Multimodal Fusion of Brain Imaging Data: Methods and Applications

Neuroimaging data typically include multiple modalities,such as structural or functional magnetic resonance imaging,dif-fusion tensor imaging,and positron emission tomography,which provide multiple views for observing and analyzing the brain.To lever-age the complementary representations of different modalities,multimodal fusion is consequently needed to dig out both inter-modality and intra-modality information.With the exploited rich information,it is becoming popular to combine multiple modality data to ex-plore the structural and functional characteristics of the brain in both health and disease status.In this paper,we first review a wide spectrum of advanced machine learning methodologies for fusing multimodal brain imaging data,broadly categorized into unsupervised and supervised learning strategies.Followed by this,some representative applications are discussed,including how they help to under-stand the brain arealization,how they improve the prediction of behavioral phenotypes and brain aging,and how they accelerate the biomarker exploration of brain diseases.Finally,we discuss some exciting emerging trends and important future directions.Collectively,we intend to offer a comprehensive overview of brain imaging fusion methods and their successful applications,along with the chal-lenges imposed by multi-scale and big data,which arises an urgent demand on developing new models and platforms.

Rational Design of Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Ferrites as Air Electrode for Highly Active and Durable Reversible Protonic Ceramic Cells

Reversible protonic ceramic cells(RePCCs)hold promise for efficient energy storage,but their practicality is hindered by a lack of high-performance air electrode materials.Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite Sr_(3)Fe_(2)O_(7−δ)(SF)exhibits superior proton uptake and rapid ionic conduction,boosting activity.However,excessive proton uptake during RePCC operation degrades SF’s crystal structure,impacting durability.This study introduces a novel A/B-sites co-substitution strategy for modifying air electrodes,incorporating Sr-deficiency and Nb-substitution to create Sr_(2.8)Fe_(1.8)Nb_(0.2)O_(7−δ)(D-SFN).Nb stabilizes SF’s crystal,curbing excessive phase formation,and Sr-deficiency boosts oxygen vacancy concentration,optimizing oxygen transport.The D-SFN electrode demonstrates outstanding activity and durability,achieving a peak power density of 596 mW cm^(−2)in fuel cell mode and a current density of−1.19 A cm^(−2)in electrolysis mode at 1.3 V,650℃,with excellent cycling durability.This approach holds the potential for advancing robust and efficient air electrodes in RePCCs for renewable energy storage.

Background:The Korea national Health and Nutrition Examination Survey nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(K-naFLD)score was recently developed with the intent to operationally define nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(naFLD).However,there remained an external validation that confirmed its diagnostic performance,especially in patients with alcohol consumption or hepatitis virus infection.Methods:Diagnostic accuracy of the K-naFLD score was evaluated in a hospital-based cohort consisting of 1388 participants who received Fibroscan®.Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models and the contrast estimation of receiver operating characteristic curves were used for validation of the K-naFLD score,fatty liver index(FLI),and hepatic steatosis index(HSI).Results:K-naFLD-moderate[adjusted odds ratio(aOR)=2.53,95%confidence interval(CI):1.13-5.65]and K-naFLD-high(aOR=4.14,95%CI:1.69-10.13)groups showed higher risks of fatty liver compared to the K-naFLD-low group after adjustments for demographic and clinical characteristics,and FLI-moderate and FLI-high groups revealed aORs of 2.05(95%CI:1.22-3.43)and 1.51(95%CI:0.78-2.90),respectively.In addition,the HSI was less predictive for Fibroscan®-defined fatty liver.Both K-naFLD and FLI also demonstrated high accuracy in the prediction of fatty liver in patients with alcohol consumption and chronic hepatitis virus infection,and the adjusted area under curve values were comparable between K-naFLD and FLI.Conclusions:Externally validation of the K-naFLD and FLI showed that these scores may be a useful,noninvasive,and non-imaging modality for the identification of fatty liver.In addition,these scores also predicted fatty liver in patients with alcohol consumption and chronic hepatitis virus infection.

