Aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement involves the rearing and release of fish to achieve specific fisheries *** 1 million people fish for leisure in south-eastern Australian waters every year,and aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement is one of several government-led strategies aimed at improvement of fishing experience for *** release programs and an associated regulatory framework have been developed over the past decade,with the primary objective of enhancing recreational(leisure) fisheries for species spanning penaeid prawns,crabs,and *** has been a core component of these programs,which has both improved enhancement outcomes and greatly contributed to the broader management of target species and our appreciation of their ***,the study of recruitment patterns alongside development of aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement programs is an integral part of our *** contrast to larger-scale releases conducted elsewhere,release strategies principally involve small-scale releases targeted directly into niches primarily defined by recruitment limitation and habitat availability,which contributes to the economic feasibility of programs and achievement of measurable *** development and outcomes of established release programs are presented(with a focus on Mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus and Eastern King Prawn Penaeus plebejus),alongside the challenges that have hampered continued enhancement efforts under these programs(such as disease,genetics,contamination and broodstock management).We conclude by outlining programs currently under development and the approaches being *** includes the first integrated fisheries enhancement program in eastern Australia,where fish are being released in conjunction with artificial structures deployed specifically to enhance fishing opportunities.

BACKGROUNd Pre-clinical simulation-based training(SBT)in endoscopy has been shown to augment trainee performance in the short-term,but longer-term data are *** To assess the impact of a two-day gastroscopy induction course combining theory and SBT(Structured PRogramme of INduction and Training–SPRINT)on trainee outcomes over a 16-mo *** This prospective case-control study compared outcomes between novice SPRINT attendees and controls matched from a United Kingdom training *** outcomes comprised:(1)Unassisted d2 intubation rates;(2)Procedural discomfort scores;(3)Sedation practice;(4)Time to 200 procedures;and(5)Time to *** Total 15 cases and 24 controls were included,with mean procedure counts of 10 and 3(P=0.739)***-SPRINT,no significant differences between the groups were detected in long-term d2 intubation rates(P=0.332)or discomfort scores(P=0.090).However,the cases had a significantly higher rate of unsedated procedures than controls post-SPRINT(58%vs 44%,P=0.018),which was maintained over the subsequent 200 *** tended to perform procedures at a greater frequency than controls in the post-SPRINT period(median:16.2 vs 13.8 per mo,P=0.051),resulting in a significantly greater proportion of cases achieving gastroscopy certification by the end of follow up(75% vs 36%,P=0.017).CONCLUSION In this pilot study,attendees of the SPRINT cohort tended to perform more procedures and achieved gastroscopy certification earlier than *** data support the role for wider evaluation of pre-clinical induction involving SBT.

Integrated impedance sensing of liquid sample plug flow enables automated high throughput NMR spectroscopy

A novel approach for automated high throughput NMR spectroscopy with improved mass-sensitivity is accomplished by integrating microfluidic technologies and micro-NMR resonators.A flow system is utilized to transport a sample of interest from outside the NMR magnet through the NMR detector,circumventing the relatively vast dead volume in the supplying tube by loading a series of individual sample plugs separated by an immiscible *** dual-phase flow demands a real-time robust sensing system to track the sample position and velocities and synchronize the NMR *** this contribution,we describe an NMR probe head that possesses a microfluidic system featuring:(i)a micro saddle coil for NMR spectroscopy and(ii)a pair of interdigitated capacitive sensors flanking the NMR detector for continuous position and velocity monitoring of the plugs with respect to the NMR *** system was successfully tested for automating flow-based measurement in a 500 MHz NMR system,enabling high resolution spectroscopy and NMR sensitivity of 2.18 nmol s1/2 with the flow sensors in *** flow sensors featured sensitivity to an absolute difference of 0.2 in relative permittivity,enabling distinction between most common *** was demonstrated that a fully automated NMR measurement of nine individual 120μL samples could be done within 3.6 min or effectively 15.3 s per sample.

Effect of Biochar Type and Size on<i>in Vitro </i>Rumen Fermentation of Orchard Grass Hay

Biochar, a byproduct from the biofuels industry, may be a potential feed additive in ruminant diets due to possible improvements in microbial fermentation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the nutritive value, in vitro digestibility, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, and gas production of biochar inclusion to an orchard grass (dactylis glomerata) basal diet. The study was designed as a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with 3 different biochar sources and 2 biochar processed sizes as the main effects factors. Experimental treatments were biochar from 3 different tree types: 1) Chestnut Oak (Quercus prinus L.;CO), 2) Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera;YP), or 3) White Pine (Pinus strobus L.;WP), and processed at 2 different biochar particle sizes: a) 178 μm (Coarse). Biochar was added to the basal diet of orchard grass hay (872.35 g/kg of dM, 98.31 g/kg of CP, and 704.02 g/kg of aNdF, dM basis) at a rate of 81 g/kg dM. Biochar residual ash content was greater (P P P = 0.01) with lower aNdF content in both WP sizes compared with their respective biochar type and size. Gas production was not influenced (P = 0.23) by biochar tree type;however, gas production was increased (P = 0.05) by Fine particle size compared with Coarse biochar. The in vitro true digestibility (IVTd) of orchard grass hay was increased (P = 0.01) by the inclusion of Fine biochar particle size compared with Coarse particle size. Additionally, in vitro CP true digestibility (dCP) exhibited a type × size interaction (P = 0.01). Crude protein digestibility was lower for Fine particle-sized CO and WP biochar sources compared with Coarse particle-sized CO and WP (P ≤ 0.004). However, dCP was not different between Coarse and Fine particle-sized YP biochar (P = 0.70). Volatile fatty acids (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) were not altered by biochar type (P ≥ 0.66) or particle size (P ≥ 0.19).
