Antifungal Activity of Compounds Isolated from Bamboo Vermicompost against <i>Rhizoctonia solani</i>AG1-IB

Vermicompost has become a promising alternative to chemical pesticide because of its disease suppression effect during these decades. However, the mechanisms by which vermicompost suppress plant disease are not well-understood. Antifungal compounds, which are released by beneficial organisms in the vermicompost, may play an important role in inhibiting plant pathogens;however, these mechanisms have not been widely examined. In this study, Sterilized Water Extracts of bamboo vermicompost (SWE), using a 0.22-μm cellulose acetate filter, significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited the mycelium growth of Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IB on a Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) plate. This suggests that antifungal compounds are present in bamboo vermicompost. The ethanol acetate (EtOAc) crude extracts of bamboo vermicompost showing antifungal activity were further separated. Two compounds were isolated from the EtOAc fraction of bamboo vermicompost and characterized as ergosterol peroxide (1) and (22E, 24R)-5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,9(11),22-trien-3β-ol (2). Their chemical structures and mass spectra were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry analyses. Ergosterol peroxide tested at 150, 300, 600, and 900 μg showed 13%, 22%, 34%, and 53% mycelial growth inhibition against R. solani AG1-IB, respectively. Because EtOAc crude extracts of the initial substrate materials of bamboo vermicompost did not inhibit mycelium growth of R. solani AG1-IB, antifungal compounds in the vermicompost may be released by microbes but not from the original substrates during vermicomposting.

Realizing the full potential of ultrahigh-intensity lasers for particle and radiation generation will require multi-beam arrangements due to technology ***,we investigate how to optimize their coupling with solid ***,we show that overlapping two intense lasers in a mirror-like configuration onto a solid with a large preplasma can greatly improve the generation of hot electrons at the target front and ion acceleration at the target *** underlying mechanisms are analyzed through multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations,revealing that the self-induced magnetic fields driven by the two laser beams at the target front are susceptible to reconnection,which is one possible mechanism to boost electron *** addition,the resistive magnetic field generated during the transport of the hot electrons in the target bulk tends to improve their *** simulations also indicate that such effects can be further enhanced by overlapping more than two laser beams.

We report on an experiment performed at the FLASH2 free-electron laser(FEL)aimed at producing warm dense matter via soft x-ray isochoric *** the experiment,we focus on study of the ions emitted during the soft x-ray ablation process using time-of-flight electron multipliers and a shifted Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution *** find that most emitted ions are thermal,but that some impurities chemisorbed on the target surface,such as protons,are accelerated by the electrostatic field created in the plasma by escaped *** morphology of the complex crater structure indicates the presence of several ion groups with varying *** find that the ion sound velocity is controlled by the ion temperature and show how the ion yield depends on the FEL radiation attenuation length in different materials.

Space-charge effect on photogenerated-current and-voltage inⅢ-nitride optoelectronic semiconductors

In this study,we attempted to elucidate the carrier dynamics behind the abnormal characteristics of photogenerated current and voltage(IPhand VPh)at cryogenic temperature inⅢ-nitride optoelectronic semiconductors by employing space-charge *** this end,we carefully investigated and analyzed excitation-powerdependentⅠ-Ⅴ(PDIV)curves operated by quasiresonant excitation of an Al Ga In N-based p-i-n junction semiconductor at 300 K and 15 *** 300 K,the curves exhibited typical characteristics and were well described by the conventional ***,the PDIV curves at 15 K could no longer be described by the conventional *** elucidate the mechanism behind this phenomenon,we proposed a model in which the space-charge effect(SCE)plays a key *** on this model,we proposed the modified Shockley diode equation,which can explain the PDIV characteristic at 15 K,including the *** also discussed the SCE on the efficiency of devices.

What is artificial endocrine pancreas? Mechanism and history

The artificial endocrine pancreas is a feedback control instrument that regulates insulin delivery on a minute-by-minute basis according to measured blood glucose levels. Only one type of bedsidetype artificial endocrine pancreas is now available in Japan: STG-22 (Nikkiso Co. Ltd., Japan). In the insulin infusion algorithm, insulin is infused on the basis ofits proportional and derivative actions, to blood glucose concentrations with a constant time delay. The bedside-type artificial endocrine pancreas has been proven to be useful not only as a therapeutic tool for diabetes mellitus, but also as an elegant research tool for investigating the pathophysiology of the disease, by using the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp technique. The wearable type of closed-loop system has been developed recently. The breakthrough is the establishment of a needle-type glucose sensor. The development of closed-loop glycemic control systems that enable long-term physiological regulation has focused on implantable devices. Much effort has been expended to realize these devices.

