The secosteroid hormone vitamin D has, in addition to its effects in bone metabolism also functions in the modulation of immune responses against infectious agents and in inhibiting tumorigenesis. Thus, deficiency of vitamin D is associated with several malignancies, but also with a plethora of infectious diseases. Among other communicable diseases, vitamin D deficiency is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases caused by hepatitis B and C viruses(HBV, HCV) and high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency with serum levels below 20 mg/mL in patients with HBV and HCV infection are found worldwide. Several studies have assessed the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the sustained virological response(SVR) to interferon(IFN) plus ribavirin(RBV) therapy in HBV and HCV infection. In these studies, inconsistent results were reported. This review addresses general aspects of vitamin D deficiency and, in particular, the significance of vitamin D hypovitaminosis in the outcome of HBVand HCV-related chronic liver diseases. Furthermore,current literature was reviewed in order to understand the effects of vitamin D supplementation in combination with IFN-based therapy on the virological response in HBV and HCV infected patients.

Genetic variants of interferon regulatory factor 5 associated with chronic hepatitis B infection

AIM To investigate possible effects of IRF5 polymorphisms in the 3' UTR region of the IFR5 locus on susceptibilityto hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection and progression of liver diseases among clinically classified Vietnamese *** Four IFR5 SNPs(rs13242262 A/T, rs77416878 C/T, rs10488630 A/G, and rs2280714 T/C) were genotyped in clinically classified HBV patients [chronic hepatitis B(CHB). n = 99; liver cirrhosis(LC), n = 131; hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), n = 149] and in 242 healthy controls by direct sequencing and Taq Man realtime PCR assays. RESULTS Comparing patients and controls, no significant association was observed for the four IFR5 variants. However, the alleles rs13242262 T and rs10488630 G contributed to an increased risk of liver cirrhosis(LC vs CHB: OR = 1.5, 95%CI: 1.1-2.3, adjusted P = 0.04; LC vs CHB: OR = 1.7, 95%CI: 1.1-2.6, adjusted P = 0.019). Haplotype IRF5*TCGT constructed from 4 SNPs was observed frequently in LC compared to CHB patients(OR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.2-3.3, adjusted P = 0.008). Haplotype IRF5*TCAT occurred rather among CHB patients than in the other HBV patient groups(LC vs CHB: OR = 0.4, 95%CI: 0.2-0.8, adjusted P = 0.03; HCC vs CHB: OR = 0.3, 95%CI: 0.15-0.7, adjusted P = 0.003). The IRF5*TCAT haplotype was also associated with increased levels of ALT, AST and bilirubin. CONCLUSION Our study shows that IFR5 variants may contribute as a host factor in determining the pathogenesis in chronic HBV infections.

Rainfall data with an appropriate spatial resolution is a key input to hydrological ***,networks of rain gauges are often sparsely and unevenly distributed in large catchments,especially in developing ***-resolution rainfall datasets,such as the Asian Precipitation Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources(APHRODITE),the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis(CFSR),the Climatic Research Unit Time Series(CRUTS),the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre(GPCC)and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM),have become available to overcome such *** objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of four land-based rainfall products(APHRODITE,CFSR,CRU-TS,and GPCC)and a satellite-based rainfall product(TRMM)on streamflow of the upper catchment of Tri An reservoir in Vietnam using the Hydrological Modeling System(HEC-HMS).In addition,the available rain gauges data were used for comparison *** indicates that the TRMM and GPCC data show their best match to rain gauges data in simulating the streamflow in the period 1999–***,the results indicate that the TRMM and GPCC data could be alternative solutions.

In this study,the spatiotemporal variability of trends in extreme precipitation events in Ho Chi Minh City during the period 1980–2017 was analyzed based on several core extreme precipitation indices(Rx1 day,Rx5 day,CDD,CWD,R20 mm,R25 mm,R95 p,and SDII).The nonparametric Mann–Kendall and Sen’s slope methods were used to compute the statistical strength,stability,and magnitude of trends in annual rainfall,as well as the extreme precipitation *** found that 64%of the stations had statistically significant upward trends in yearly rainfall,with high magnitudes frequently observed in the northern and southern regions of the *** the extreme precipitation indices,only SDII and R25 mm showed dominantly significant ***,there were increasing trends in the frequency and duration at the southern and central regions of the city during the study ***,El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation positively correlated with the duration and negatively correlated with the intensity and frequency of extreme ***,water management plans should be adjusted appropriately to reduce the severe impacts of precipitation extremes on communities and ecosystems.

