This review begins with a brief commentary on the diversity of placentation mechanisms, and then goes on to examine the extensive alterations which occur in the plasma membrane of uterine epithelial cells during early pregnancy across species. Ultrastructural, biochemical and more general morphological data reveal that strikingly common phenomena occur in this plasma membrane during early pregnancy despite the diversity of placental types-from epitheliochorial to hemochorial, which ultimately form in different species. To encapsulate the concept that common morphological and molecular alterations occur across species, that they are found basolaterally as well as apically, and that moreover they are an ongoing process during much of early pregnancy, not just an event at the time attachment, the term ’plasma membrane transformation’ is suggested which also emphasises that alterations in this plasma membrane during early pregnancy are key to uterine receptivity.

This paper describes an empirical study on an augmented virtuality (AV)-based system dedicated for tele-inspection of built environments. This system is regarded as a solution that allows users to experience the real remote built environment without the need of physically stepping into that actual place. Such experience is realized by using AV technology to enrich the virtual counterparts of the place with captured real images from the real space. Those integrated into the AV environment are real photos that represent key landmarks/features of the real place, live video streams of on-site crew, and 3D virtual design geome-tries. The focus of this paper is the implementation and evaluation of the AV system in its current state as compared with traditional photo-based methods. Results from this preliminary empirical study show that the AV system achieves good overall satisfaction, although it involves certain general usability issues.

The inherent noise in positron emission tomography (PET) leads to the instability of quantitative indicators, which may affect the diagnostic accuracy for differentiating malignant and benign lesions in the management of lung cancer. In this paper, the reliability of retention index (RI) is systematically investigated by using computer simulation for the dual-time-point imaging protocol. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is used to evaluate the optimal protocol. Results demonstrate that the reliability of RI is affected by several factors including noise level, lesion type, and imaging schedule. The RIs with small absolute values suffer from worse reliability than those larger ones. The results of ROC curves show that over delayed second scan cannot help to improve the diagnostic performance further, while an early first scan is expected. The method of optimization based on ROC analysis can be easily extended to comprise as many lesions as possible.

Aims:Wogonin is one of the major constituents of a traditional Chinese herb ***,which has been reported to inhibit cell growth and/or induce apoptosis in various cancer cell *** aim to investigate the anticancer effects and associated mechanisms of wogonin on human multiple myeloma cell line in *** methods:Effects of wogonin on the proliferation,cell cycle progression,and apoptosis of human myeloma cells were examined in *** proteins associated with the biological effects of wogonin were analyzed by immunoblotting and immunocytochemical *** findings:Myeloma cell growth was attenuated by wogonin(20-100μg/mL)in concentration-dependent *** was enhanced in wogonin-treated cells by cell cycle progression analysis and TUNEL *** apoptosis was accompanied by decreased level of total-PARP and significantly increased level of proapoptotic Bax *** activity was suppressed and phosphorylation of Ser 473 residue was decreased in the wogonin-treated ***:As wogonin was effective in vitro in promotion of apoptosis of myeloma cell by Akt-modulated,Bax related intrinsic apoptotic pathway,our findings suggest wogonin may be a potential therapeutic agent against multiple myeloma.
