Assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C virus(hCV)infection is considered a relevant part of patient care and key for decision *** liver biopsy has been considered the gold standard for staging liver fibrosis,it is an invasive technique and subject to sampling errors and significant intra-and inter-observer *** the last decade,several noninvasive markers were proposed for liver fibrosis diagnosis in chronic hCV infection,with variable *** the clear advantage of being noninvasive,a more objective interpretation of test results may overcome the mentioned intra-and inter-observer variability of liver *** addition,these tests can theoretically offer a more accurate view of fibrogenic events occurring in the entire liver with the advantage of providing frequent fibrosis evaluation without additional ***,in general,these tests show low accuracy in discriminating between intermediate stages of fibrosis and may be influenced by several hepatic and extrahepatic *** methods are either serum markers(usually combined in a mathematical model)or imaging modalities that can be used separately or combined in algorithms to improve *** this review we will discuss the different noninvasive methods that are currently available for the evaluation of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C,their advantages,limitations and application in clinical practice.

We present a versatile, tuneable, and selective nanoparficle-based lectin biosensor, based on flocculation of ternary supramolecular nanoparticle networks （NPN）, formed through the sequential binding of three building blocks. The three building blocks are ^-cyclodextrin-capped CdTe quantum dots, tetraethylene glycol-tethered mannose-adamantane cross-linkers （ADTEGMan）, and the tetravalent lectin Concanavalin A （Cona）. The working principle of this selective sensor lies in the dual orthogonal molecular interactions of the linker, uniting adamantane-^-cyclodextrin and mannose-lectin interaction motifs, respectively. Only when the lectin is present, sequential binding takes place, leading to in situ self-organization of the sensor through the formation of ternary supramolecular networks. Monitoring the loss of fluorescence signal of the quantum dots in solution, caused by controlled network formation and consecutive flocculation and sedimentation, leads to selective, qualitative, and quantitative lectin detection. Fluorescent sedimented networks can be observed by the naked eye or under UV illumination for a lectin concentration of up to 10 8 M. Quantitative detection is possible at 100 min with a lower detection limit of approximately 5 × 10 ^-8 M.

The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAhs） were determined in surface sediment samples from nine sites located at the Iguau River Basin in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba,Brazil to evaluate their distribution and *** total concentration of the PAhs was greater for sediments from highly urbanized areas,while the sediments from the Iraí Environmental Protection Area（Iraí EPA） showed significantly low *** sediments from the Iguau and Barigui rivers were classified as highly contaminated,while those from the Cercado and Curralinho rivers were classified as moderately *** predominance of PAhs containing two to four aromatic rings in most of the samples suggested the direct input of raw sewage into the water resources ***[g,h,i]perylene,dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene were predominant in sediments from the areas under the greatest urban and industrial *** correlation between thermodynamic stability and the kinetics of evolution presented by the isomeric pairs indicated that combustion is the predominant source of PAhs in the sediments because the combustion of fossil fuels affected most of the points evaluated,followed by combustion of biomass and eventually combustion of oil product *** general,the results showed that areas under strong urban influence,as well as the Iraí EPA,receive contributions of PAhs from similar sources.

A comprehensive study on the processing of Co:ZnO nanostructured ceramics:Defect chemistry engineering and grain growth kinetics

In this report,we present a systematic study on the preparation of Co:ZnO ceramics via a standard solid-state route from different Co precursors(Co_(3)O_(4),CoO,and metallic Co)and atmospheres(O_(2)and Ar).Particular emphasis is given to defect chemistry engineering and the sintering growth ***-principles calculations based on density functional theory are employed to determine the formation en-ergy of the main point defects in ZnO and Co:ZnO *** on the theoretical results,a set of chemical reactions is *** microstructural characterization is also performed to determine the degree of Co incorporation into the ZnO *** samples prepared in Ar atmosphere and metal-lic Co present the highest Co solubility limit(lower apparent Co incorporation activation energy)due to the incongruent ZnO *** of the parameters of the sintering growth kinetics reveals that Co_(3)O_(4)is the best sintering additive to achieve larger grain sizes,and possible higher densi-ties,in both sintering atmospheres,while metallic Co is the best to achieve the smallest grain size with higher Co concentration and homogeneous spatial distribution for a subsequent reduction of *** results show that the sintering in O_(2)effectively promotes zinc vacancies in the ZnO structure,while the sintering in Ar promotes zinc interstitial *** findings contribute to understanding the preparation of Co-doped ZnO ceramics and the sintering growth kinetics,which may improve the state of the art in processing the material at both bulk and nanometric scales.

Massive Pericardial Effusion as the First Manifestation of hypothyroidism in a Male Patient

This article intends to report a rare case of massive pericardial effusion as the first manifestation of hypothyroidism. A 45-year-old male patient, accompanied by a cardiology department, suddenly started to present signs of dyspnea and tiredness. he was submitted to an echocardiogram and diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy associated with a moderate pericardial effusion and low ejection of fraction. The laboratory tests showed elevated TSh levels （13.20 mIU/L）, what leads to the hypothyroidism diagnose and enable to start the treatment with levothyroxine. The patient has not followed correctly the treatment, reason why he has not showed any improves. he was admitted in the hospital to cardiology monitoring and the chest radiography confirmed an intense pericardial effusion. Then, the patient was submitted to the pericardiocentesis procedure, which was capable of remove the pericardial fluid for laboratory analysis and fragment of the pericardial sac for neoplastic cell research. After the hospital discharge, he was maintained in outpatient follow-up, when showed an important improvement in the clinical state.

Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract and it affects four times more men than women. The relationship between bladder tumors and Schistosoma haematobium is well known, but only sporadic cases of bladder infection due to Schistosoma mansoni have been reported. Schistosoma mansoni infection causes an endemic disease in Brazil (schistosomiasis) and gastrointestinal disorders are very common, but disease of the urinary tract is atypical. The aim of this study was to describe a case of a patient presenting schistosomiasis (S. mansoni) and urothelial bladder carcinoma. In this case, a 37-year-old man with intermittent painless gross hematuria was investigated. Cystoscopy revealed a small pedunculated lesion in the bladder dome. Transurethral resection revealed urothelial carcinoma of the bladder, low degree, unrepresentative of the muscular layer of the bladder. After 30 days, a new transurethral resection was performed to sample acquisition of the muscular layer on the basis of the scar. histopathology was negative for malignancy (Tumor Node Metastasis: TNM-T1). During this procedure, there was evidence of dark rounded lesion in the bladder dome. It was excised and the histopathology showed viable eggs of Schistosoma mansoni. The patient was treated orally with oxamniquine and remained in oncological monitoring with cystoscopy quarterly and serial clinical evaluation. This case reveals a rare finding of Schistosoma mansoni in the bladder and urothelial bladder carcinoma coexisting in the same patient.
