A detailed literature survey of the existing models for vertical velocity profiles of open channel flow for both clear water and sediment-laden water is performed. It is found that flow resistance and suspended sediment particles affect velocity profiles significantly. The Karman constant K of the logarithmic law is equal to 0.41 near the channel bed but far from the bed the value will change due to flow resistance and sediment suspension. The exponent of the power law velocity profile is also affected by those two factors. A general logarithmic law and a general power law for the description of velocity profiles arc proposed herein and verified by the experiment data presented by several investigators. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Reducing steel slag （RSS） was mainly acquired from five electric-arc furnace （EAF） steelmaking plants （among them, the products of two plants were carbon steel and those of other plants were stainless steel） for research tests. The chemical properties, compound compositions, activities and contents of main expansive compounds were tested. The results showed that the field sampled RSS had a very high crystallinity and hydraulicity with main chemical compositions close to those of Portland cement. It can be known from the study that in case of C/S ratio higher than 2.0, the main compound compositions are C2S, C3S, C2F and f-CaO. However, after the RSS was stored for six months, an obvious variation occurred with potential pre-hydration in RSS, where the SO3 content was slightly reduced and the compressive activity index was obviously higher than that at the 28th day.

Base on the Lagrangian description and finite differencing of the time step, the generation, propagation and deformation of solitary waves are simulated numerically by means of boundary element method. An algorithm to generate waves with any prescribed form is also implanted in the scheme, but in this research, solitary waves are studied. The numerical model is first verified by studying the case of a solitary wave impinging against a vertical wall. Time histories of evolution of a soliton running up on a sloping beach, as well as over a submerged obstacle are then presented. Applications to scattering problems due to solitary waves progressing over a slope onto a shelf are also shown.

The compressive and tensile strain rate sensitivities of polycrystalline and single crystal NiAl have been evaluated at 877 ℃ which is well above DBTT. Samples were prepared to specific sizes by hot press consolidation of appropriate powder sizes and minimizing past consolidation thermal exposures. NiAl single crystals were grown in the [100]orientation using a modified Bridgeman technique. The yield and tensile strength of polycrystalline NiAl as a function of grain size generally follows a Hall-Petch type relationship . A tensile strain rate effect was found at strain rate of 1 to 10-4 sec-1. The strain rate sensitivity coefficient, m,in the equation of σ = Kε is in the range of 0. 10 to 0. 13. The highest strain rate (1 sec-1) resulted in significantly higher strengths and little or no observed ductility. Compressive strain rate testing al strain rate of 10-5to 10-2 sec-1 and at temperature of 1050°to 1250°K was conducted both for polycrystalline and for single crystal NiAl. The calculated stress exponents and the activation energy for creep were compared with the reference data.

Measured concentrations of dissolved oxygen,phosphate,silicate,total alkalinity and calculated totalCO2 in a section between 121°E and 125°E across the Kuroshio near 22°N off taiwan and thegeostrophic velocity were used to estimate the gross transport of oxygen,nutrients and carbonates. The flux of dissolved oxygen is 6.7×106 mol/s northward and 0.9×106 mol/s *** netflux equals 5.8×106 mol/s *** northward flux of phosphate is 22.6×103 mol/s;the south-ward flux is 1.4×103 mol/*** net phosphate flux is 21.2×103 mol/s *** flux of silicateis 967×103 northward and 59×103 mol/s southward;the net transport is 908×103 mol/s *** flux of alkalinity is 75.5×106 mol/s northward,and 10.8×106 mol/s southward,the net flux is64.7×106 mol/s *** total CO2 the transport is 73.4×106 mol/s northward and 10.8×106 mol/ssouthward,or a net transport of 62.6×106 mol/s northward.

Understanding the Nature of Predatory Pricing in Large-Scale Market Economy with Genetic Algorithms

In this paper the nature of predatory pricing is analyzed with genetic algorithms. It is found that, even under the same payoff structure, the results of the coevolution of weak monopolists and entrants are sensitive to the representationof the decisionmaking process. Two representations are studied in this paper. One is the actionbased representation and the other the strategybased representation. The former is to represent a naive mind and the latter is to capture a sophisticated mind. For the actionbased representation, the convergence results are easily obtained and predatory pricing is only temporary in all simulations. However, for the strategybased representation, predatory pricing is not a rare phenomenon and its appearance is cyclical but not regular. Therefore, the snowball effect of a little craziness observed in the experimental game theory wins its support from this representation. Furthermore, the nature of predatory pricing has something to do with the evolution of the sophisticated rather than the naive minds.

AIM: To identify the clinical outcomes of hepato-cellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with inconsistent α-fetoprotein (AFP) levels which were initially high and then low at ***: We retrospectively included 178 patients who underwent liver resection with high preoperative AFP levels (≥ 200 ng/dL). Sixty-nine HCC patients had recurrence during follow-up and were grouped by their AFP levels at recurrence: group Ⅰ, AFP ≤ 20 ng/dL (n = 16); group Ⅱ, AFP 20-200 ng/dL (n = 24); and group Ⅲ, AFP ≥ 200 ng/dL (n = 29). Their preoperative clinical characteristics, accumulated recurrence rate, and recurrence-to-death survival rate were compared. Three patients, one in each group, underwentliver resection twice for primary and recurrent HCC. AFP immunohistochemistry of primary and recurrent HCC specimens were ***: In this study, 23% of patients demon-strated normal AFP levels at HCC recurrence. The AFP levels in these patients were initially high. There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics between the three groups except for the mean recur-rence interval (21.8 ± 14.6, 12.3 ± 7.7, 8.3 ± 6.6 mo, respectively, P 5 cm, total bilirubin > 1.2 mg/dL, vessel invasion, Child classification B, group Ⅲ, and recurrence interval < 12 mo, were risk factors for survival rate. Cox regression analysis was performed and vessel invasion, group Ⅲ, and recurrence interval were independent risk factors. The recurrence inter-val was significant longer in group Ⅰ (P < 0.001). The recurrence-to-death survival rate was significantly bet-ter in group Ⅱ (P = 0.016). AFP staining was strong in the primary HCC specimens and was reduced at recur-rence in group Ⅰ ***: Patients in group Ⅰ with inconsistent AFP levels had a longer recurrence interval and worse recurrence-to-death survival rate than those in group Ⅱ.
