Solid-state batteries that employ solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)to replace routine liquid electrolytes are considered to be one of the most promising solutions for achieving high-safety lithium metal batteries.SSEs with high mechanical modulus,thermal stability,and non-flammability can not only inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites but also enhance the safety of lithium metal batteries.However,several internal materials/electrodes-related thermal hazards demonstrated by recent works show that solid-state lithium metal batteries(SSLMBs)are not impenetrable.Therefore,understanding the potential thermal hazards of SSLMBs is critical for their more secure and widespread applications.In this contribution,we provide a comprehensive overview of the thermal failure mechanism of SSLMBs from materials to devices.Also,strategies to improve the thermal safety performance of SSLMBs are included from the view of material enhancement,battery design,and external management.Consequently,the future directions are further provided.We hope that this work can shed bright insights into the path of constructing energy storage devices with high energy density and safety.

Highly selective electrosynthesis of 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline accompanied with hydrogen production over three-dimensional hollow Coni-based microarray electrocatalysts

Electrocatalytic oxidation reaction of biomass-based derivatives is an excellent candidate to replace water oxidation for obtaining both value-added products and hydrogen(H_(2)),but the exploration of competent electrocatalysts is still highly challenging.Herein,two new types of three-dimensional self-supported hollow microarrays containing Coni layered double hydroxide(Coni-LDH)and N-doped carbon nanosheets decorated with Coni alloyed nanoparticles(Coni-NC)on carbon cloth(CC)are prepared,which are further used as efficient electrocatalysts for tetrahydroisoquinoline(THIQ)electrooxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),respectively.We demonstrate that the Co-modulated electronic environment for ni(II)/ni(Ⅲ)redox-looping in Coni-LDH is the main factor to boost the selectivity of 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline(DHIQ)for the indirect electrooxidation process of THIQ.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations reveal that the ni(Ⅲ)/Co(Ⅲ)dual sites of Coni-LDH exhibit enhanced adsorption for THIQ but poorer adsorption for DHIQ compared to pure Co(Ⅲ)or ni(Ⅲ).Therefore,the ni(Ⅲ)/Co(Ⅲ)dual sites can effectively inhibit the peroxidation of DHIQ to isoquinoline(IQ)over Coni-LDH,thus improving the selectivity of DHIQ to nearly 100%,much higher than that of its pure ni counterpart.Moreover,CC@Coni-NC can deliver high HER activity with low overpotential(40 mV@10 mA·cm^(-2))and high exchange current density(3.08 mA·cm^(-2)).Impressively,the assembled flow-cell device with CC@Coni-LDH anode and CC@Coni-NC cathode only requires low cell voltage and electricity consumption of 1.6 V and 3.50 kWh per cubic meter of H_(2)(@25 mA·cm^(-2)).

Clean air actions （CAAs） in China have been linked to considerable benefits in public health.However,whether the beneficial effects of CAAs are equally distributed geographically is unknown.Using high-resolution maps of the distributions of major air pollutants (fine particulate matter[PM2.5]and ozone[O3]) and population,we aimed to track spatiotemporal changes in health impacts from,and geographic inequality embedded in,the reduced exposures to PM2.5and O3from 2013 to 2020.We used a method established by the Global Burden of Diseases Study.By analyzing the changes in loss of life expectancy（LLE） attributable to PM2.5and O3,we calculated the gain of life expectancy （GLE） to quantify the health benefits of the air-quality improvement.Finally,we assessed the geographic inequality embedded in the GLE using the Gini index （GI）.Based on risk assessments of PM2.5and O3,during the first stage of CAAs（2013 to 2017）,the mean GLE was 1.87 months.Half of the sum of the GLE was disproportionally distributed in about one quarter of the population exposed （GI 0.44）.During the second stage of CAAs（2017 to 2020）,the mean GLE increased to 3.94 months and geographic inequality decreased （GI 0.18）.According to our assessments,CAAs were enhanced,from the first to second stages,in terms of not only preventing premature mortality but also ameliorating health inequalities.The enhancements were related to increased sensitivity to the health effects of air pollution and synergic control of PM2.5and O3levels.Our findings will contribute to optimizing future CAAs.

