Human immunodeficiency virus （HIV） is a lenti-virus （a member of the retrovirus family） that causes acquired immunodeficieney syndrome （AIDS）, a critical condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunis- tic infections. Over the past few years HIV has been spreading rapidly in the popula- tion. Almost, everyday there are thousands of new human cases of HIV infection being recorded in the world and these occur in almost every country of the world. However, the spread of HIV is relatively faster in the developing countries as compared to developed countries because developing countries have limited resources. Worldwide, 70% of HIV infections in the adults have been transmitted through heterosexual contact and vertical transmission accounts for more than 90~ of global infection in infants and children. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear mathematical model to study the spread of HIV by considering transmission of disease by heterosexual contact and vertical transmission. A stage structured model is proposed and analyzed by considering the total population variable and dividing the whole population under consideration into three stages： chil- dren, adults and old. Also, in this paper it is assumed that the rates of recruitment are different in different groups of population. Equilibria of the model and their stability are also discussed. Using the stability theory of differential equations and computer simu- lation, it is shown that due to the increase in the awareness of the disease in the adult class the total infective population decreases in the region under consideration.

Rice production is highly influenced by the prevailing weather conditions, physico-chemical properties of the soil, the yielding potential of cultivars besides, several crop management practices and inputs. To understand the performance of the tiller production of various paddy cultivars under varying soil texture sites of the south-western Punjab, four rice cultivars viz., PR121 (V1), PAU201 (V2), PR128 (V3) and PR129 (V4) were grown at three different locations having soil texture from light to heavy. Sowing of nursery was completed between May 15, 2019 and May 23, 2019 however, seedlings were transplanted in the well prepared field during 05-20 June, 2019. Results of the present study clearly depicted the role of weather parameters on plant height, effective tillers, grain yield and spikelet sterility in the rice crop. High temperatures have detrimental effects on fertility of rice varieties, regardless the transplanting time. Among different rice cultivars, sterility was the lowest (17.8%) in PR121 and the highest 42.6% in PR129. Apart from the varietal differences, the lowest sterility 28.4% recorded in medium textured soil was lowered by 21.5% and 27.8% than light and high textured soils. Cultivar PR121 produced 3.9%, 7.7% and 15% higher grain yield than PR128, PAU201 and PR129, respectively. The response of anthesis period thermal stress on spikelet sterility should be considered to develop the temperature tolerant varieties for addressing the climate change issues.

Sixty-five random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers were used for the detection of polymorphism among recipient and donor parents and their isogenic lines linked to leaf rust resistance genes, Lr9 and the resistant gene in kharchia local mutant KLM4-3B. Three primers showed polymorphism among recurrent parent, donor parent and isogenic lines.

The present investigation was undertaken to find molecular markers linked to leaf rust resistance genes, Lr9 and Kharchia local mutant KLM4-3B. Preliminary AFLP analysis was carried out with different stocks, a survey of primer combinations with different selective nucleotide indicated that for each primer combination, the number of scorable loci ranged from 34 to 123. Only a limited primer combination used in the set of parental and near isogenic lines showed a high level of polymorphism for AFLP marker. Putative AFLP marker were found to be linked to Lr9, Lr19 and KLM4-3B. The alien genes were readily identified.

To confirm allelic relationship between Lr9 and the leaf rust resistance gene in KLM4-3B, genetics of resistance was studied using crosses (WL711 + Lr9) × WL711 and (WL711 + LrKLM4-3B) × WL711. The F2 populations in cross (WL711 + Lr9) × WL711 and (WL711 + LrKLM4-3B) × WL711 segregated in ratio of 3:1 for disease reaction at seedling stage against pathotype 77-5 of leaf rust. This suggests that rust resistance in these stocks are under the control of single dominant genes. Further, to study allelic relationship betweenLr 9 and LrKLM4-3B, F2 population of the cross (WL711 + LrKLM4-3B) × (WL711 + Lr9) was studied. A segregation ratio of 15:1 implies that the two genes Lr9 and LrKLM4-3B are non-allelic genes.
