Effects of a Community-Based Intervention on the lifestyle and Health of People at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Benin

Introduction: Worldwide, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing at an epidemic rate. The objective of this study was to measure the effects on lifestyle intervention in subjects at risk of T2D in a West African country. Methods: This study involved Beninese adults at risk of T2D randomly selected from 2 groups of villages: control villages and villages exposed to nutrition education, cooking demonstrations and physical activity sessions. Anthropometric, clinical, and biological measurements were taken in both groups at the beginning and end of the intervention, which lasted 12 months. The paired sample t-test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on the lifestyle of people at risk of T2D. Results: After 12 months of exposure to nutrition education, cooking demonstrations and physical activity sessions in the intervention villages, the mean body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and amount of alcohol consumed per week had significantly decreased. Conversely, the mean intensity of physical activity and food consumption score had significantly increased. In the control group, 5.6% of the people at risk developed to diabetes. The relative risk was RR = 0.20 [0.14 - 0.56]. Conclusion: The intervention significantly improved metabolic indicators, intensity of leisure activity and dietary score. We suggest larger studies to better assess the effect of community-based interventions on the lifestyle and health of people at risk of T2D in Africa.

Disability to Admit as a Change of life after a Road Crash: Estimates and Related Factors in Benin for Prevention

Background: Disability is an underestimated issue in public health, with road crashes as leading cause. In Africa, motorcyclists disproportionately bear the burden of road crash injuries, including disability. To contribute to decision-making for disability prevention, this study aims to determine the prevalence and factors associated with disability at 12 months among motorcyclists involved in road crashes in Benin. Methods: This is a prospective, cross-sectional, analytical study based on 12-month follow-up data from a cohort of road crash victims set up in five hospitals in Benin. Data were collected from November 2020 to January 2021. Sample used for this analysis size was 297 motorcyclists. Disability was assessed using the Washington Group on Disabilities Statistics question set. logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for disability in victims 12 months after the crash. Results: The prevalence of disability was 12.5% 95% CI (9.2 - 16.7). Disability occurrence was associated with being over 45 years old (OR = 3.1;95% CI = 1.5 - 6.6), severity of initial injury (OR = 3.3;95% CI = 1.5 - 7.3) and hospitalisation of the victim (OR = 6.9;95% CI = 2.0 - 24). Conclusion: Age over 45 years, severity of initial injuries and hospitalisation of the victim were risk factors for the occurrence of disability among motorcyclists who were victims of road crashes in Benin. User awareness, law enforcement, holistic and early management of road crash victims could contribute to reducing the prevalence of disability among victims in Benin.

Modifiable Behavioral Risk Factors Associated with Biological Risk Factors in Subjects at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Benin: PREDIBE Study

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is a major public health problem worldwide. This study aimed at identifying modifiable behavioral risk factors associated with biological factors in people at risk of type 2 diabetes which could be targeted in the design and implementation of appropriate interventions to prevent the disease. Methods: 180 subjects at risk of type 2 diabetes (aged 15 - 60 years) were identified and selected at random during a preliminary survey conducted in two groups of villages in northeastern Benin. The study took part on August 2017. Questionnaires were administered to consenting subjects;anthropometric measurements taken and blood samples withdrawn. Blood samples were subjected to biochemical testing according to standard protocols. Results: Data was obtained from 180 subjects at risk of type 2 diabetes. The average age of the subjects was 42.76 ± 11.30 years. Multivariate analysis showed inadequate dietary intake score, low physical activity and tobacco use as behavioral factors significantly associated with high waist circumference, high blood sugar, low HDl cholesterol, high triglyceride levels and high body fat percentage. Conclusion: There is a possible association between biological and behavioral risk factors.

Performance Evaluation of a Communication Plan Implementation for Behaviour Change in People at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in the Commune of Tchaourou in Benin

Introduction: There are very few programmes to delay or prevent diabetes in Africa. This study aims to evaluate the communication plan implementation to reduce risk factors for Type 2 diabetes in people at risk. Methods: The cross-sectional evaluative study focuses on the resources used for the implementation of the programme, the activities carried out and the beneficiaries of the programme. The non-probabilistic method was used to select. All target populations under study with appropriate sampling techniques. The performance of the communication plan implementation for behaviour change was assessed through the three sub-variables of evaluation of Donabedian health programmes: structure, process and results. The components assessment was based on the Varkevisser scale. The performance of the communication plan implementation for behaviour change was obtained by the sum of the scores of the three sub-variables. Results: The performance of the communication plan implementation for behaviour change was satisfactory in all programme villages at 89%. The establishment of the research team, the management team and the technical team, the availability of financial resources on a timely basis, the follow-up of nutritionists, sports teachers and peer educators, the implementation of the programme package and the home coaching of the targets were effective in all the programme villages of the study. The scores for structure performance, process performance, and results performance were 100%, 95%, and 83.8%, respectively. The involvement of the entire research team, the commitment of local authorities and the motivation of the targets were also important in the obtained result. Conclusion: This study shows that effective T2D preventive communication is possible at community level in Benin and probably in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Relating to Food and Nutrition among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinics at Menontin Hospital (Benin)