TonEBP expression is essential in the IL-1β–induced migration and invasion of human A549 lung cancer cells

Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate among all cancers,in part because it readily metastasizes.The tumor microenvironment,comprising blood vessels,fibroblasts,immune cells,and macrophages[including tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs)],is closely related to cancer cell growth,migration,and invasion.TAMs secrete several cytokines,including interleukin(IL)-1β,which participate in cancer migration and invasion.p21-activated kinase 1(PAK1),an important signaling molecule,induces cell migration and invasion in several carcinomas.Tonicityresponsive enhancer-binding protein(TonEBP)is also known to participate in cancer cell growth,migration,and invasion.However,the mechanisms by which it increases lung cancer migration remain unclear.Therefore,in this study,we aimed to elucidate the mechanisms by which IL-1βand TonEBP affect lung cancer cell migration and invasion.We found that A549 cocultured-MΦ-secreted IL-1βinduced A549 cell migration and invasion via the PAK1 pathway.TonEBP deficiency reduced A549 cell migration and invasion and increased responsiveness to IL-1β–induced migration and invasion.PAK1 phosphorylation,which was promoted by IL-1β,was reduced when TonEBP was depleted.These results suggest that TonEBP plays an important role in IL-1βinduction and invasiveness of A549 cells via the PAK1 pathway.These findings could be valuable in identifying potential targets for lung cancer treatment.

Alleviation of the plastic deformation of gel ink under strong stress through an esterification of xanthan gum reinforcing its double helix structure

As a natural organic polymer,xanthan gum(XG)can alleviate the plastic deformation of gel ink under strong stress and realize the reasonable regulation of the rheological properties of gel ink.However,as the double-helix structure connected by hydrogen bonds cannot resist the mechanical environment of strong stress,XG shows poor shear resistance.In this study,a polymer gel with interpenetrating polymer network structure was prepared by esterifying XG,taking polystyrene maleic anhydride(SMA)as the modifier.In addition to retaining the excellent rheological properties of XG,the generated polymer gel also exhibited high shear resistance.The optimal addition amount of the esterification reaction modifier was determined as mXG:mSMA=5:3 according to the gel ink standard.With this amount,the viscosity of the modified xanthan gum(SXG)gel increased to 1578.8 mPa·s and 100.7 mPa·s at shear rates of 4 s1 and 383 s1,respectively,and the shear resistance increased more than 2 times compared to the unmodified one.It is because of the ester bond formed by esterification that the reaction strengthens the interaction between molecular segments,enabling the new gel to resist to strong mechanical stress.The new polymer gel studied in this paper and the proposed mechanism of action provide new insights for the development of high-end gel ink and also provide theoretical support for the study of rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids.

Superwetting Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) anchored mesh with enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities for efficient water purification

Superwetting materials have drawn unprecedented attention in the treatment of oily wastewater due to their preferable anti-fouling property and selective oil/water separation.However,it is still a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and environmentally friendly materials,which can be stably applied to purify the actual complicated wastewater.Here,a Ag/Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) heterostructure anchored copper mesh was intentionally synthesized using a facile two-step hydrothermal method.The resultant mesh with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity was capable of separating various oil/water mixtures with superior separation efﬁciency and high permeationﬂux driven by gravity.Beneﬁting from the joint effects of the smaller band gap of Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) heterojunction,inherent antibacterial capacity of Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) and Ag nanoparticles,favorable conductive substrate,as well as the hierarchical structure with superwettability,such mesh presented remarkably enhanced degradation capability toward organic dyes under visible light irradiation and antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli(E.coli)and Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)compared with the pure Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) coated mesh.Impressively,the mesh exhibited bifunctional water puriﬁcation performance,in which organic dyes were eliminated simultaneously from water during oil/water separation in oneﬁltration process.More importantly,this mesh behaved exceptional chemical resistance,mechanical stability and long-term reusability.Therefore,this material with multifunctional integration may hold promising potential for steady water puriﬁcation in practice.