Urban areas are of paramount significance to both the individuals and communities at local and regional ***,the rapid growth of urban areas exerts effects on climate,biodiversity,hydrology,and natural ecosystems ***,regular and up-to-date information related to urban extent is necessary to monitor the impacts of urban areas at local,regional,and potentially global *** study presents a new urban map of Eurasia at 500 m resolution using multi-source geospatial data,including Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)data of 2013,population density of 2012,the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System(DMSP-OLS)nighttime lights of 2012,and constructed Impervious Surface Area(ISA)data of *** Eurasian urban map was created using the threshold method for these data,combined with references of fine resolution Landsat and Google Earth *** resultant map was compared with nine global urban maps and was validated using random sampling *** of the accuracy assessment showed high overall accuracy of the new urban map of 94%.This urban map is one product of the 20 land cover classes of the next version of Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations.

Acetabular Defects of Hip Tuberculosis: Recommended Classification and Reconstruction in Hip Arthroplasty

Background: This study aimed to propose a classification of acetabular defects in advanced-stage hip tuberculosis based on preoperative radiographs and intraoperative evaluation, thereby providing options for reconstructing each type of defect in hip arthroplasty. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective study with 45 patients with active hip tuberculosis at stage IV who were treated with a total hip replacement strategy. We collected the patients’ acetabular defect data from preoperative radiographs and intraoperative observations. The defects were classified into types based on defect severity and reconstructive complexity. The hip replacement outcomes were evaluated at least 12 months after the operation. Results: The classification system includes three types: type I: localized or extensive defects inside the acetabulum, not affecting the acetabular rim, medial wall, or columns. Type II: extensive defects inside the acetabulum, affecting the acetabular rim or (and) medial wall. Type III: extensive defects inside the acetabulum, causing the medial wall and the acetabular column to lose function. Each type has a corresponding reconstruction. The outcome includes that 41/45 patients had excellent results;3/45 patients had good results. The patients had good results due to nerve and muscle damage caused by tuberculosis not related to the acetabular defects. Conclusion: This is a simple, practical classification system of acetabular defects in hip tuberculosis. The outcome of hip reconstruction using this classification was excellent without any cases of dislocation or protrusion.

Hip Tuberculosis at Stage IV: Outcomes and Some Conditions for Total Hip Replacement

Background: Treatment of hip disorders during active hip tuberculosis has long been a controversial issue. Some authors have reported performing hip replacement with different strategies with very good outcomes. This study aimed to describe the surgical outcomes and necessary conditions for total hip replacement in active hip tuberculosis. Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study. The study enrolled 40 patients with 42 active tuberculosis hips at stage IV treated by total hip replacement from October 2016 to December 2019 at the National Lung Hospital. We followed up with the patients for at least 12 months, evaluated surgical outcomes, and investigated the factors associated with these outcomes by logistic regression analysis. Results: Surgical outcomes showed that 37 patients (88.1%) had excellent hip function, no abscesses, and no sinus tract formation. Four cases (9.5%) had sinus tract formations. One case (2.4%) had good hip function. Binary logistic regression models revealed that sinus tract formation was associated with preoperative tuberculosis infection syndrome. The average time to obtain antituberculosis drug treatment preoperatively was 4.6 weeks. Conclusion: Total hip replacement for active hip tuberculosis is a practical and promising treatment method. Surgeons should consider improving patients’ conditions before performing total hip replacement, administering antitubercular drugs, and arthrotomy to eliminate all abscesses, and decrease the risk of tuberculosis infection syndrome and the inflammatory response.

