Assimilation of carbonate country rock by the parent magma of the Panzhihua Fe-Ti-V deposit(SW china):Evidence from stable isotopes

The Panzhihua intrusion in southwest china is part of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province and host of a large Fe-Ti-V ore *** emplacement of the main intrusion,multiple generations of mafic dykes invaded carbonate wall rocks,producing a large contact *** measured the oxygen-isotope composition of the intrusions,their constituent minerals,and samples of the country *** and plagioclase from Panzhihua intrusion haveδ18O values that are consistent with magmatic equilibrium, and formed from magmas withδ18O values that were 1-2‰higher than expected in a mantle-derived *** unmetamorphosed country rock has highδ18O values,ranging from 13.2‰（sandstone） to 24.6-28.6‰（dolomite）.The skarns and marbles from the aureole have lowerδ18O andδ13c values than their protolith suggesting interaction with fluids that were in exchange equilibrium with the adjacent mafic magmas and especially the numerous mafic dykes that intruded the *** would explain the alteration ofδ18O of the dykes which have significantly higher values than expected for a mantle-derived *** on the exactδ18O values assumed for the magma and contaminant, the amount of assimilation required to produce the elevatedδ18O value of the Panzhihua intrusion was between 8 and 13.7 wt.%,assuming simple *** exact mechanism of contamination is unclear but may involve a combination of assimilation of bulk country rock,mixing with a melt of the country rock and exchange with cO2-rich fluid derived from decarbonation of the marls and *** mechanisms,particularly the latter,were probably involved in the formation of the Fe-Ti-V ores.

carbon storage and net primary productivity in canadian boreal mixedwood stands

canadian boreal mixedwood forests are extensive,with large potential for carbon sequestration and storage;thus,knowledge of their carbon stocks at different stand ages is needed to adapt forest management practices to help meet climate-change mitigation *** stocks were quantified at three Ontario boreal mixedwood sites.A harvested stand,a juvenile stand replanted with spruce seedlings and a mature stand had total carbon stocks(±SE)of 133±13 at age 2,130±13 at age 25,and 207±15 Mg c ha^-1 at age 81 *** the clear-cut site,stocks were reduced by about 40%or 90 Mg c ha^-1 at *** held 27,34 and 62%of stocks,while detritus held 34,29 and 13%of stocks at age 2,25 and 81,*** soil carbon stocks averaged 51 Mg c ha^-1,and held 38,37 and 25%of *** net primary productivity(±SE)in the harvested and juvenile stand was 2.1±0.2 and 3.7±0.3 Mg c ha^-1 per annum(p.a.),compared to 2.6±2.5 Mg c ha^-1 *** the mature *** mature canopies studied had typical boreal mixedwood composition and mean carbon densities of 208 Mg c ha^-1,which is above average for managed canadian boreal forest ecosystems.A comparison of published results from canadian boreal forest ecosystems showed that carbon stocks in mixedwood stands are typically higher than coniferous stands at all ages,which was also true for stocks in vegetation and ***,aboveground net primary productivity was typically found to be higher in mixedwood than in coniferous boreal forest stands over a range of *** from this study,together with those published from the other boreal forest stands demonstrate the potential for enhanced carbon sequestration through modified forest management practices to take advantage of canadian boreal mixedwood stand characteristics.

Prone Position: Does It Help with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (EcMO)?

Introduction: Lung protective ventilation therapy with low tidal volume-high PEEP is the standard treatment for the patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Oscillators are occasionally used for salvage ventilation in cases where poor compliance restricts the use of traditional ventilation with ARDS. In addition to ventilator therapy, prone positioning has been used to improve oxygenation. We presented a challenging case of ARDS, which failed medical management extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (EcMO) support and oscillatory ventilation. Prone positioning was initiated which improved oxygenation, respiratory compliance and posterior atelectasis. case presentation: A 41-year-old morbid obese female developed ARDS due to influenza pneumonia. The patient remained hypoxic despite optimum medical and ventilator management and required veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV EcMO). cT scan of the chest showed ARDS with posterior consolidation. Despite ARDSnet ventilation support, antiviral therapy and EcMO support, there was no clinical improvement. High frequency oscillatory ventilation was initiated on EcMO day #13, which resulted in no respiratory improvement over the next 5 days. On EcMO day #18, the patient was placed on a Rotaprone? bed Therapy, utilizing a proning strategy of 16 hours a day. The clinical improvements observed were resolving of the consolidation on cXR, improvements in ventilatory parameters and decreased oxygen requirements. The patient was successfully weaned off EcMO on POD#25 (8 days post prone bed). conclusions: Prone position improved oxygen saturation and pulmonary compliance in severe ARDS requiring EcMO and it might facilitate early weaning.

