Binary logistic regression models are commonly used to assess the association between outcomes and covariates. Many covariates are inherently continuous, and have a variety of distributions, including those that are heavily skewed to the left or right. Existing theoretical formulas, criteria, and simulation programs cannot accurately estimate the sample size and power of non-standard distributions. Therefore, we have developed a simulation program that uses Monte Carlo methods to estimate the exact power of a binary logistic regression model. This power calculation can be used for distributions of any shape and covariates of any type (continuous, ordinal, and nominal), and can account for nonlinear relationships between covariates and outcomes. For illustrative purposes, this simulation program is applied to real data obtained from a study on the influence of smoking on 90-day outcomes after acute atherothrombotic stroke. Our program is applicable to all effect sizes and makes it possible to apply various statistical methods, logistic regression and related simulations such as Bayesian inference with some modifications.

In order to compare sensitivity of EIA and RIA assay kits for hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV, respectively) infection markers, 100 serum samples in total were collected form 50 adult women each in urban and rural areas in northeast China. The number of positive cases to the three infection markers on HBV (i.e., HBsAg +, anti HBs +, and anti HBc +) and the one on HCV (anti HCV +) were examined in two laboratories, i.e., in Laboratory A with EIA kits produced in China and in Laboratory B with RIA kits. HCV infection positivity (anti HCV +) was examined by EIA kits in both laboratories, but from different sources in and outside of China, respectively. The assay in Laboratory A gave 2 HBsAg + cases out of the 100 cases examined, whereas there were 9 positive cases in Laboratory B. In contrast, 19 cases were positive to anti HCV when examined in Laboratory A, and there were 3 cases in Laboratory B. Thus, the kits used in Laboratory A gave fewer HBsAg + and more anti HCV + cases than the kits used in Laboratory B. The prevalence of anti HBs + or anti HBc + and cases did not differ when assayed in the two laboratories with EIA and RIA kits, respectively. The agreement of positive and negative findings between the two sets of testing were 93%, 93%, 93%, 86% and 82% for HBsAg, anti HBs, anti HBc, HBV (i.e., either positive to anyone of the three markers or negative to all three markers), and anti HCV, respectively. The implication of the observation on epidemiology on HBV and HCV infection prevalence was discussed.

Relationship between Self-Care and Hand Foot Syndrome Specific Quality of Life in Cancer Patients

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe adherence to self-care for hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and the relationship between self-care and health-related quality of life (QOL). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 105 consecutive outpatients with HFS. To assess self-care for HFS and QOL, the participants were asked to complete self-care and HFS-14 (hand-foot syndrome specific QOL) questionnaires, respectively. Multiple regression models were used to identify the relationship between self-care and QOL. Results: Adherence to self-care for HFS was low, less than 50% for most of the items. Multivariate analysis revealed that poorer self-care (βs = -0.19;P = 0.03), depressive symptoms (βs = 0.43;P βs = 0.20;P = 0.04) were independent predictors of poorer QOL scores. Conclusions: We have identified a need for further research to develop effective programs of self-care in HFS.

Mouse and vole embryos were allogeneically and xenogeneically transferred into pseudopregnant CD-1 and immunodeficient(scid) female mice,and we investigated the distribution of uterine leucocytes cells in the implantation sites on days 5,6,and 7 of *** were evenly distributed in the endometrium on days 5～*** were rarely seen on days 5～7,but lymphocytes were found throughout the endometrium,often in groups associated with glands or the luminal *** number of uNK cells increased markedly at the mesometrial triangle and the outer decidual area in the CD-1 uteri containing vole embryos;by contrast,scid uteri having vole embryos showed almost the same number as those having mouse *** cells were present in large numbers at the myometrium,but rarely in the decidua in all types of pregnant *** at the myometrium were more numerous in xenogeneic than in allogeneic *** mast cells appeared in the inner decidua where xenogeneically transferred vole embryos were dead and *** results suggest the possibility that uterine leucocytes mediate various immunological events in the mouse-vole interspesific pregnancies.

AIM: To investigate into the diversity of UGT1A1 polymorphism across three different districts in Japan and highlight genetic differences among the population in Japan. METHODS: We enrolled 50 healthy volunteers from each of the Yamaguchi (western part of Japan), Kochi(southern part of Japan) and Akita (northern part of Japan) prefectures. Blood samples (7 mL) were collected from each participant and stored in EDTA for subsequent genotyping by fragment size analysis, direct sequencing and TaqMan assay of UGT1A1*28, UGT1A7*3/UGT1A9*22 and UGT1A1*93/UGT1A1*6/ UGT1A1*27/UGT1A1*60/UGT1A7 (-57), respectively. RESULTS: The only statistically significant differences in allele polymorphisms among the group examined were for UGT1A1*6. The Akita population showed more UGT1A1*6 heterozygosity (P = 0.0496). CONCLUSION: Our study revealed no regional diversity among UGT1A1, UGT1A7 or UGT1A9 polymorphisms in Japan.

