Bird Habitats in Urban Environments: A Case from an Urban Landfill in and around Tayba Al Hasanab Landfill, Khartoum, Sudan

Managed open landfill sites can serve as crucial feeding grounds for birds. Studies have demonstrated that garbage dumps offer favorable feeding habitats for various trophic generalist species, including storks and scavenger raptors. This study aimed to assess bird diversity and abundance in and around Tayba Al Hasanab Landfill, Khartoum. A bird census was conducted using block counts in January 2021. A questionnaire complemented field observations, and interviews were conducted with landfill authorities and waste collectors to gather information on bird availability, numbers, and diversity. During the block counts, 23 bird species were recorded inside and around the landfill. These species directly relied on food resources available at and around the landfill, belonging to 8 orders and 11 families. The four most abundant species foraging at the landfill were Sparrow House (Passer domesticus) with 97 individuals, Black kite (Milvus migrans) with 67 individuals, cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) with 42 individuals, and Laughing Dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) with 36 individuals. This suggests that these species are the primary exploiters of food resources at the landfill. The results indicate that all species are considered least concerned except the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), which is classified as endangered. Most of the interviewed individuals reported seeing birds in the study area. The study recorded instances of dead birds, such as a white stork colliding and being electrocuted with a transition line observed at different sites along transmission lines near the landfill. Surveys around Tayba landfill need to be conducted to identify deadly power lines for replacement or implement possible mitigation measures on power lines running parallel and close to the Tayba landfills. Holocene variations of wildfire occurrence as a guide for sustainable management of the northeastern Canadian boreal forest

Background: Cumulative impacts of wildfires and forest harvesting can cause shifts from closed-crown forest to open woodland in boreal ecosystems. To lower the probability of occurrence of such catastrophic regime shifts,forest logging must decrease when fire frequency increases, so that the combined disturbance rate does not exceed the Holocene maximum. Knowing how climate warming will affect fire regimes is thus crucial to sustainably manage the forest. This study aimed to provide a guide to determine sustainable forest harvesting levels, by reconstructing the Holocene fire history at the northern limit of commercial forestry in Quebec using charcoal particles preserved in lake ***: Sediment cores were sampled from four lakes located close to the northern limit of commercial forestry in Quebec. The cores were sliced into consecutive 0.5 cm thick subsamples from which 1 cm3 was extracted to count and measure charcoal particles larger than 150 microns. Age-depth models were obtained for each core based on accelerator mass spectroscopy(AMS) radiocarbon dates. Holocene fire histories were reconstructed by combining charcoal counts and age-depth models to obtain charcoal accumulation rates and, after statistical treatment,long-term trends in fire occurrence(expressed as number of fires per 1000 years).Results: Fire occurrence varied between the four studied sites, but fires generally occurred more often during warm and dry periods of the Holocene, especially during the Holocene Thermal Maximum(7000–3500 cal. BP), when fire occurrence was twice as high as at ***: The current fire regime in the study area is still within the natural range of variability observed over the Holocene. However, climatic conditions comparable to the Holocene Thermal Maximum could be reached within the next few decades, thus substantially reducing the amount of wood available to the forest industry.

Statistical Relationship Between UVB(280-320nm) and Broadband Solar Radiation(295-2800nm) at a Subtropical Location(Qena,Egypt)

The present study quantifies the relationship between ultraviolet-B(UVB) and broadband solar radiation(G) at Qena,*** from 10-year hourly integrated totals for both UVB and G on a horizontal surface were used to determine the best fit between the two radiation *** the basis of the correlation of determination(r2),a second-order polynomial was determined to provide the best *** the purpose of developing an empirical model to estimate UVB,all of the cases of UVB and G from a nine-year study from 2001 to 2009 were *** and seasonal empirical models,as well as a general expression,were established for UVB as a function of *** values of r2 ranged from 0.90 to *** using a new dataset of G,the estimated and the corresponding measured values of UVB were determined to be in good agreement whereby the values of r2 between the two ranged from 0.91 to *** addition,the significance and performance of the regression forms were evaluated with the aid of several statistical analysis *** values of the index of modeling(d) and coefficient of modeling efficiency(ME) were close to ***,the values of RMSE,mean bias error(MBE),and mean absolute error(MAE) were lower than the experimental *** the basis of this analysis,it has been determined that the suggested regression forms can be used to estimate UVB when it difficult to obtain measurements or when measurements are available only for limited periods at the studied region.

Intestinal protozoa and intestinal helminthic infections among schoolchildren in Central Sudan

Objective:To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and soil-transmitted helminths(STHs) among primary schoolchildren in El dhayga,Central ***:In this cross-sectional study,three fresh faecal samples were collected from each child,which were examined by direct wet mount,brine flotation,formalin-ether and Kato-Katz *** intensity of each STH infection was expressed as the mean of eggs per gram counts of the three ***:In total,142(90.4%) of 157 children harboured at least one type of intestinal *** lumbricoides,Hymenolepis nana,Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were the most common parasites found,with prevalence rates of 32.5%,30.6%,33.1%and 19.7%,*** of these 157 children,29(18.5%) harboured more than two intestinal parasitic *** cases of Schistosoma mansoni or Enterobius vermicularis were identified. Conclusions:The study demonstrates significant burden of intestinal protozoa and STH infections in this part of Sudan and highlights the need for preventive and intervention measures.

OBJECTIVE:Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV)infection is still global health issue,and lack of vaccine furthers the devastating *** treatment regimen is challenged by the development of resistance,thus increase the mutation and dissemination of resistance genes across the *** work aims to assess the nature of HIV-1 subtypes and mutations from HIV-1 positive patients who are ***:The analysis of 103 new positive cases of HIV-1 involved in the ***-resistant mutations,HIV-1 subtypes and circulating recombinant forms(CRFs)were assessed as per World Health Organization(2009)list of monitoring drugresistant ***:The results revealed that subtype B was dominant 58(56.3%),compared to non-subtype B 34(33%)and CRF 11(10.7%).The occurrence of HIV-1 drug resistance for Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors(NRTIs),Non-nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors(NNRTIs),and Protease inhibitors(PIs)were 7.8%(8/103),22.3%(23/103)and 1%(1/103)respectively and the patients had the following primary antiretroviral drug resistance mutations to NRTI,3A62V(2.9%),2 M41L(1.9%),1 F77L(1%),1 K70KR(1%),and 1 T215S(1%).In the NNRTI,13 E138A(12.6%),3 E138G(2.9%),3 K103N(2.9%),2V179D(1.9),1 K103KN(1%)and 1K103T(1%)mutations were *** in the PI drug,1 L24LI(1%)drug resistance mutations were ***:Primary drug-resistant mutations in antiretroviral therapy(ART)naive subjects were found and the information in turn will contribute to the global data collection and treatment plan of HIV-1 patients.
