Correlation between Residual Renal Function and Hypertension in Regular Haemodialysis Patients

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between residual renal function and hypertension in regular haemodialysis patients. Background: Initiating chronic dialysis treatment gives end-stage renal disease patients a new lease on life. However, the annual mortality rate in dialysis patients is ~20% and quality of life is substantially reduced. Patients and Methods: This study was carried out on a reasonable number of subjects on regular haemodialysis divided into two groups. All were given informed consent and, the study was approved by the ethics committee of Menoufia University. Results: There was significant relation between presence of residual renal function and hypertension in patients with ESRD on regular haemodialysis, but the relation between residual renal function and control of hypertension is not statistically significant. 40% of group 1 were hypertensive, 66.7% of group 2 patients were hypertensive, the interdialytic weight gain mean was 1.42 in group 1 and 2.37 in group 2. Control of hypertension was achieved in 63.6% of group 1 patients by one drug, 27.3% patients by 2 drugs;however 9.1% of patients need 3 drugs to control their blood pressure, while in group 2 40% of patients were controlled by one drug, 45% with 2 drugs and 15% need 3 drugs to control blood pressure. Conclusion: There is significant relation between presence of residual renal function and hypertension in patients with ESRD on regular haemodialysis, but the relation between residual renal function and control of hypertension is not statistically significant.

Prophylactic effect of vitamin E against hepatotoxicity,nephrotoxicity,haematological indices and histopathology induced by diazinon insecticide in mice

Considering that the involvement of reactive oxygen species （ROS） has been implicated in the toxicity of various pesticides, this study was designed to study the ameliorative effect of Vitamin E （100 mg/kg body weight） on mice （25 -30 mg） treated with diazinon （32.5 or 16.25 mg/kg body weight） organophosphate insecticide for 14 days. Subehronic DZN exposure and the protective effects of vitamins E （vitE） were evaluated for their effects on haematological indices, the enzymes concerning liver damage [plasma alanine aminotransferase （ ALT）, aspartate aminotaransferase （ AST）, alkaline phosphatise （ ALP）, and some parameters of kidney function （urea and creatinine） in mice. Additionally, the histopathological changes in liver and kidney tissue were examined. The high dose of diazinon （DZNH） decreased the body weight significantly at the end of experiment. Additionally, the liver and kidney were examines for histopathological changes. The high dose of diazinon decreased body weight significandy. Moreover, there was a statistically significant decrease in haemoglobin （Hb）, red blood cell （RBC） and hematocrit （Hct） in diazinon-treated mice compared to controls. This decrease was partially remedied in the diazinon-treated group that also received vitE. Damage in the liver and kidney tissues was also evident as elevated plasma ALT, AST, ALP, urea and creatinine. VitE partially counteracts the toxic effect of DZN and repairs tissue damage in the liver and kidney, especially when supplemented to 1/4 LD50 intoxicated animals. Histopathological changes in liver and kidney were observed only in 32.5 mg/kg DZN given group. These results suggest that the effects of DZN are dose dependent. No pathological findings were observed in vitE ＋ DZNtreated groups. According to the present study, we conclude that vitE ean reduce the detrimental impacts of diazinon on haematological indicies, as well as liver and kidney function [ Current Zoology 55 （3）： 219 - 226, 2009].

Spectrofluorimetric and Spectrophotometric Stability- Iwndicating Methods for the Analysis of Veralipride in Presence of Its Degradants and in Spiked Human Plasma

