Group rearing leads to long-term changes in locomotor activity of <i>Drosophila</i>males

Previous social experience may affect subsequent behavior. It was shown by other authors that Drosophila melanogaster males kept individually are more aggressive and sexually active than males kept in a group. In the present study, we tested the locomotor activity of individual males and females previously reared either individually, or in a group. We found that keeping 20 young males for three days together led to a strong long-term (up to 5 days) reduction in their further locomotor activity as individuals. Rearing of young males in groups of other sizes (2, 5, 10, and 30) produced a smaller or no after-effect. At the same time, we have not found any difference in subsequent behavior of individual females previously kept either individually, or in a group. We suppose that in a group, flies learned to suppress their locomotor activity to prevent unpleasant contacts with other animals (operant learning). It seems that in males this learning is more efficient because of the higher level of aggression producing the stronger negative reinforcement.

The study aims at the influence of THz radiation on 129.0 GHz of atmospheric oxygen on arterial pressure (A/P) and pulse, hemodynamic parameters of orbital arteries during the irradiation of biological active points of application in healthy volunteers and in patients with involutional macular degeneration (IMD). A decrease of systolic and diastolic components of arterial pressure and pulse, and a normalization of systolic velocity of bloodstream (CvB) and of resistance index (RI) in orbital arteries in patients with IMD are noticed. The results of the research are: 1) the method of THz influence on 129.0 GHz on molecular spectrum of radiation and absorbation of atmospheric oxygen is safe and doesn’t cause any negative side effects on common state in healthy volunteers and in patients with IMD;2) single influence of THz waves on 129.0 GHz on molecular spectrum of radiation and absorbation of atmospheric oxygen is caused to statistical important improvement in vascular system of eyeball.

Abstract The kinetics of camphene production in liquid phase from α-pinene was experimentally determinedin an isothermal batch *** this end,a sulfated ZrO2catalyst was used and the reaction studied in thetemperature range of *** analyzing the experimental data,second reaction order for α-pinene wasfound.A kinetic model is presented which includes term for the catalyst load *** specific rate constant at393K was 2.19×10-3mol.L-1,min-1,the activation energy being *** vaues are within the rangeof literature results.

The aim of the investigations was to evaluate benefits of the directed transport system - a nanocomposite, based on cisplatin and magnetite combined with local action of constant magnetic field on the tumor, in experiments in vivo in animals with transplantable Guerin carcinoma. Animals were divided into 5 groups according to the type of agent. We showed that nanocomposite in combination with static magnetic field exercises more prominent anti-tumor activity than cisplatin alone. The antiphospholipid syndrome(APS) is an acquired thrombophilic disorder in which autoantibodies are produced to a variety of phospholipids determinants of cell membranes or phospholipid binding proteins. There are few reports about association between antiphospholipid antibodies and development of BuddChiari syndrome(BCS). We report the case of BCS development in young Russian male with primary APS. The patient underwent orthotopic liver transplantation on August 26, 2012. At present time his state is good, the blood flow in the liver restored and its function is not impaired. We report about the first time the successful use of dabigatran etexilate for prolonged anticoagulation therapy in APS patient with BCS. In addition patient is managed with immunosuppressive drugs.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the association of sociodemographic, biopsychosocial and lifestyle behaviors (diet, sedentarism and physical activity) with eating disorders (eD) in a national sample of Costa Rican children and adolescents. This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study. A total of 2667 students of elementary, middle and high school from sixty-four educative centers (40 schools and 24 high schools) of Costa Rica participated in the study. The predictive factors associated with eD are: body image dissatisfaction (β = 0.367;p β = 0.131;p β = 0.109;p 0.001), intentionally hurt or harm itself (β = 0.074;p β = 0.053;p β = 0.052;p β = 0.051;p β = -0.071;p β = -0.068;p = 0.010) and the age (β = -0.064;p = 0.001) are not related with the development of eD. Psychosocial factors (body image dissatisfaction and intentionally self-injure) had the greatest influence (near 27%) of the global variance of the regression model that explained the association with eD. Programs should be promoted to monitor children and adolescents with excess weight, as well as, the coexistence of erroneous weight and body image perceptions in these population. This could protect against the development of eD in children and adolescents. evidence-Based Medicine: Level v of evidence (descriptive study).

AIM:To investigate the effects of a low fermentable,oligosaccharides,disaccharides,monosaccharides and polyols diet(LFD)and the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG(LGG)in irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).MeTHODS:Randomised,unblinded controlled trial on the effect of 6-wk treatment with LFD,LGG or a normal Danish/Western diet(ND)in patients with IBS fulfilling Rome III diagnostic criteria,recruited betweenNovember 2009 and April *** were required to complete on a weekly basis the IBS severity score system(IBS-SSS)and IBS quality of life(IBS-QOL)questionnaires in a specially developed IBS web selfmonitoring *** investigated whether LFD or LGG could reduce IBS-SSS and improve QOL in IBS ***:One hundred twenty-three(median age 37years,range:18-74 years),90(73%)females were randomised:42 to LFD,41 to LGG and 40 to ND.A significant reduction in mean±SD of IBS-SSS from baseline to week 6 between LFD vs LGG vs ND was revealed:133±122 vs 68±107,133±122 vs 34±95,Pes of IBS-SSS for baseline covariates showed statistically significant reduction of IBS-SSS in LFD group compared to ND(IBS-SSS score75;95%CI:24-126,Ped to ND(IBS-SSS score 32;95%CI:18-80,P=0.20).IBS-QOL was not altered significantly in any of the three groups:mean±SD in LFD 8±18 vs LGG 7±17,LFD 8±18 vs ND 0.1±15,P=***:LFD is efficacious for patients with IBS.

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JMe) is one of the most common types of idiopathic generalised epilepsy. It starts in teenage years, yet it is frequently misdiagnosed or diagnosed very late, thereby resulting in inadequate therapy plan and worsening of symptoms. Timely diagnosis of JMe is crucial for the correct management of symptoms and prevention of disease development. In this case report we describe a case of a 33-year-old woman who did not receive appropriate care due to a late diagnosis of her JMe condition.