Introduction: Pregnancy is a critical period during which environmental factors such as nutrition can affect the optimal development of the fetus. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices in food and nutrition among pregnant women in antenatal consultation at Menontin Hospital in 2021. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study including 96 pregnant women at Menontin Hospital in Cotonou. Variables including socio-anthropological data, level of knowledge of nutritional requirements and their consequences on malnutrition, and description of physical activity practices were collected using a questionnaire and data on pregnant women’s dietary practices, macronutrient consumption, and fruit and vegetable consumption were documented using a food frequency questionnaire. Results: The majority of pregnant women (88%) were unaware of their nutrient needs during pregnancy. Only 49.6% of them took at least three meals and two snacks a day, and 45% practiced less than 30 minutes of physical activity per day. The consumption of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids were respectively in the proportions of 36.5%, 50%, and 38.5%. It was also found that 48% of pregnant women did not consume fruits and vegetables daily. Conclusion: The pregnant women followed in the Mènontin area hospital had a low level of knowledge in terms of food and nutrition during pregnancy. Consequently, their attitudes and practices were unfavorable to good nutrition for both the mother and the child.

Prominent cycling reversibility and kinetics enabled by CaTiO3 protective layer on Zn metal for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries （AZIBs） have received considerable attention owing to their various advantages such as safety,low cost,simple battery assembly conditions,and high ionic ***,they still suffer from serious problems,including uncontrollable dendrite growth,corrosion,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） from water decomposition,electrode passivation,and unexpected *** creation of a uniform artificial nanocrystal layer on the Zn anode surface is a promising strategy for resolving these ***,we propose the use of a perovskite CaTiO3（CTO） protective layer on Zn（CTO@Zn） as a promising approach for improving the performance of *** CTO artificial layer provides an efficient pathway for Zn ion diffusion towards the Zn metal because of the high dielectric constant （εr=180） and ferroelectric characteristics that enable the alignment of dipole moments and redistribute the Zn2+ions in the CTO *** avoiding the direct contact of the Zn anode with the electrolyte solution,the uneven dendrite growth,corrosion,parasitic side reactions,and HER are mitigated,while CTO retains its mechanical and chemical robustness during ***,CTO@Zn demonstrates an improved lifespan in a symmetric cell configuration compared with bare ***@Zn shows steady overpotential （～68 m V） for 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2,excelling bare ***,when paired with the V2O5-C cathode,the CTO@Zn//V2O5-C full battery delivers 148.4 mA h g-1（based on the mass of the cathode） after 300 *** study provides new insights into Zn metal anodes and the development of high-performance AZIBs.

Cerebral ischemia is a major health risk that requires preventive approaches in addition to drug *** exercise enhances neurogenesis and synaptogenesis,and has been widely used for functional rehabilitation after *** this study,we determined whether exercise training before disease onset can alleviate the severity of cerebral *** also examined the role of exercise-induced circulating factors in these *** mice were subjected to 14 days of treadmill exercise training before surgery for middle cerebral artery *** found that this exercise pre-conditioning strategy effectively attenuated brain infarct area,inhibited gliogenesis,protected synaptic proteins,and improved novel object and spatial memory *** analysis showed that circulating adiponectin plays a critical role in these preventive effects of *** activation of adiponectin receptors by Adipo Ron mimicked the effects of exercise,while inhibiting receptor activation abolished the exercise *** summary,our results suggest a crucial role of circulating adiponectin in the effects of exercise pre-conditioning in protecting against cerebral ischemia and supporting the health benefits of exercise.

Mitochondrial function is fundamental to neuroregeneration,particularly in neurons,where high energy demands are essential for repair and recovery(Patrón and Zinsmaier,2016;Beckervordersandforth et al.,2017;Iwata et al.,2023).Mitochondrial dysfunction,characterized by an imbalance in ATP levels and excessive production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species,is a key factor that impedes neural regeneration in neurodegenerative diseases and after neuronal injury(Han et al.,2016,2020;Zheng et al.,2016;Zong et al.,2024).