The Global Weather Research and Forecasting (GWRF) Model: Model Evaluation, Sensitivity Study, and Future Year Simulation

Global WRF (GWRF) is an extension of the mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model that was developed for global weather research and forecasting applications. GWRF is being expanded to simulate atmospheric chemistry and its interactions with meteorology on a global scale. In this work, the ability of GWRF to reproduce major boundary layer meteorological variables that affect the fate and transport of air pollutants is assessed using observations from surface networks and satellites. The model evaluation shows an overall good performance in simulating global shortwave and longwave radiation, temperature, and specific humidity, despite large biases at high latitudes and over-Arctic and Antarctic areas. Larger biases exist in wind speed and precipitation predictions. These results are generally consistent with the performance of most current general circulation models where accuracies are often limited by a coarse grid resolution and inadequacies in sub-filter-scale parameterizations and errors in the specification of external forcings. The sensitivity simulations show that a coarse grid resolution leads to worse predictions of surface temperature and precipitation. The combinations of schemes that include the Dudhia shortwave radiation scheme or the Purdue Lin microphysics module, or the Grell-Devenyi cumulus parameterization lead to a worse performance for predictions of downward shortwave radiation flux, temperature, and specific humidity, as compared with those with respective alternative schemes. The physical option with the Purdue Lin microphysics module leads to a worse performance for precipitation predictions. The projected climate in 2050 indicates a warmer and drier climate, which may have important impacts on the fate and lifetime of air pollutants.

The Effects of Externally Paced Exercise on Executive Function and Stress in college-Aged Students

Purpose The purpose of the study was to investigate the acute effect of a beginner martial art class and aerobic exercise on executive function(EF)in college-aged young *** is overwhelming evidence that demonstrates acute as well as long-term aerobic exercise improves ***,there is limited research comparing externally paced exercise(EPE)to self-paced exercise(SPE)such as walking on improving *** requires greater cortical demand than SPE to execute a motor *** Eight men and eight women,aged 24.2±2.8 years,participated in a Repeated Measures crossover ***-and post-testing of EF with the Stroop and Tower of London(ToL)and stress level were measured after each of the two 1-h conditions:the SPE consisted of a walk(aerobic exercise)and the EPE was a beginner martial art *** There were significant main effects for the martial art class for the Stroop’s mean reaction time for congruent trials(P=0.01)with a large-effect *** mean reaction time for incongruent trials was significant(P=0.05)with a medium-effect *** ToL’s mean solution time(P=0.003)and mean execution time(P=0.002)were also significant with large-effect *** levels were not significantly improved following either *** The martial art class significantly improved all the major domains of EF,while aerobic exercise of a similar intensity did not demonstrate any measured significant *** physiological benefits of physical exercise are well documented;however,the cognitive enhancing capability of EPE should also be appreciated given the results of this study.

Open wound management of esophagocutaneous fistula in unstable cervical spine after corpectomy and multilevel laminectomy:A case report and review of the literature

A 67-year-old female patient developed an esophagocutaneous fistula 4 mo after c4 and c5 partial corpectomy. Plain radiograph and computed tomography(cT) scan of cervical spine showed inferior screws pullout with plate migration that caused the esophageal perforation. Management included removal of anterior hardware, revision c4-5 corpectomy, iliac crest strut autograft and halo orthosis immobilization. The fistula was treated using antibiotics and a 10-french gauge rubber tube for daily irrigation and Penrose drain. At 3 mo, the esophagocutaneous fistula healed and the patient resumed oral feeding. Six months follow-up cT scan showed sound fusion with graft incorporation. At two-year follow-up, patient denied any neck pain or dysphagia. This case report presents a successful outcome of a conservative open wound management without attempted repair. The importance of this case report is to highlight this treatment method that may be considered in such a rare complication particularly if surgical repair failed.

Several long-term studies have provided strong support demonstrating that growing crops under elevated[cO_(2)]can increase photosynthesis and result in an increase in yield,flavour and nutritional content(including but not limited to Vitamins c,E and pro-vitamin A).In the case of tomato,increases in yield by as much as 80%are observed when plants are cultivated at 1000 ppm[cO_(2)],which is consistent with current commercial greenhouse productionmethods in the tomato fruit *** results provide a clear demonstration of the potential for elevating[cO_(2)]for improving yield and quality in greenhouse *** major focus of this review is to bring together 50 years of observations evaluating the impact of elevated[cO_(2)]on fruit yield and fruit nutritional *** the final section,we consider the need to engineer improvements to photosynthesis and nitrogen assimilation to allow plants to take greater advantage of elevated cO_(2) growth conditions.

Investigation of the Permanent Deformation characteristics of Overlaid Pavement Incorporating Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayers

This study was carried out to evaluate the resistance of overlaid pavement incorporating stress absorbing membrane interlayers to permanent deformation. In this study, the permanent deformation of the interlayer mixtures was determined using the RLAT （repeated load axial text） carried out in the Nottingham Asphalt Tester. Also, a test pavement was constructed in the laboratory to assess the resistance to permanent deformation of overlaid pavement incorporating SAMIs （stress absorbing membrane interlayers）. The test pavement was divided into two along the centre line. Each of the divisions has three sections--two having SAMIs and one without SAMIs. The pavement was instrumented and trafficked. Trafficking was stopped when the pavement was deemed to have failed. The results showed that the measured permanent deformation values of the control sections were less than the sections having SAMIs. The increased permanent deformation values indicate that the introduction of SAMIs causes more vertical/horizontal deformation of the pavement. It was also found that the permanent deformation values varied depending on the composition and thickness of the SAMIs.
