Effects of Diffuser Vane Geometry on Interaction Noise Generated from a Centrifugal Compressor

The characteristics of interaction tone noise radiated from a centrifugal compressor with a vaned diffuser are discussed by experiments, including visualization techniques using the oil-film method. Research attention is paid to the leading edge geometries of the diffuser vanes that are deeply related to the generation mechanism of the interaction tone noise. The compressor-radiated noise can be reduced by several decibels by setting some clearances in both the hub and shroud surfaces of the diffuser wall along with some decline in the pressure-rise coefficient. Since the decline turned out to be caused by the flow impingement and also by the secondary flow within the diffuser passages, several new types of diffuser vane geometries which do not detract from both the performance and noise level are developed and utilized for the experiments. The presented diffuser vane geometries will offer a few basic guidelines for the diffuser vane design.

With the purpose of investigating the origin of ferromagnetism(FM), Mn-doped Zn O thin films had been fabricated by radio frequency(rf) magnetron sputtering and subsequent anneal process. The characterization of the Mn-doped Zn O thin films was conducted by X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID). With increasing the anneal temperature from 300°C to 700°C for 3 min, the influence on magnetism of the Mndoped ZnO thin films is slight. While extending the anneal time from 3 to 50 min at 300°C, the influence on magnetism is obvious and the Mn-doped ZnO thin films with 30 min clearly demonstrate FM. Compared with the effect of oxygen vacancy and substitutional Mn2+on the ferromagnetic behavior, OVplays the main role in inducing FM of the Mn-doped ZnO thin films with good crystal structure.

Monosomic lines of Nicotiana tabacum are helpful to confirm the location of genes on specific chromosomes. In the cross N. nudicaulis and N. tabacum, hybrid seedlings express lethal symptoms, which are controlled by the S subgenome of N. tabacum. To identify the responsible chromosome, we needed to produce chromosome lacking lines (CLLs) of N. tabacum L. “Red Russian” and use them to cross with N. nudicaulis. From a cross of (N. tabacum × N. tomentosiformis) × N. tabacum, 380 BC1 individuals were obtained. Using a Haplo-Q line (a monosomic line lacking the single linkage group 11) and N. tabacum, we found that qPCR is a simple and reliable screening method for CLLs of N. tabacum. The marker PT30342 is located on linkage group 11, and the -Ct value (Ct Actin - Ct PT30342) was 2.0 for a disomic line and was 1.097 for a Haplo-Q line. By the use of flow cytometry, qPCR and chromosome counting together as a screening method, we identified 6 CLLs lacking 2 to 6 chromosomes. Compared with conventional methods, our method is a rapid technique for making and screening CLLs ofthe S or S/T subgenome of N. tabacum. Further, these CLLs will be useful to identify the location of two or more factors on chromosomes controlling a variety of genetic problems affecting breeding. Here, we only made CLLs of the S or S/T subgenome of N. tabacum. We will use the method established in this study to produce CLLs of the T subgenome of N. tabacum, and gather a full set of CLLs of N. tabacum. qPCR could also be applied to the identification of chromosome aberrations in other plants.

Background: About 70% of Japanese children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) live at home, and the number is increasing. Family members have an enormous burden of daily physical care for these children. A top priority is to understand quality of life (QoL), family function, and family empowerment to effectively support these families. We aimed to assess current living situations of families with a SMID child, and to reveal the relationships between QoL, family function, and family empowerment. Methods: Sixty-five family members from 34 families with a SMID child participated in this study. We assessed 5 parameters using the Japanese versions of the following instruments: World Health Organization Quality of Life 26 (WHOQOL26), Kinder Lebensqualitats Fragebogen (KINDL), Family Assessment Device (FAD), Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale KG-4 (FACESKG-4), and Family Empowerment Scale (FES). Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted;QoL score was the objective variable. Results: Participants included 54 parents (34 mothers, 20 fathers) and 11 siblings. The mean age of SMID children was 10.4 ± 5.03 years. Twenty-two children needed multiple types of medical care. The mean age of parents and siblings was 41.5 ± 6.16 years and 15.5 ± 2.35 years, respectively. The mean QoL score (3.28 ± 0.5) was similar to the Japanese average. The mean KINDL score (77.2 ± 12.1) was higher than those of previous studies. The mean FAD score was 1.97 ± 0.32. For FACEKG-4, the score of adaptability was correlated with WHOQOL score (r = 0.459, p < 0.05). The mean score of FES was 113.6 ± 14. As the result of multiple regression analysis, lower family FAD scores ([sb] = ?0.61, p < 0.01) indicated higher family function and greater age of participants (sb = 0.495, p < 0.01) was correlated with higher WHOQOL scores (F = 15.208, p < 0.01). A Retrospective Analysis of Three Non-Invasive Tests for Initial Diagnosis of Helicobacter pyloriInfection in Children

