Carbon allocation in Picea jezoensis:Adaptation strategies of a non-treeline species at its upper elevation limit

Understanding the physiological adaptations of non-treeline trees to environmental stress is important to understand future shifts in species composition and distribution of current treeline ecotone.The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanisms of the formation of the upper elevation limit of non-treeline tree species,Picea jezoensis,and the carbon allocation strategies of the species on Changbai Mountain.We employed the^(13)C in situ pulse labeling technique to trace the distribution of photosynthetically assimilated carbon in Picea jezoensis at different elevational positions(tree species at its upper elevation limit(TSAUE,1,700 m a.s.l.)under treeline ecotone;tree species at a lower elevation position(TSALE,1,400 m a.s.l.).We analyzed^(13)C and the non-structural carbohydrate(NSC)concentrations in various tissues following labeling.Our findings revealed a significant shift in carbon allocation in TSAUE compared to TSALE.There was a pronounced increase inδ^(13)C allocation to belowground components(roots,soil,soil respiration)in TSAUE compared to TSALE.Furthermore,the C flow rate within the plant-soil-atmosphere system was faster,and the C residence time in the plant was shorter in TSAUE.The trends indicate enhanced C sink activity in belowground tissues in TSAUE,with newly assimilated C being preferentially directed there,suggesting a more conservative C allocation strategy by P.jezoensis at higher elevations under harsher environments.Such a strategy,prioritizing C storage in roots,likely aids in withstanding winter cold stress at the expense of aboveground growth during the growing season,leading to reduced growth of TSAUE compared to TSALE.The results of the present study shed light on the adaptive mechanisms governing the upper elevation limits of non-treeline trees,and enhances our understanding of how non-treeline species might respond to ongoing climate change.

Optimal Operation Strategy of Electricity-Hydrogen Regional Energy System under Carbon-Electricity Market Trading

Given the“double carbon”objective and the drive toward low-carbon power,investigating the integration and interaction within the carbon-electricity market can enhance renewable energy utilization and facilitate energy conservation and emission reduction endeavors.However,further research is necessary to explore operational optimization methods for establishing a regional energy system using Power-to-Hydrogen(P2H)technology,focusing on participating in combined carbon-electricity market transactions.This study introduces an innovative Electro-Hydrogen Regional Energy System(EHRES)in this context.This system integrates renewable energy sources,a P2H system,cogeneration units,and energy storage devices.The core purpose of this integration is to optimize renewable energy utilization and minimize carbon emissions.This study aims to formulate an optimal operational strategy for EHRES,enabling its dynamic engagement in carbon-electricity market transactions.The initial phase entails establishing the technological framework of the electricity-hydrogen coupling system integrated with P2H.Subsequently,an analysis is conducted to examine the operational mode of EHRES as it participates in carbon-electricity market transactions.Additionally,the system scheduling model includes a stepped carbon trading price mechanism,considering the combined heat and power generation characteristics of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell(HFC).This facilitates the establishment of an optimal operational model for EHRES,aiming to minimize the overall operating cost.The simulation example illustrates that the coordinated operation of EHRES in carbon-electricity market transactions holds the potential to improve renewable energy utilization and reduce the overall system cost.This result carries significant implications for attaining advantages in both low-carbon and economic aspects.

Hypolipidemic activity and mechanism of active components of Dracocephalum moldavica L. tea

Hyperlipidemia is associated with many diseases and considered the main contributing factor in the development of metabolic syndrome. The traditional Mongolian medicine Dracocephalum moldavica L. (D. moldavica) is commonly consumed as a tea (non-Camellia tea) for the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease， hypertension， atherosclerosis， and other diseases. Here， we attempted to investigate the hypolipidemic activity and mechanisms underlying the active components of D. moldavica. First， the mechanism underlying the lipid accumulation-reducing effects of the D. moldavica ethanol extract was determined using in vitro experiments， and four polar fractions were screened for activity. Then， the effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of D. moldavica (EAD) on lowering blood lipid was confirmed in vivo. The combination of network pharmacological and serum pharmacochemistry analyses showed that apigenin， luteolin， and naringenin of EAD existed in prototype form in the drug-containing serum of rats. We also determined the content of the three active ingredients in EAD. Finally， in vitro experiments showed that apigenin， luteolin， and naringenin improved oleic acid-induced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells by regulating the PPAR signaling pathway (PPARα， CPT1， and FABP3). Our findings provide mechanistic insights and application prospects for the prevention and treatment of hypolipidemia using D. moldavica.

