Mechanisms underlying the vascular relaxation activities of Zingiber officinale var. rubrum in thoracic aorta of spontaneously hypertensive rats

Objective: To evaluate vasorelaxant and vasoconstriction effects of Zingiber officinale var. rubrum(ZOVR)on live rats and isolated aortic rings of spontaneously hypertensive rats(SHRs).Methods: Extracts of ZOVR were subjected to in-vivo antihypertensive screening using noninvasive blood pressures in SHRs. The most potent extract, ZOVR petroleum ether extract(ZOP) was then fractionated using n-hexane, chloroform and water. Isolated thoracic aortic rings were harvested and subjected to vascular relaxation studies of n-hexane fraction of ZOP(HFZOP) with incubation of different antagonists such as Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME, 10 μmol/L), indomethacin(10 μmol/L), methylene blue(10 μmol/L), atropine(1 μmol/L), glibenclamide(10 μmol/L), prazosin(0.01 μmol/L), and propranolol(1 μmol/L).Results: During the screening of various ZOVR extracts, ZOP produced the most reduction in blood pressures of SHRs and so did HFZOP. HFZOP significantly decreased phenylephrine-induced contraction and enhanced acetylcholine-induced relaxation. L-NAME, indomethacin, methylene blue, atropine, and glibenclamide significantly potentiated the vasorelaxant effects of HFZOP. Propranolol and prazosin did not alter the vasorelaxant effects of HFZOP. HFZOP significantly suppressed the Ca2+-dependent contraction and influenced the ratio of the responses to phenylephrine in Ca2+-free ***: This study demonstrates that ZOP may exert an antihypertensive effect in the SHR model. Its possible vascular relaxation mechanisms involve nitric oxide and prostacyclin release, activation of cGMP-KATP channels, stimulation of muscarinic receptors, and transmembrane calcium channel or Ca2+release from intracellular stores. Possible active compounds that contribute to the vasorelaxant effects are 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol and 6-shogaol.

The preparation and behavior of powder stearin-based methyl ester sulfonates(MES)with the addition of builder as a glidant agent was *** is an anionic surfactant and its performance is equivalent to petroleum-based linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS),the workhorses of the detergent *** the same time,zeolites or soda ash were the alternative builders for non-phosphate-based *** behavior of powder MES properties was measured in terms of morphology,particle size,cohesion,caking,and *** that,these palm stearin-based MES of carbon chain 16–18 with ratios of 98:2,80:20,and 60:40 in flakes were ground using a high shear mixer by 23,000 rpm to produce powder *** the particle size of MES powder can reduce the powder's cohesion,caking,and *** addition of zeolite or soda ash as a glidant in powdered MES can improve the caking *** high stearic in MES greatly influenced getting fine particle powders and required more glidant *** powder MES with excellent powder characteristics can perform well as a bio-based cleaning product.

Objective:To compare the prognostic factors of mortality among melioidosis patients between lognormal accelerated failure time(AFT),Cox proportional hazards(PH),and Cox PH with time-varying coefficient(TVC)***:A retrospective study was conducted from 2014 to 2019 among 453 patients who were admitted to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah,Kedah and Hospital Tuanku Fauziah,Perlis in Northern Malaysia due to confirmed-cultured *** prognostic factors of mortality from melioidosis were obtained from AFT survival analysis,and Cox’s models and the findings were compared by using the goodness of fit *** analyses were done by using Stata SE version ***:A total of 242 patients(53.4%)*** this study,the median survival time of melioidosis patients was 30.0 days(95%CI 0.0-60.9).Six significant prognostic factors were identified in the Cox PH model and Cox PH-TVC *** AFT survival analysis,a total of seven significant prognostic factors were *** results were found to be only a slight difference between the identified prognostic factors among the *** survival showed better results compared to Cox's models,with the lowest Akaike information criteria and best fitted Cox-snell ***:AFT survival analysis provides more reliable results and can be used as an alternative statistical analysis for determining the prognostic factors of mortality in melioidosis patients in certain situations.