Perioperative complication incidence and risk factors for retroperitoneal neuroblastoma in children:analysis of 571 patients

Background Surgery plays an important role in the treatment of neuroblastoma.Perioperative complications may impact the course of neuroblastoma treatment.To date,comprehensive analyses of complications and risk factors have been lacking.Methods Patients with retroperitoneal neuroblastoma undergoing tumor resection were retrospectively analyzed between 2014 and 2021.The data collected included clinical characteristics,operative details,operative complications and postopera-tive outcomes.Risk factors for perioperative complications of retroperitoneal neuroblastoma were analyzed.Results A total of 571 patients were enrolled in this study.Perioperative complications were observed in 255(44.7%)patients.Lymphatic leakage(28.4%),diarrhea(13.5%),and injury(vascular,nerve and organ;7.5%)were the most frequent compli-cations.There were three operation-related deaths(0.53%):massive hemorrhage(n=1),biliary tract perforation(n=1)and intestinal necrosis(n=1).The presence of image-defined risk factors(IDRFs)[odds ratio(OR)=2.09,P<0.01],high stage of the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group staging system(INRGSS)(OR=0.454,P=0.04),retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis(OR=2.433,P=0.026),superior mesenteric artery encasement(OR=3.346,P=0.003),and inferior mesenteric artery encasement(OR=2.218,P=0.019)were identified as independent risk factors for perioperative complications.Conclusions Despite the high incidence of perioperative complications,the associated mortality rate was quite low.Perio-perative complications of retroperitoneal neuroblastoma were associated with IDRFs,INRGSS,retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis and vascular encasement.Patients with high-risk factors should receive more serious attention during surgery but should not discourage the determination to pursue total resection of neuroblastoma.

Tuning the surface electronic structure of noble metal aerogels to promote the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)is the bottleneck for various electrochemical energy conversion devices.Regulating the electronic structure of electrocatalysts by ligands has received particular attention in deriving valid ORR electrocatalysts.Here,the surface electronic structure of Ptbased noble metal aerogels(NMAs)was modulated by various organic ligands,among which the electron-withdrawing ligand of 4-methylphenylene effectively boosted the ORR electrocatalysis.Theoretical calculations suggested the smaller energy barrier for the transformation of O^(*) to OH^(*) and downshift the d-band center of Pt due to the interaction between 4-methylphenylene and the surface metals,thus enhancing the ORR intrinsic activity.Both Pt3ni and Pt Pd aerogels with 4-methylphenylene decoration performed significant enhancement in ORR activity and durability in different media.Remarkably,the 4-methylphenylene modified Pt Pd aerogel exhibited the higher halfwave potential of 0.952 V and the mass activity of 10.2 times of commercial Pt/C.This work explained the effect of electronic structure on ORR electrocatalytic properties and would promote functionalized NMAs as efficient ORR electrocatalysts.

Microstructure evolution of loess under multiple collapsibility based on nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy

In recent years, the acceleration of urbanization in loess areas has prompted frequent dismantling and reconstruction of old urban areas. Demolition and reconstruction of buildings involve multiple collapses of the foundation. To study microstructure evolution of loess under multiple collapsibility, this paper selects undisturbed loess samples from Guyuan, Northwest China for multiple compression tests. Using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) imaging and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) as auxiliary methods, a combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses was used to study the microstructure of loess samples before and after various number of collapses under different pressures. Results show that the loess does undergo multiple collapse under 200 kPa pressure. Pore is an important reason for loess collapse. The initial collapse comes primarily from the compression of macropores and mesopores, and the second collapse comes primarily from mesopore compression. The compression process of loess can be roughly divided into two stages. First, under the action of dissolution and compression, the relative displacement of soil particles occurs. Macropores and mesopores are destroyed first, generating small pores. Second, with increasing pressure and times of collapses, pore compression gradually transforms into small pore compression. During the first collapse, particle aggregates disintegrate due to water and pressure. However, with increasing times of collapses, the contact relationship between particles gradually changes from the point contact to face contact. Loess particles tend to gradually become rounded. The study of the microstructure provides the possibility to further reveal the mechanism of multiple collapsibility of loess.

