Using Yoga to Reduce Stress and Bullying Behaviors among Urban Youth

Background/Purpose: Obesity and secondary conditions continue to disproportionally affect the health of children living in urban areas. Studies show that a lack of resources and physical activity-unfriendly communities discourage 60 minutes of daily activity, including strengthening exercises, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Using Social Ecological theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the multi-level influences of a yoga-based intervention on urban, inner city youth. Method: Using a mixed-methods design, ninety-three 3 - 5th grade students at five urban elementary schools participated in a ten-week yoga intervention. Analysis/Results: RM-ANOVA results revealed a significant reduction in stress and bullying behaviors among participants, and multiple regression analyses revealed that program attendance, change in stress, and change in yoga enjoyment significantly predicted change in yoga participation outside PE, when controlling for gender and age F(5, 87) = 5.36, p R2 = 0.19, but did not have a significant impact on physical activity participation outside of school. Student interviews and non-participant observations revealed strong enjoyment of yoga which led students to report substantial increases in yoga-related activities outside of school. Students also revealed that experience in yoga improved focus, attention, and reduced stress. Conclusions: Through convergence of qualitative and quantitative methods, this study showed a positive relationship between the number of yoga sessions attended (dose), enjoyment of yoga, and participation in yoga outside PE with friends and family. Findings suggest that urban PE should include more individual, non-competitive activities such as yoga, which students find to be stress-relieving, fun, inexpensive and easy to perform at home.

High-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems across southwestern United States are expected to be vulnerable to climate change,including drought and fi re,with implications for various aspects of the water *** that end,much less is known about the dynamics of transpiration,an important component of the water cycle across this *** the individual-tree scale,transpiration is estimated by scaling mean sap fl ux density by the hydroactive sapwood area(SA).SA also remains a key factor in eff ectively scaling individual tree water-use to stand *** across large spatial scales is normally established by relating SA of a few trees to primary size measures,e.g.,diameter at breast height(DBH),tree height(H),or canopy diameter(CD).Considering the importance of SA in scaling transpiration,the primary objective of this study was therefore to establish six species-specifi c(aspen,maple,white fi r,ponderosa pine,Douglas fi r,Englemann spruce)allometric relationships between SA and three primary size measures(DBH,CD,or H)across two high-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems in New Mexico and *** on multiple statistical criteria(coeffi cient of determination,index of agreement,Nash–Sutcliff e effi-ciency)and ease of measurement in the forest,we identifi ed DBH as the primary independent variable for estimating SA across all *** on group regression analysis,we found allometric relationships to be signifi cantly(p<0.05)diff erent for the same species(ponderosa pine,Douglas-fi r)across diff erent ***,our allometric relationships provide a valuable database for estimating transpiration at diff erent spatial scales from sap fl ow data in some of our most vulnerable ecosystems.

Meta-Learning of Evolutionary Strategy for Stock Trading

Meta-learning algorithms learn about the learning process itself so it can speed up subsequent similar learning tasks with fewer data and iterations. If achieved, these benefits expand the flexibility of traditional machine learning to areas where there are small windows of time or data available. One such area is stock trading, where the relevance of data decreases as time passes, requiring fast results on fewer data points to respond to fast-changing market trends. We, to the best of our knowledge, are the first to apply meta-learning algorithms to an evolutionary strategy for stock trading to decrease learning time by using fewer iterations and to achieve higher trading profits with fewer data points. We found that our meta-learning approach to stock trading earns profits similar to a purely evolutionary algorithm. However, it only requires 50 iterations during test, versus thousands that are typically required without meta-learning, or 50% of the training data during test.

引言人类衰老及伴随的原因一直是哲学、医学及科学研究的焦点。近来已提出一些有关衰老机制的假说,予以验证后发现这些假说不够充分。目前“衰老的免疫学说”以多种研究结果为依据,已被人们普遍接受。此学说认为:随着年龄的增加,免疫功能逐渐下降,衰老及相应的病理变化随着发生。实验发现,年龄增加的特征变化如肌肉萎缩、感觉灵敏度的降低、皮肤皱缩、疾病的发生等等的确与免疫能力的缺失有关。许多研究表明:基本病理类型—感染、肿瘤。