Spectrofluorimetric and spectrophotometric stability-indicating methods were developed and validated for analysis of veralipride （Ver） in presence of its hydrolytic and oxidative degradants. The spectrofluorimetric method was based on direct measurement of the intrinsic fluorescence of Ver at 366 nm after excitation at 299 nm using sodium lauryl sulfate （SLS） as micelle enhancer. The fluorescence intensity plot was linear over the concentration range 1.0-10.0 ***-1. The high sensitivity of the method allowed its successful application to the analysis of Ver in spiked human plasma. Two other methods were developed. They are based on the oxidative coupling reac- tion of Vet with 3-methyl benzothiazolin-2-one hydrazone （MBTH） hydrochloride in presence of ceric ammonium sulphate in an acidic medium. The first method depends on spectrophotometric measurement of the stable green colored oxidative coupling product at 660 nm. The different experimental parameters affecting the reaction were optimized. Linearity range is 10.0--100.0 ~tgomL-1. The second method depends on a fluorescence quenching effect of Vet on the fluorescence of Ce3＋. The difference in fluorescence intensity was measured at 380 nm after excitation at 300 nm. This method is applicable over the concentration ranges 0.25-2.50 pg-mL-1. The methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines. They were successfully applied for the analysis of Ver in drug substance, drug product and in laboratory prepared mixtures containing different percentages of hydrolytic and oxidative degradants.

Analytical exponential model for stochastic point kinetics equations via eigenvalues and eigenvectors

The stochastic point kinetics equations with a multi-group of delayed neutrons, which are the system of a couple of stiff stochastic differential equations, are *** analytical exponential model is used to solve the stochastic point kinetics equations in the dynamical system of the nuclear reactor. This method is based on the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the coefficient matrix. The analytical exponential model calculates the mean and standard deviations of neutrons and precursor populations for the stochastic point kinetics equations with step, ramp, and sinusoidal *** results of the analytical exponential model are compared with published methods and the results of the deterministic point kinetics model. This comparison confirms that the analytical exponential model is an efficient method for solving stochastic stiff point kinetics equations.

Energetic Analysis and Working Fluids Selection for a New Power and Refrigeration Combined Ecological System

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of a new system that combines organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) and vapor compression refrigeration cycle(VCRC) for refrigeration and cogeneration. This system uses low-temperature heat sources such as solar energy, geothermal, industrial waste heat and biomass. The novelty of the proposed system manifests itself essentially in: the development of new ORC-VCRC combination architecture, lowering the ORC condensing temperature, the possibility of refrigeration production by the ORC upstream of the pumping phase, preheating of ORC using VCRC fluid and new configurations based on the integration of heat recovery systems to improve the overall system performance. The first part of this study presents the energetic analysis for the basic system using different working fluids and investigation of the operating parameters effect on the system performance(The system performance is described by the ORC thermal efficiency, the VCRC coefficient of performance and the system overall efficiency). Ten working fluids have been selected in order to provide the most adequate candidates for the proposed system. The results showed that the heating temperature and the cooling temperature have a significant effect on the system performance. The choice of fluid was also mentioned;the obtained results confirmed that the best combination for the basic system is R236fa-acetone. Four system configurations are developed and analyzed in the second part of the study. Also in the same part of the study, we will compare these configurations in terms of the performance rate retained. In the last part, we will make a comparison of this new system with another system.

Thermodynamic Investigation of a Solar Energy Cogeneration Plant Using an Organic Rankine Cycle in Supercritical Conditions

In the present work,a novel Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC)configuration is used for a low-grade heat source cogeneration *** investigation is conducted accordingly into the simultaneous production of electricity and *** proposed configuration relies on concentrated solar power(as heat source)and ambient air(for cooling).Furthermore,two gas ejectors are added to the system in order to optimize the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine *** results show that the thermodynamic and geometric parameters related to these ejectors have an important effect on the overall system *** order to account for the related environmental impact,the following working fluids are considered:HCFC-124,HFC-236fa,HFO-1234yf and *** shown by the numerical simulations,the fluid R1234yf presents the minimal heat consumption and therefore provides an optimal thermal efficiency for the ORC cycle(which is around 29%).However,the refrigerant R236fa displays the highest refrigeration performances with a performance coefficient reaching a value as high as 0.38.

