The aerial parts of land plants are covered with cuticu- lar waxes that limit non-stomatal water loss and gaseous exchanges, and protect plants from ultraviolet radiation and pathogen attacks. They are composed of very-long-chain fatty acids （VLCFAs; C20 to C34） in addition to their deriva-tives, aldehydes, alkanes, primary and secondary alcohols, and wax esters. Due to their physical properties, such as solid-ity at room temperature and a translucency ranging from transparent to opaque, plant waxes have been used as raw materials in the production of cosmetics, detergents, plas-tics, soaps, paints, drugs, lubricants, and high-value renew-able fuels. Many genes involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis and export have been characterized by forward and reverse genetic approaches as well as by stem epidermis transcrip-tome analysis. The regulatory mechanisms of cuticular wax biosynthesis have been reported at the transcriptional, post- transcriptional, and translational levels. Recent advances in cuticular wax biosynthesis and its regulation are reviewed in this paper.

A variable magnetization(VM) motor by incorporating magnets that can be flexibly configured with variable magnetization process is proposed to meet the emerging requirements on motor efficiency and actuator compliance in robotic applications. A generalized spin torque model is established which provides a relationship between the motor torque and two different types of motor inputs, the current inputs and the magnet magnetizations. Avariable magnetization process is proposed based on the study of the hysteresis properties of the magnetic materials and the design criteria for implementing the variable magnetization process with current pulses are established. The feasibility of the variable magnetization is validated with experimental data and the motor functions and performances are numerically demonstrated and evaluated. The results show that the VM motor can maintain high efficiency by switching between two actuation modes. Controllable stiffness at different equilibria can be also achieved with the VM motor with instantaneous magnetizing current pulses.

A novel palladium-catalyzed oxidative cyclopropanation of enamides and norbornenes has been developed. The reaction proceeded through palladium-catalyzed vinyl C–H bond activation of enamides followed by two migratory insertions, β-(N)H elimination and hydrolyzation cascade steps. The reaction tolerates a range of functional groups and provides an effective method for the synthesis of cyclopropane-fused norbornanes in good yields under mild conditions.

This work aims at finding pedestrian walking characteristics at U-type stairs according to the width change of stairs and appropriate spot for installing piezoelectric energy *** number of pedestrian at two kinds of stairs(one is stairs with 1.5 m in width and the other is stairs with 3 m in width) was estimated by calculating the number of steps on the stairs by a zone which is divided into 30 cm×30 *** result shows high density in the middle in the case of narrow stairs but traffic is concentrated on stair inside(pillar side) in stairs with large *** conclusion,the location for installation of piezoelectric energy harvesting system should be considered differently on stairs width and the number of installation depends on total expected traffic and the expected traffic for a device.

As root water uptake（RWU）is an important link in the water and heat exchange between plants and ambient air,improving its parameterization is key to enhancing the performance of land surface model *** different types of RWU functions have been adopted in land surface models,there is no evidence as to which scheme most applicable to maize farmland *** on the 2007–09 data collected at the farmland ecosystem field station in Jinzhou,the RWU function in the Common Land Model（Co LM）was optimized with scheme options in light of factors determining whether roots absorb water from a certain soil layer（W_x）and whether the baseline cumulative root efficiency required for maximum plant transpiration（W_c）is *** sensibility of the parameters of the optimization scheme was investigated,and then the effects of the optimized RWU function on water and heat flux simulation were *** results indicate that the model simulation was not sensitive to W_x but was significantly impacted by W_*** the original model,soil humidity was somewhat underestimated for precipitation-free days;soil temperature was simulated with obvious interannual and seasonal differences and remarkable underestimations for the maize late-growth stage;and sensible and latent heat fluxes were overestimated and underestimated,respectively,for years with relatively less precipitation,and both were simulated with high accuracy for years with relatively more *** optimized RWU process resulted in a significant improvement of Co LM’s performance in simulating soil humidity,temperature,sensible heat,and latent heat,for dry *** conclusion,the optimized RWU scheme available for the Co LM model is applicable to the simulation of water and heat flux for maize farmland ecosystems in arid areas.

We introduce a transparent windshield-glass heater produced via transparent electrodes using silver nanowire （AgNW） networks for conventional use in the automobile industry. A high-quality conducting hybrid film is deposited on a plasma-treated glass substrate by spraying AgNWs, immersing the sprayed product in positively charged adhesive polymer solution, and then spraying negatively charged graphene oxide （GO） and a silane layer as an over-coating layer （OCL）.The results of heating tests conducted after adhesion tests show that the sheet resistance changes with the application of polymer glue. Surprisingly, the transmittance of the film with the GO OCL is higher than that of the film without the GO OCL. Heating and defrosting tests are carefully conducted via infrared （IR） monitoring. Adhesive-polymer-treated and GO-protected AgNW transparent glass heaters exhibit the best performance with low sheet resistance; thus, through strong electrostatic interaction among the substrate, adhesive layer, and OCL, our AgNW hybrid glass heater can reach the target temperature with a standard vehicle voltage of 12 V in a short period of time.

AIM： To compare the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography （CT） and positron emission tomography （PET） for the preoperative detection of paraaortic lymph node （PAN） metastasis in patients with intra- abdominal malignancies. METHODS： Sixty-six patients with intra-abdominal malignancies who underwent both CT and PET before lymphadenectomy were included in this study. Histopathologicaliy, 13 patients had metastatic PAN, while 53 had non-metastatic PAN. The CT criteria for metastasis were： short diameter ：）f 〉 8 mm, Iobular or irregular shape, and/or combined ancillary findings, including necrosis, conglomeration, vessel encasement, and infiltration. The PET criterion was positive fluorodeoxyglucose （FDG） uptake. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value （PPV）, negative predictive value （NPV）, and accuracy of both modalities were compared with the pathologic findings, and the false positive and false negative cases with both CT and PET were ***： The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of CT were 61.5%, 84.9%, 50%, 90% and 80.3%, respectively. For PET, the percentages were 46.2%, 100%, 100%, 88.3%, and 89.4%. Additionally, there were 8 false positive CT cases （8/53, 15.1%） and zero false positive PET cases. Of the 13 metastatic PANs, there were 5 false negative CT scans （38.5%） and 7 （53.9%） false negative PET ***： For detecting PAN metastasis, CT is more sensitive than PET, while PET is more specific.