Effectiveness of Sentinel-1-2 Multi-Temporal Composite Images for Land-Cover Monitoring in the Indochinese Peninsula

The Indochinese Peninsula, which contains two thirds of the world’s tropical forests, however, is one of the world’s most threatened habitat with some of the highest rates of deforestation and land use changes. Availability of higher resolution satellite data collected by the likes of Landsat 8 and Sentinel-1-2 has brought new opportunities for precise land cover monitoring in recent years. However, utilizing a massive volume of high spatial and temporal resolution data for ecological applications is challenging. One approach is to employ composite images generated from the multi-temporal satellite data. The research was conducted in two study sites located in the Indochinese Peninsula, Laos-Thailand and Vietnam-Cambodia, vulnerable to deforestation and land use changes. We assessed the potential of recently available composite images, such as Biophysical Image Composite (BIC), Forest Cover Composite (FCC), Enhanced Forest Cover Composite (EFCC), and Water Cover Composite (WCC) for the classification and mapping of land cover types. Three machine learning classifiers, k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Random Forests (RF) were employed and the performance of composite images was evaluated quantitatively with the support of ground truth data. The overall accuracies (Kappa coefficient) obtained from the combination of composite images were 0.92 (0.89) and 0.90 (0.86) for Laos-Thailand, and Vietnam sites respectively. These results highlight effectiveness of the composite images for the classification and mapping of land cover types.

Estimation of Land Use Changes in Tan Rai Bauxite Mine by Multi-Variants Change Vector Analysis (MCVA) on Multi-Temporal Remote Sensing Data

The Tan Rai Bauxite Project, which exploits a large bauxite mine in Lam Dong province, Vietnam has been in operation since 2012. In addition to the economic efficiency of the project, bauxite mining and processing uses a large area arable land and affect the regional environment. Remote sensing technology is increasingly widely used in many purposes in monitoring the changes of environment and resources, including land use change with high accuracy, giving managers more information to monitor the exploitation and use process of land resource. This study used a Change Vector Analysis (CVA) method of analysis on various remote sensing data sources to monitor the process of land exploitation and restoration of the Tan Rai Bauxite project. High-resolution remote sensing images were used as diverse as SPOT-5, VNREDSat-1, Google Earth from 2013 to 2019 to demonstrate the ability of the MCVA method to combine many other types of remote sensing images together. The results of fluctuation analysis were validated by 200 random points in the study area, and the accuracy of result is more than 90%. The results of land use change statistics were also compared with the annual data of Tan Rai Bauxite Factory. From this study, it can be concluded that the MCVA analysis method can quickly detect land use change areas and can combine many different image sources with a high accuracy. In addition, it also provides statistics of mining areas and restored areas, thereby assisting managers in monitoring the operation of the mine.

Water level predictions in the river,lake and delta play an important role in flood *** year Mekong River delta of Vietnam is experiencing flood due to heavy monsoon rains and high *** subsidence may also aggravate flooding problems in this ***,accurate predictions of water levels in this region are very important to forewarn the people and authorities for taking timely adequate remedial measures to prevent losses of life and *** are so many methods available to predict the water levels based on historical data but nowadays Machine Learning(ML)methods are considered the best tool for accurate *** this study,we have used surface water level data of 18 water level measurement stations of the Mekong River delta from 2000 to 2018 to build novel time-series Bagging based hybrid ML models namely:Bagging(RF),Bagging(SOM)and Bagging(M5P)to predict historical water levels in the study *** of the Bagging-based hybrid models were compared with Reduced Error Pruning Trees(REPT),which is a benchmark ML *** data of 19 years period was divided into 70:30 ratio for the *** data of the period 1/2000 to 5/2013(which is about 70%of total data)was used for the training and for the period 5/2013 to 12/2018(which is about 30%of total data)was used for testing(validating)the *** of the models was evaluated using standard statistical measures:Coefficient of Determination(R2),Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)and Mean Absolute Error(MAE).Results show that the performance of all the developed models is good(R2>0.9)for the prediction of water levels in the study ***,the Bagging-based hybrid models are slightly better than another model such as ***,these Bagging-based hybrid time series models can be used for predicting water levels at Mekong data.