To the Editor:Varicocele(VC)is a vascular disease and considered as the main cause of male infertility.^([1])The incidence of VC in the common male population was 4.4–22.6%,of which the incidence of primary infertility was 35–40%,while the incidence of secondary infertility was as high as 80%.^([2])The exact pathophysiological mechanism of male infertility caused by VC and regulative molecules are still unclear.Clear and definite molecular markers of VC disease are helpful for early prevention and timely treatment.This study aimed to screen candidate regulative molecules playing a role in male infertility caused by VC.

Anti-osteosarcoma trimodal synergistic therapy using NiFe-LDH and MXene nanocomposite for enhanced biocompatibility and efficacy

Osteosarcoma is usually resistant to immunotherapy and,thus primarily relies on surgical resection and high-dosage chemotherapy.Unfortunately,less invasive or toxic therapies such as photothermal therapy(PTT)and chemodynamic therapy(CDT)generally failed to show satisfactory outcomes.Adequate multimodal therapies with proper safety profiles may provide better solutions for osteosarcoma.Herein,a simple nanocomposite that synergistically combines CDT,PTT,and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma treatment was fabricated.In this composite,small 2D Ni Fe-LDH flakes were processed into 3D hollow nanospheres via template methods to encapsulate 5-Fluorouracil(5-FU)with high loading capacity.The nanospheres were then adsorbed onto larger 2D Ti3C2MXene monolayers and finally shielded by bovine serum albumin(BSA)to form 5-FU@Ni Fe-LDH/Ti3C2/BSA nanoplatforms(5NiTiB).Both in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that the 5-FU induced chemotherapy,Ni Fe-LDH driven chemodynamic effects,and MXene-based photothermal killing collectively exhibited a synergistic“all-in-one”anti-tumor effect.5NiTiB improved tumor suppression rate fromnanotherapeutic platform achieved higher therapeutic efficacy with a lower agent dose,thereby minimizing side effects.Moreover,the composite is simple to produce,enabling the fine-tuning of dosages to suit different requirements.Thus,the platform is versatile and efficient,with potential for further development.

An efficient Ni-catalyzed four-component 1,4-carbocarbonylation of 1,3-enynes with activated alkyl halides and arylboronic acids under atmospheric pressure of CO is presented.By tuning the electronic and steric effects of alkyl radicals,both electronrich and electron-deficient 1,3-enynes were compatible with this cascade.This protocol features mild conditions,broad substrate scope,excellent functional group compatibility and facile gram-scale synthesis,providing a practical approach to the quaternary carbon center-containing allenyl ketones.Mechanistic study revealed that the acyl-NiIIspecies plays an important role in both the coupling and the alkyl radical generation processes.

Flexible mille-feuille structure electromagnetic interference shielding film with excellent thermal conductivity and Joule heating

The intelligent electronic devices have urgent demands for electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding films with excellent heat dissipation capability.However,it is challenging to obtain excellent EMI shielding and thermal conductivity performances simultaneously.Herein,inspired by mille-feuille structure,the multifunctional EMI shielding films developed by a layer-by-layer self-assembly and hot-pressing strategy.The ingenious introduction of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs)with large specific surface area and highly conductive into the network formed by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils(TOCNFs)with large aspect ratio to form the TOCNFs/AgNPs.And the graphene nanoplates(GNPs)with high conductivity loss distributed alternately with TOCNFs/AgNPs to construct mille-feuille structure,which had highly efficient conductive network,complete thermally conduction pathway and rich heterogeneous interfaces.Consequently,the designed films presented high electrical conductivity of 8520 S/cm,superb EMI effectiveness(SE)of 98.05 dB,and excellent thermal conductivity of 18.82 W/(m·K).Furthermore,the films possessed outstanding Joule heating performances with low voltages,including high heating temperature(100℃),fast response time(lity and reliability.Thus,such high-performance EMI shielding films with fascinating thermal conductivity and Joule heating performances have substantial application in flexible electronics,electromagnetic waves shielding and thermal management.