Melatonin and schistosomal antigens ameliorate the anti-oxidative and biochemical response to Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamster

The present study was designed to investigate the potential protective effect of melatonin as an antioxidant separately or in combination with antigens （cerearial; CAP or soluble worm; SWAP） against Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamsters. Each hamster was sensitized with an initial immunization of 0.6 ml of the extracted antigen （30μg protein/mL）. After four days, a second injection of 0.4 mL was given （20μg protein/mL）. Then, each hamster was exposed to 260 ± 20 S. mansoni cercariae followed with melatonin treatment （3.5 mg/kg） for thirty days from the 1st day of post infection. Levels of lipid peroxidation （LPO） products, eatalase （CAT） activity, hepatic glutathione （GSH） and biochemical changes in the liver and kidneys functions were investigated. The results revealed a high significant increasing of LPO and decreasing of CAT and GSH in liver of infected hamsters. Biochemical observations showed severe damage in the liver enzyme activities and increasing cholesterol level in infected animals. Melatonin co-treatment with antigen to the infeeted-hamster attenuated the increase of LPO and restored the activity of CAT and levels of hepatic GSH. Also, the biochemical damages in the liver and kidneys funetions were reduced. The present study suggests that melatonin may be useful in combating free radical-induced damage due to infection toxicity. The immunization with previous antigens resulted in a remarkable improvement on the liver enzyme activities, which were increased after infection. Thus, vaccination of hamsters with antigens （both CAP and SWAP） and melatonin treatment has more potent effect on the enhancement of antioxidant and biochemical of S. mansoni infected-hamster than each treatment separately. Immunization of the hamster with SWAP followed by melatonin was the best way among the other regime treatments to improve the biochemical and antioxidant parameters of the infected-hamsters.

Carnosine and crocin ameliorate oxidative stress in rats with rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury through upregulating HO-1 gene expression

We aimed to investigate whether carnosine(a natural dipeptide found in humans)and crocin(a natural product extracted from saffron and gardenia)can prevent the harmful effects of acute kidney injury(AKI)caused by glycerol-induced rhabdomyolysis with a focus on the role of the nuclear factor E2-related factor-2/heme oxygenase-1(Nrf2/HO-1)signaling ***-six male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups:3 of them received saline,carnosine,and crocin IP for 7 days and the other 3 groups received the same treatment in addition to a single IM injection of 50%glycerol(10 ml/kg,divided between the two limb muscles)on 8th *** animals were sacrificed after 24 h of the IM *** samples,muscles,and kidneys were collected for further *** was evidenced by the histopathological alterations in muscle sections and increased levels of myoglobin in kidney tissue homogenate *** injury was characterized by increased creatinine,kidney injury molecule-1,malondialdehyde,nitric oxide,and decreased catalase *** injury also increased inflammatory markers and histopathological alterations in kidney *** these effects were corrected by pretreatment with carnosine and *** agents could also elevate HO-1 gene ***,both agents failed to restore the declined Nrf2 expression in glycerol-treated *** and crocin can effectively prevent rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI in rats through augmenting gene expression of HO-1 and antioxidant system and suppressing the generation of reactive oxygen species,lipid peroxidation,and inflammatory response.

Pathophysiology of periventricular leukomalacia:what we learned from animal models

Periventricular leukomalacia （PVL）, a white matter injury （WMI） affecting the premature infant＇s brain is commonly associated with ce- rebral palsy （CP）. Among premature infants 〈 1,500 g, approximately 7,000 develop CP yearly and 20,000-30,000 exhibit major cognitive deficits yearly （Volpe, 2009）. PVL results from hypoxia-ischemia （HI） with or without infection and is characterized by white matter necrotic lesions, hypomyelination, microglial activation, astrogliosis, and neuronal death. Risk factors for the development of PVL include： prematurity associated with immature cerebrovascular development, HI insults with lack of appropriate auto-regulation of cerebral blood flow, free radical production, energy deprivation, intrauterine infec- tion and chorioamnionitis. Affected infants show definitive signs of cerebral palsy such as spastic diplegia, seizures, developmental delay, visual and hearing impairment, scoliosis and incontinence by 6-9 months of age. PVL can also occur in term infants with certain con- genital cyanotic heart disease which will not be our focus here （Volpe, 2001）.