Effect of freeze-thaw cycles on uniaxial mechanical properties of cohesive coarse-grained soils

Freeze-thaw cycles are closely related to the slope instability in high-altitude mountain regions. In this study, cohesive coarse-grained soils were collected from a high-altitude slope in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau to study the effect of cyclic freeze-thaw on their uniaxial mechanical properties. The soil specimens were remolded with three dry densities and three moisture contents. Then, after performing a series of freeze-thaw tests in a closed system without water supply, the soil specimens were subjected to a uniaxial compression test. The results showed that the stress-strain curves of the tested soils mainly performed as strain-softening. The softening feature intensified with the increasing dry density but weakened with an increase in freeze-thaw cycles and moisture content. The uniaxial compressive strength, resilient modulus, residual strength and softening modulus decreased considerably with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles. After more than nine freeze-thaw cycles, these four parameters tended to be stable. These parameters increased with the increase of dry density and decreased with the increasing moisture content, except for the residual strength which did not exhibit any clear variation with an increase in moisture content. The residual strength, however, generally increased with an increase in dry density. The soil structural damage caused by frozen water expansion during the freeze-thaw is the major cause for the changes in mechanical behaviors of cohesive coarse-grained soils. With results in this study, the deterioration effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the mechanical properties of soils should be considered during the slope stability analysis in high-altitude mountain regions.

Contrasting compositions of PM_(2.5)in Northern Thailand during La nina(2017)and El nino(2019)years

There have been a very limited number of systematic studies on PM_(2.5)compositions and their source contribution in Southeast Asia.This study aims to explore the characteristics of PM_(2.5)composition collected in Chiang Mai(Thailand)during La nina and El nino years and to apportion their sources during smoke haze and non-haze periods.The average PM_(2.5)concentration of smoke haze episode in 2019(El nino)was much higher than in 2017(La nina).The ratios of organic carbon(OC)to elemental carbon(EC),as well as K(biomass burning(BB)tracer)to PM_(2.5),were higher during smoke haze episodes in 2019 than in 2017 indicating a significant influence from BB.The ratios of secondary organic carbon(SOC)levels to primary organic carbon(POC)levels during smoke haze episodes were higher than those in non-haze period,which indicated greater SOC contributions or more photo-oxidation of precursors in haze episodes with high ambient temperatures.However,the ratios of soil markers(Ca and Mg)during non-haze period were high implying that soil source contributed more to PM_(2.5)concentrations when there less BB occurred.The positive Matrix Factorization(PMF)model revealed that the source of BB,characterized by high K fractions,was the largest contributor during smoke haze episodes accounting for 50%(2017)and 79%(2019).Climate conditions influence meteorological patterns,particularly during incidences of extreme weather such as droughts,which affect the scale and frequency of open burning and thus air pollution levels.

Highly efficient recovery of waste Lini_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z)O_(2) cathode materials using a process involving pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy

Substantial environmental and economic benefits can be achieved by recycling used lithium-ion batteries. Hydrometallurgy is often employed to recover waste Lini_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z)O_(2) cathode materials. As ni, Co and Mn are transition metals, they exhibit similar properties;therefore, separating them is difficult. Thus, most researchers have focused on leaching processes, while minimal attention has been devoted to the separation of valuable metals from waste Lini_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z)O_(2) cathode materials. Herein, we propose an environment-friendly, gentle process involving the usage of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy to gradually leach valuable metals and effectively separate them. Interestingly, Li is recovered through a reduction roasting and water leaching process using natural graphite powder, ni and Co are recovered through ammonia leaching and extraction processes and Mn is recovered through acid leaching and evaporation–crystallization processes. Results show that ~87% Li, 97.01% Co, 97.08% ni and 99% Mn can be leached using water, ammonia and acid leaching processes. The result obtained using the response surface methodology shows that the concentration of (NH4)2SO3 is a notable factor affecting the leaching of transition metals. Under optimal conditions, ~97.01% Co, 97.08% ni and 0.64% Mn can be leached out. The decomposition of Lini_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z)O_(2) is a two-step process. This study provides valuable insights to develop an environment-friendly, gentle leaching process for efficiently recycling valuable metals, which is vital for the lithium-ion battery recycling industry.
