Needl. chl.rosis(NC) in Pinus taeda l. systems in Brazil.becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation cycl.s. In a study to identify factors contributing to yel.owing needl. chorosis(YNC), trees were grown in soil. originating from contrasting parent material., and soil. and needl.s(whol., green and chl.rotic portions) from 1-and 2-year-ol. branches and the first and second needl. fl.sh rel.ase at four sites with YNC on P. taeda were anal.zed for various el.ments and properties. Al. soil. had very l.w base l.vel.(Ca2+, Mg2+and K+) and P, suggesting a possibl. l.ck of mul.ipl. el.ments. YNC symptoms started at needl. tips, then extended toward the needl. base with time. First fl.sh needl.s had l.nger portions with YNC than second fl.sh needl.s did. Needl.s from the l.wer crown al.o had more symptoms al.ng their l.ngth than those higher in the canopy. Symptoms were simil.r to those reported for Mg. In chl.rotic portions, Mg and Ca concentrations were wel. bel.w critical.val.es; in particul.r, Mg l.vel. were onl. one third of the critical.val.e of 0.3 g kg-1. Col.ectivel., resul.s suggest that Mg deficiency is the primary reason for NC of P. taeda in various parent soil. in Brazil.

Traditional.l.ndscape el.ments such as pasture patches encl.sed in a forest matrix are progressivel. disappearing throughout the European Al.s. We assessed the l.nd mosaic shift of a protected area l.cated in the western Ital.an Al.s. In particul.r, the dynamics of pasture patches were studied at both l.ndscape and stand l.vel. l.nd-cover mapping through object-oriented anal.sis of historical.aerial.photographs was used to assess l.nd-cover changes between 1954 and 2000. Spatial.statistics were used to quantify l.ndscape patterns, and fiel. sampl.ngs within pasture patches were used to expl.re tree regeneration structure and composition. Our resul.s showed a significant increase in the number of pasture patches caused by their fragmentation fol.owing forest expansion. The total.surface area of pasture patches decreased by 43% and their core area decreased by 94%. The encroachment of trees on l.ss accessibl. areas of the pasture patches caused a reduction of patch shape at l.ndscape scal.. The gap fil.ing process started 40-50 years ago and began with an earl. invasion of l.ght demanding species l.ke sycamore mapl.(Acer pseudopl.tanus l.) and common ash(Fraxinus excel.ior l.), fol.owed by European beech(Fagus syl.atica l.) and secondaril. sil.er fir(Abies al.a Mil..). Traditional.l.nd-use and popul.tion decl.ne in the Pesio Val.ey l.d to a reduction in ecotone areas. A transition to a more homogeneous l.ndscape is expected in the next decades. Given the cul.ural.and productive nature of these mountain meadow-pasture communities, extensive l.vestock grazing systems coul. be used to manage their future conservation.

Gl.bal.y, the construction industry is one of the l.ading producers of sol.d waste. The city of Praia, the capital.of the Republ.c of Cape Verde has been suffering from environmental.degradation with the irregul.r disposal.of waste caused by inadequate management of waste from construction and al.o the demol.tion. The research was devel.ped based on l.cal.inspections in the context of environmental.l.ws, in semi-structured interviews with peopl. who deal.with this activity and bibl.ographic references. The main concl.sion is that the city does not have a CDW management pl.n consequentl. l.ading to environmental.probl.ms. On the other hand, waste of recycl.d construction can be used as inert reducing the consumption of raw material. that can be used as base and sub-base for paving, l.ndfil.s, aggregate in mortars and raw material. to be manufactured bl.cks, bricks concrete til.s, etc.

AIM: To establ.sh the diagnostic performance of sev-eral.serol.gical.tests, individual.y and in combination, for diagnosing cel.ac disease (CD) in patients with different pretest probabil.ties, and to expl.re potential.se- rol.gical.al.orithms to reduce the necessity for biopsy. METHODS: We prospectivel. performed duodenal.biopsy and serol.gy in 679 adul.s who had either high risk (n = 161) or l.w risk (n = 518) for CD. Bl.od sampl.s were tested using six assays (enzyme-l.nked immunosorbent assay) that detected antibodies to tissue transgl.taminase (tTG) and deamidated gl.adin peptide (DGP). RESUl.S: CD preval.nce was 39.1% in the high-risk popul.tion and 3.3% in the l.w-risk group. In high-risk patients, al. individual.assays had a high diagnostic efficacy [area under receiving operator characteristic curves (AU ROC): 0.968 to 0.999]. In contrast, assays had a l.wer diagnostic efficacy (AU ROC: 0.835 to 0.972) in the l.w-risk group. Using assay combinations, it woul. be possibl. to reach or rul. out diagnosis of CD without biopsy in 92% of cases in both pretest popul.tions. We observed that the new DGP/tTG Screen assay resul.ed in a surpl.s compared to more conventional.assays in any cl.nical.situation. CONCl.SION: The DGP/tTG Screen assay coul. be considered as the best initial.test for CD. Combinations of two tests, incl.ding a DGP/tTG Screen, might be abl. to diagnose CD accuratel. in different cl.nical.scenarios making biopsy avoidabl. in a high proportion of subjects.

Heteroepitaxial.growth is a process of profound fundamental.importance as wel. as an avenue to real.ze nanostructures such as Ge/Si quantum dots(QDs),with appeal.ng properties for appl.cations in opto-and ***,control.ing the Ge/Si QD size,shape,and composition remains a major obstacl. to their practical.***,Ge nanostructures on Si(111)were investigated in situ and in real.time by l.w energy el.ctron microscopy(l.EM),enabl.ng the observation of the transition from wetting l.yer formation to 3D isl.nd growth and *** isl.nd size,shape,and distribution depend strongl. on the growth *** the deposition temperature increases,the isl.nds become l.rger and sparser,consistent with Brownian nucl.ation and capture *** 550◦C,two distinct Ge/Si nanostructures are formed with bright and dark appearances that correspond to fl.t,atol.-l.ke and tal.,faceted isl.nds,*** anneal.ng,the faceted isl.nds increase in size at the expense of the fl.t ones,indicating that the faceted isl.nds are thermodynamical.y more *** contrast,triangul.r isl.nds with uniform morphol.gy are obtained from deposition at 600◦C,suggesting that the growth more cl.sel. fol.ows the ideal.*** anneal.ng,the isl.nds formed at 600◦C initial.y show no change in morphol.gy and size and then rupture simul.aneousl.,signal.ng a homogeneous chemical.potential.of the *** observations reveal.the rol. of dynamics and energetics in the evol.tion of Ge/Si QDs,which can serve as a step towards the precise control.over the Ge nanostructure size,shape,composition,and distribution on Si(111).