To investigate the link between low air temperature and ambulance transports in Japan. Data on climate parameters i.e. air temperature, humidity and daylight hours in Sakata area, Yamagata prefecture, Japan, which is northern part (Tohoku) in Japan, was obtained from Japan Meteorological Agency. Monthly data on ambulance transports due to acute disease from 2005 to 2011 was also directly obtained from Sakata area official website, Japan. The relations between air temperature and ambulance transports were evaluated by ecological study. Ambulance transports per day were 10.1 ± 1.0 and mean air temperature was 13.0 ± 8.4 (°C). Ambulance transports per day were weakly and negatively correlated with mean air temperature, mean of the highest air temperature, mean of the lowest air temperature, the highest air temperature and daylight hours. It was also weakly and positively correlated with mean humidity. However, the relation between ambulance transports and mean air temperature was well estimated by quadratic curve (r = 0.633,

Causal relationships between survival rates, dietary and lifestyle habits, socioeconomic status and physical, mental and social health in elderly urban dwellers in Japan: A chronological study

Life expectancy was well known to associate with lifestyle habits, socioeconomic condition, and three health-related dimensions (physical, mental and social health status). However, the causal effect relationship among these variables remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the causal relationships among health and life conditions, socioeconomic status, dietary and lifestyle habits and three health-related dimensions in elderly urban dwellers in Tokyo, Japan. Of 16,462 eligible elderly individuals aged 65 years and older, 13,195 participants responded to the questionnaire survey conducted in September 2001 (a response rate of 80.2%). A follow-up survey was conducted in September 2004 and a total of 8162 survivors were followed until the end of August 2007 through the municipal resident's registry. Exploratory factor analysis defined five latent variables based on the 13 observed variables. From a cross-lagged effects variation model using structural equation modeling, causal relationships were analyzed using longitudinal data obtained at the 2001 and 2004 survey and the number of survival days between 2004 and 2007. After estimating a best-fit model, we discovered that health and life conditions were not determined by current dietary and lifestyle habits, which many studies showed. However, the conditions were more directly affected by three health-related dimensions three years earlier, and indirectly affected by educational attainment and previous annual income as well. The current model suggests that it might be of great importance for elderly individuals to emphasize the maintenance of psychological well being, physical activity, social communication and participation, as well as income, rather than focusing on improvements in diet and health-related lifestyles per se.

BACKGROUND Malignant lymphoma is a rare form of gallbladder *** of these malignancies are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas;however,Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare,and only two previous reports are available in the ***,we report a rare case of Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder mimicking gallbladder *** SUMMARY An 83-year-old man with no abdominal complaints was found to have a gallbladder tumor and periportal lymph node enlargement on computed tomography(CT)performed for hypertension *** laboratory data revealed slightly elevated serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and soluble interleukin 2 *** examinations revealed two irregular and contrastenhanced masses extending into the gallbladder lumen,but these did not infiltrate the ***,a periportal lymph node had enlarged to 30 *** on these findings,we diagnosed the patient as having gallbladder adenocarcinoma with lymph node metastasis,which was treated using bile duct resection with gallbladder bed resection and periportal lymph node ***,the patient was finally diagnosed as having Burkitt’s *** the surgical margin was pathologically negative,recurrence was noted at the hepatic radical margin and superior pancreaticoduodenal lymph nodes on positron emission tomography/CT soon after ***,he was referred to a hematologist and started receiving treatment with reduced-dose cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine,and *** Burkitt’s lymphoma can occur in the *** can be useful in cases with findings suggestive of gallbladder malignant lymphoma.

构建了日本梨树（Pyruspyrifolia）花粉cDNA文库, 发现了一个编码花粉管分泌的类β-1,3-葡聚糖酶蛋白（BGN-1）的cDNA（bgn-1 ）并测定了其序列。bgn-1由1408 bp组成, 包括47 bp的5’-非翻译区, 由1194 bp组成并编码了397个氨基酸的ORF和167 bp的3'-非翻译区。3'-非翻译区含有1个NUE（AATTAA）和3个似FUE的基序, 分别位于1369～1374（AAT-TAA）、1320～1325、1327～1332（TTTTTA）和1363～1368（TTTGGA）。 bgn-1编码的蛋白（BGN-1）与DDBJ中的植物β-1,3-葡聚糖酶的序列相似性范围为37%59%, 与3D结构已知的大麦β-1, 3-葡聚糖酶（GⅡ）的序列相似性为39.7%。对GⅡ与BGN-1进行的疏水簇分析（HCA同源分为87.1%, >75%的一般标准）和使用3D-PSSM软件进行的分析暗示, BGN-1的3D结构与大麦GⅡ同源性最大（≧95%的肯定度）。BGN-1的信号肽长度为22 aa, 成熟的BGN-1（375 aa）的理论分子量为4 0723 D, 理论pI值为9.59, 诊断氨基酸残基模式（D, L, S, L）与禾谷类的与生长相关的亚家族D的诊断氨基酸残基模式（D, L, S, Q）极相似。在BGN-1的C-端延伸区的位点352～367之间发现了1个功能不清, 重复出现的ProXXPro结构。