Discordant patterns of genetic variation between mitochondrial and microsatellite markers in Acanthogobius ommaturus across the coastal areas of China

Acanthogobius ommaturus, which belongs to the family Gobiidae, is a euryhaline and demersal fish that is widely distributed in the coastal areas, harbors, and estuaries of China, D. P. R. Korea and Japan. In this study, the genetic diversity and genetic structure of five geographical populations of A. ommaturus was assessed using the mitochondrial hypervariable region gene and microsatellite markers. The results of the two genetic markers indicated that the A. ommaturus populations had a high level of genetic diversity. The mitochondrial marker detected weak genetic differentiation among populations, and the Neighbor-Joining tree showed that there was no obvious pedigree branches and geographic structure as well. However, population of Zhoushan showed significant genetic differentiation with other populations by microsatellite markers. The population of A.ommaturus has not experienced bottleneck effect recently. We speculated that the Pleistocene climate change and juvenile fish dispersal played an important role in the population differentiation of A. ommaturus.

Understanding the rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance genes mediated by Is26

Insertion sequences(ISs)promote the transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs)across bacterial populations.However,their contributions and dynamics during the transmission of resistance remain unclear.In this study,we selected is26 as a representative transposable element to decipher the relationship between ISs and ARGs and to investigate their transfer features and transmission trends.We retrieved 2656 translocatable IS26-bounded units with ARGs(tiS26-bUs-ARGs)in complete bacterial genomes from the NCBI RefSeq database.In total,124 ARGs spanning 12 classes of antibiotics were detected,and the average contribution rate of IS26 to these genes was 41.2%.We found that IS26-bounded units(IS26-bUs)mediated extensive ARG dissemination within the bacteria of the Gammaproteobacteria class,showing strong transfer po-tential between strains,species,and even phyla.The Is26-bUs expanded in bacterial populations over time,and their temporal expansion trend was significantly correlated with antibiotic usage.This wide dissemination could be due to the nonspecific target site preference of is26.Finally,we experimentally confirmed that the introduction of a single copy of is26 could lead to the formation of a composite transposon mediating the transmission of“passenger”genes.These observations extend our knowledge of the Is26 and provide new insights into the mediating role of ISs in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance.

Interconnected MXene/Graphene Network Constructed by Soft Template for Multi‑Performance Improvement of Polymer Composites

The multi-functionalization of polymer composites refers to the ability to connect multiple properties through simple structural design and simultaneously achieve multi-performance optimization.The large-scale design and mass production to realize the reasonable structure design of multifunctional polymer composites are urgently remaining challenges.Herein,the multifunctional MXene/graphene/polymer composites with three-dimensional thermally and electrically conductive network structures are fabricated via the utilization of the microstructure of the soft template,and a facile dispersion dip-coating approach.As a result,the polymer composites have a multiperformance improvement.At the MXene and graphene content of 18.7 wt%,the superior throughplane thermal conductivity of polymer composite is 2.44 W m^(−1)K^(−1),which is 1118%higher than that of the polymer matrix.The electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding effectiveness of the sample reaches 43.3 dB in the range of X-band.And the mechanical property of the sample has advanced 4 times compared with the polymer matrix.The excellent EMI shielding and thermal management performance,along with the effortless and easy-to-scalable producing techniques,imply promising perspectives of the polymer composites in the next-generation smart electronic devices.

Bio-inspired Attachment Mechanism of Dynastes Hercules:Vertical Climbing for On-Orbit Assembly Legged Robots

With the increasing size of space facilities,on-orbit assembly requires robots to move on different heights of trusses.This paper proposes a bio-inspired attachment mechanism for robot feet to enable climbing on different heights of trusses.Inspired by the attachment and grasping abilities of Dynastes Hercules,we utilize its foot microstructures,such as microhooks and setae,to achieve efficient contact and firm grip with the surface.The morphology and arrangement of these structures can inspire the design of robot feet to improve their grasping and stability performance.We study the biological structure of Dynastes Hercules,design and optimize the bio-inspired structure,analyze the influence of various factors from theoretical and experimental perspectives,and verify the feasibility of the scheme through simulation.We propose an ideal climbing strategy that provides useful reference for robot applications in practice.Moreover,the influence laws of various factors in this paper can be applied to robot foot design to improve their operation ability and stability performance in the space environment.This bio-inspired mechanism can improve robot working range and efficiency,which is critical for on-orbit assemblyin space.
