *** and Z-chromosome-linked haplotypes are the most used,but the biggest part of the genome displays little polymorphism between strains that could explain their adaptation to different *** have previously observed consistent transcription differences between the strains in both laboratory and natural ***,we wonder if there are effects from host-strain-associated loci,maternally or paternally inherited,on FAW performance that could explain the divergence between the two FAW *** test this hypothesis,we first produced two F1 hybrid generations(SfR♀×SfC♂,SfC♀×SfR♂).These reciprocal hybrids should be heterozygous for all chromosomes except for the maternally inherited mitochondrial and sexual W *** evaluate whether plant preference is determined by these genetic loci,we cultivated the two hybrids and the two parental strains in triplicate on an artificial diet and recorded several phenotypic traits such as weight over time,survival rate,emerging rate,developmental time,and sex ***,the same performance experiment was carried out on corn ***,on the artificial diet,the two hybrid genotypes were both more performant than the two parental strains in terms of survival rate,pupal emerging rate,and developmental time,whereas they were intermediate to the inbred parental strains in pupal *** the corn plant diet,both hybrid genotypes outperformed the two parental strains in larval *** these asymmetrical results revealed that mitochondrial or sex-linked haplotypes alone cannot explain the performance differences

Mapping individual tree quality parameters from high-density liDAR point clouds is an important step towards improved forest *** present a novel machine learning-based workflow that uses individual tree point clouds from drone laser scanning to predict wood quality indicators in standing *** object reconstruction methods,our approach is based on simple metrics computed on vertical slices that summarize information on point distances,angles,and geometric attributes of the space between and around the *** models use these slice metrics as predictors and achieve high accuracy for predicting the diameter of the largest branch per log (DlBs) and stem diameter at different heights (DS) from survey-grade drone laser *** show that our models are also robust and accurate when tested on suboptimal versions of the data generated by reductions in the number of points or emulations of suboptimal single-tree segmentation *** approach provides a simple,clear,and scalable solution that can be adapted to different situations both for research and more operational mapping.

We provide an investigation of the spectroscopic factor of resonance states in A=5-8 nuclei,utilizing the Gamow shell model(GSM).Within the GSM,the configuration mixing is taken into account exactly with the shell model framework,and the continuum coupling is addressed via the complex-energy Berggren ensemble,which treats bound,resonance,and non-resonant continuum single-particle states on an equal *** a result,both the configuration mixing and continuum coupling are meticulously considered in the *** first calculate the low-lying states of helium isotopes and isotones with the GSM,and the results are compared with that of ab initio no-core shell model(NCSM)*** results indicate that GSM can reproduce the low-lying resonance states more accurately than the *** this,we delve into the spectroscopic factors of the resonance states as computed through both GSM and NCSM,concurrently conducting systematic calculations of overlap functions pertinent to these resonance ***,the calculated overlap function and spectroscopic factor of6He(01+)■νp3/2→^(7)He(3/2_(1)-)with GSM are compared with the results from ab initio NCSM,variational Monte Carlo,and Green’s function Monte Carlo calculations,as well as available experimental *** results assert that wave function asymptotes can only be reproduced in GSM,where resonance and continuum coupling are precisely addressed.

We read with great interest the paper from Jena(Germany)recently published in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition by deeb et al.,which caught our attention,given its clinical *** fact,post-hepatectomy liver failure(PHlF)remains nowadays a significant clinical challenge,occasionally leading to death or potentially requiring,in highly selected cases,rescue liver transplantation(1).Within quaternary care centers,the incidence of PHlF fluctuates from 5%to 20%,depending on the criteria employed,the underlying liver parenchyma quality and the type of hepatectomy(2).Hence,liver regeneration(lR)holds paramount importance in hepatic surgery as it directly impacts post-operative outcomes(3):it is a strictly orchestrated phenomenon that entails the activation of hepatocytes and hepatic progenitor cells,as well as the regulation of cell-cycle genes and growth *** contributing to PHlF include pre-operative,intra-operative and post-operative elements,leading to careful patient selection(4).

Female cichlid fish living in African great lakes are known to have sensory systems that are adapted to ambient light *** sen-sory system adaptations are hypothesized to have influenced the evolution of the diverse male nuptial *** rock-dwelling lake Malawi mbuna cichlids,however,the extent to which ambient light environments influence female sensory systems and potentially associated male nuptial coloration remains ***,the ubiquitous blue flank coloration and UV reflection of male mbuna cichlids suggest the potential impacts of the blue-shifted ambient light environment on these cichlid's visual perception and male nuptial coloration in the shallow water depth in lake *** the present study,we explored whether and how the sensory bias of females influences intersexual communication in the mbuna cichlid,Metriaclima zebra.A series of choice experiments in various light environments showed that *** females (1)have a pref-erence for the blue-shifted light environment,(2)prefer to interact with males in blue-shifted light environments,(3)do not show a preference between dominant and subordinate males in full-spectrum,long-wavelength filtered,and short-wavelength filtered light environments,and (4)show a"reversed"preference for subordinate males in the UV-filtered light *** results suggest that the visual perception of *** females may be biased to the ambient light spectra in their natural habitat by local adaptation and that this sensory bias may influence the evolution of blueand UV reflectivepatterns in male nuptial coloration.