Proper diagnosis in the pediatric population is required to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and prevent gastric cancer. Our aim was to assess the performance of non-invasive tests to diagnose H. pylori infection in pediatric patients. A retrospective analysis was performed on 141 pediatric patients requiring endoscopic evaluation and diagnostic tests for H. pylori infection to define the cause of abdominal symptoms. Non-invasive tests included the 13C-urea breath test (UBT), a monoclonal stool antigen test using enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (mSAT), and a serum immunoglobulin G antibody test using antigens derived from Japanese individuals (S-Ab). This study investigated sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios for a positive and a negative test (LR+ and LR-), and accuracy of non-invasive tests, in comparison with invasive tests. Eighty two of 141 patients (58%) were recognized as H. pylori positive by invasive methods. When UBT, mSAT or S-Ab were analyzed, all were found to be effective over 94% accurate. Specificity ranged between 86.7% and 95.8%, and sensitivity ranged between 93.8% and 97.1%. When subjects were stratified into three distinct age groups, the best performance was achieved for 1-6 years old with mSAT at 100% for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. S-Ab yielded the best results for children 7-12 years old and the UBT test performed best for 13-18 years old. These results demonstrate the utility of UBT, mSAT, and S-Ab non-invasive tests in diagnosing H. pylori but suggest that certain tests may be optimal for children of distinct ages. Three non-invasive tests, UBT, mSAT and S-Ab showed sufficient sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for the initial diagnosis of H. pylori infection among pediatric patients. Non-invasive tests may contribute to achieving minimum invasive diagnosis with combining with a histological test and a culture test in children.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication rates achieved with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), amoxicillin and clarithromycin have recently decreased to about 75% because of the increase in clarithromycin resistance in Japan. In the present study, H. pylori resistance rates against clarithromycin, amoxicillin and metronidazole were investigated in pediatric patients and eradication rates were evaluated when tailored antibiotics regimens based on antibiotic sensitivity data were used. We isolated H. pylori endoscopically from 77 pediatric patients suffering from abdominal symptoms. The susceptibility tests of H. pylori strains to clarithromycin, amoxicillin and metronidazole were examined and eradication therapy was tailored using the appropriate antibiotics. Seventy-seven patients were treated with a mean age of 12.16 ± 3.34 years (range, 4.92-19.75) consisting of 40 males and 37 females. The average resistance rates between 1998 and 2016 to clarithromycin, amoxicillin and metronidazole were 54.5% (42 of 77), 6.5% (5 of 77) and 5.2% (4 of 77) respectively. The prevalence of clarithromycin resistance increased significantly over time to reach 88.9% by 2013-2016. Successful eradication rates using tailored antibiotic treatment was 93.8% (61 of 65). Clarithromycin-based eradication therapy rate reached 92.6% against clarithromycin-sensitive strains. Metronidazole-based initial eradication therapy also had a high successful rate (97.0%) to clarithromycin-resistant strains. Although high rates of clarithromycin resistant H. pylori reaching about 90% were observed in Japanese children, tailored eradication therapy using the appropriate antibiotic agents were highly successful. H. pylori sensitivity testing and eradication therapy with appropriate antibacterial agents may contribute to accomplishment of high initial eradication rates and consequently reducing the incidence of developing gastric cancer.