Visual test paper based on Au/δ-MnO_(2) hollow nanosphere oxidase-like activity regulation using hexavalent chromium as a smart switch

Paper-based sensing platform is a point of need analytical toolkit for safety testing.However,the sensitivity,specificity,and simplicity are still challenging.Herein,we report a novel strategy(Au/δ-MnO_(2) hollow nanosphere and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB)induced test strips for signal-on detection)that can be utilized for hexavalent chromium(Cr^(6+))detection.Interestingly,Cr^(6+)(CrO_(4)^(2−)) as a smart switch can remarkably enhance the oxidase-like activity of Au/δ-MnO_(2) hollow nanosphere.The presence of Cr^(6+) can regulate the surface electronic redistribution of Au/δ-MnO_(2) and adjust the geometric configuration,which leads to the improvement in oxidase-like activity of Au/δ-MnO_(2).As a proof-of-concept application,a visual paper-based sensing platform of Cr^(6+) along with quantitative analysis by the test strips was successfully constructed.This paper-based sensing platform exhibits a linear range with excellent selectivity for other interfering substances and lower limit of detection of 0.09μmol·L^(−1),providing a promising toolkit at-home Cr^(6+) measurement and environmental monitoring.

The OsBSK1-2-MAPK module regulates blast resistance in rice

Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase OsBSK1-2 was reported to play an important role in regulation of response to rice blast,but the signaling pathway remained unknown.In this study,we identified OsMAPKKK18 and previously uncharacterized MAPKKKs OsMAPKKK16 and OsMAPKKK19 that interact with OsBSK1-2.Expression of all three MAPKKKs was induced by Magnaporthe oryzae infection,and all three induced cell death when transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves.Knockout of OsMAPKKK16 and OsMAPKKK18 compromised blast resistance and overexpression of OsMAPKKK19 increased blast resistance,indicating that all three MAPKKKs are involved in regulation of rice blast response.Furthermore,both OsMAPKKK16 and OsMAPKKK19 interacted with and phosphorylated OsMKK4 and OsMKK5,and chitin-induced MAPK activation was suppressed in osmapkkk16 and osbsk1-2 mutants.OsMAPKKK18 was earlier reported to interact with and phosphorylate OsMKK4 and affect chitin-induced MAPK activation,suggesting that OsBSK1-2 is involved in regulation of immunity through multiple MAPK signaling pathways.Unlike BSK1 in Arabidopsis,OsBSK1-2 was not involved in response to avirulent M.oryzae strains.Taken together,our results revealed important roles of OsMAPKKK16/18/19 and a OsBSK1-2-OsMAPKKK16/18/19-OsMKK4/5 module in regulating response to rice blast.

Effects of Lactobacillus paracasei N1115 on gut microbial imbalance and liver function in patients with hepatitis B-related cirrhosis

BACKGROUND Hepatitis B cirrhosis(HBC)is a chronic disease characterized by irreversible diffuse liver damage and aggravated by intestinal microbial imbalance and metabolic dysfunction.Although the relationship between certain single probiotics and HBC has been explored,the impact of the complex ready-to-eat Lactobacillus paracasei N1115(LP N1115)supplement on patients with HBC has not been determined.AIM To compare the changes in the microbiota,inflammatory factor levels,and liver function before and after probiotic treatment in HBC patients.METHODS This study included 160 HBC patients diagnosed at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University between October 2018 and December 2020.Patients were randomly divided into an intervention group that received LP N1115 supplementation and routine treatment and a control group that received routine treatment only.Fecal samples were collected at the onset and conclusion of the 12-wk intervention period.The structure of the intestinal microbiota and the levels of serological indicators,such as liver function and inflammatory factors,were assessed.RESULTS Following LP N1115 intervention,the intestinal microbial diversity significantly increased in the intervention group(Pnal microbiota was characterized by an increase in the proportions of probiotic microbes and a reduction in harmful bacteria.Additionally,the intervention group demonstrated notable improvements in liver function indices and significantly lower levels of inflammatory factors(Pliorating intestinal microbial imbalance in HBC patients by modulating the structure of the intestinal microbiota,improving liver function,and reducing inflammatory factor levels.