Predictors of in-hospital mortality by logistic regression analysis among melioidosis patients in Northern Malaysia:A retrospective study

Objective:To identify the predictors of mortality among in-hospital melioidosis ***:A total of 453 patients in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah,Kedah,and Hospital Tuanku Fauziah,Perlis with culture-confirmed melioidosis were retrospectively included in the *** multiple logistic regression was used to obtain the final model of predictors of mortality from *** analysis was performed using STATA/SE ***:A total of 50.11%(227/453)of the patients died at the hospital,and a majority(86.75%,393/453)of cases were *** logistic regression estimated that the bacteremic type of melioidosis,low platelet count,abnormal white blood cell counts,and increased urea value were predictors of *** results showed that bacteremic melioidosis increased the risk of death by 4.39 times(OR 4.39,95%CI 1.83-10.55,P=0.001)compared to non-bacteremic *** on laboratory test,the adjusted ORs from the final model showed that all three blood investigations were included as the associated factors of mortality for the disease[high white blood cell(>10×10^(9)/L):OR 2.43,95%CI1.41-4.17,P7800μmol/L):OR 5.53,95%CI 2.50-12.30,P<0.001;and low level of urea(<2500μmol/L):OR 3.52,95%CI 1.71-7.23,P=0.001].Conclusions:Routine blood investigations during a hospital admission can early identify predictors of mortality in melioidosis patients.

At present,a life-cycle assessment of energy storage systems(ESSs)is not widely available in the *** an assessment is increasingly vital nowadays as ESS is recognized as one of the important equipment in power systems to reduce peak demands for deferring or avoiding augmentation in the network and power *** the battery cost is still very high at present,a comprehensive assessment is necessary to determine the optimum ESS capacity so that the maximum financial gain is achievable at the end of the batteries’***,an effective life-cycle assessment is proposed in this paper to show how the optimum ESS capacity can be determined such that the maximum net financial gain is achievable at the end of the batteries’lifespan when ESS is used to perform peak demand reductions for the customer or utility *** findings reveal the positive financial viability of ESS on the power grid,otherwise the projection of the financial viability is often seemingly poor due to the high battery cost with a short battery *** improved battery degradation model is used in this assessment,which can simulate the battery degradation accurately in a situation whereby the charging current,discharging current,and temperature of the batteries are intermittent on a site during peak demand *** assessment is crucial to determine the maximum financial benefits brought by ESS.

The Impact of Firm Characteristics, Industry Types, and Financial Ratios on SMEs＇ Utilization of Tax Incentives

This study aims to contribute to the growing literature on issues of tax incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises （SMEs）. Through comprehensive exploration of data, the study investigates factors leading to successful and unsuccessful utilization of tax incentives among SMEs. Financial ratios were calculated based on the information retrieved from the companies＇ annual financial statement. Apparently, these financial ratios are evidence of how successful the companies are in utilizing the tax incentives. In this study, 129 small companies and 71 medium-sized companies were selected as samples for the period of 2003-2007. The result indicates that financial structure such as retained earnings, tax burden, cash flow, and inventory level determined the ability of companies to utilize tax incentives; hence leading to higher earnings generated from the business operation. The age of the companies affects the utilization of tax incentives and this denotes that older companies are more capable of generating higher earnings. Hence, a thorough analysis of the data allows us not only to determine the success of the company in utilizing tax incentives but also to identify the determinants that impact their performance.

Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Malaria in Perak, Malaysia

Malaria incidence in Perak, Malaysia has generally declined, but there remain regions of high incidence. The spatio-temporal distribution pattern of malaria in Perak was studied using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and spatial statistical tools. Malaria data cases at the subdistrict level in Perak from 2007 to 2011 were analysed to determine the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of malaria incidence. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and spatial statistical tools were used to identify spatial correlation in the data and malaria hot-spots. Spatial correlation was tested by using an autocorrelation method called Moran’s I. Hot spot analysis was done using Getis-Ord G*?statistic technique. Malaria incidence rates were categorized into 3 classes to map the spatial distribution. Malaria cases in Perak were geo-spatially clustered. Most of the hot spots locations were in Kenering, Ulu Kinta, Gerik and Kampar sub-districts. The prevalence of malaria among foreigners was noticeably higher than Malaysians. Improved surveillance of foreign workers can prevent outbreaks and identify high risk areas. This study implies that geographic-based mapping and information system are needed for an effective malaria control.