Analysis of the Abnormal Segregation of Pathogenicity in Magnaporthe grisea by Using a Genetic Cross of Oryza and Eleusine Isolates

A genetic cross between Oryza isolate Y93-164a-1 and Eleusine isolate SA98-4 was established, and the pathogenicity of 151 F1 progeny isolates was investigated on both host plants rice and finger millet. Results showed that the segregation of pathogenicity in this genetic cross was abnormal, i.e., most of the progeny isolates were nonpathogenic on both host plants. However, no abnormal segregation was observed when middle repetitive sequence MGR586 and 31 single-copy RFLP markers from all of the chromosomes were genetically analyzed. At the same time, comparison of the chromosomal organization among two pairs of parental isolates did not find any genomic abnormity. These results suggested that the ＂abnormal＂ inheritance of pathogenicity in this cross was most likely due to the reassortment of numerous host species specificity genes but not the biased segregation of the host species specificity genes. The host species specificities in M. grisea were likely to be multigenically controlled, at least in the genetic cross involving rice pathogen and the grasses pathogen other than rice.

Specific endoscopic features of ulcerative colitis complicated by cytomegalovirus infection

AIM:To identify specific colonoscopic findings in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) complicated by cyto-megalovirus (CMV) ***: Among UC patients who were hospitalized due to exacerbation of symptoms, colonoscopic findings were compared between 15 CMV-positive patients and 58 CMV-negative patients. CMV infection was determined by blood test for CMV antigenemia. Five aspects of mucosal changes were analyzed (loss of vascular pattern, erythema, mucosal edema, easy bleeding, and mucinous exudates) as well as five aspects of ulcerative change (wide mucosal defect, punched-out ulceration, longitudinal ulceration, irregular ulceration, and cobble-stone-like appearance). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of each finding for CMV positivity were ***: The sensitivity of irregular ulceration for positive CMV was 100%. The specificity of wide mucosal defect was 95%. Punched-out ulceration and lon-gitudinal ulceration exhibited relatively high sensitivity and specificity (more than 70% for each).CONCLUSION:Specific colonoscopic findings in patients with UC complicated by CMV infection were identified. These findings may facilitate the early diagnosis of CMV infection in UC patients.

Prediction of flare-ups of ulcerative colitis using quantitative immunochemical fecal occult blood test

AIM:To examine the feasibility of predicting the flareup of ulcerative colitis (UC) before symptoms emerge using the immunochemical fecal occult blood test (IFOBT).METHODS:We prospectively measured fecal hemoglobin concentrations in 78 UC patients using the I-FOBT every 1 or 2 ***:During a 20 mo-period,823 fecal samples from 78 patients were *** median concentration of fecal hemoglobin was 41 ng/mL (range:0-392 500 ng/mL).There were three types of patients with regard to the correlation between I-FOBT and patient symptoms;the synchronous transition type with symptoms (44 patients),the unrelated type withsymptoms (19 patients),and the flare-up predictive type (15 patients).In patients with the flare-up predictive type,the values of I-FOBT were generally low during the study period with stable *** to four weeks before the flare-up of symptoms,the I-FOBT values were ***,in these patients,I-FOBT could predict the flare-up before symptoms ***:Flare-up could be predicted by I-FOBT in approximately 20% of UC *** results warrant periodical I-FOBT in UC patients.

Fluorescent SiC and its application to white light-emitting diodes

Fluorescent-SiC （f-SiC）, which contains donor and acceptor impurities with optimum concentrations, has high conversion efficiency from NUV to visible light caused by donor-acceptor-pair （DAP） recombination. This material can be used as a substrate for a near UVlight-emitting diode （LED） stack, and leads to monolithic white LED device with suitable spectral property for general lighting applications. In this paper, we describe basic technologies of the white LED, such as optical properties of f-SiC substrate, and epitaxial growth of NUV stack on the f-SiC substrate.

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to metachronous ovarian metastases from transverse colon cancer

Pseudo-Meigs’ syndrome associated with colorectal cancer is extremely rare. We report here a case of pseudo-Meigs’ syndrome secondary to metachronous ovarian metastases from colon cancer. A 65-year-old female with a history of surgery for transverse colon cancer and peritoneal dissemination suffered from metachronous ovarian metastases during treatment with systemic chemotherapy. At first, neither ascites nor pleural effusion was observed, but she later complained of progressive abdominal distention and dyspnea caused by rapidly increasing ascites and pleural effusion and rapidly enlarging ovarian metastases. Abdominocenteses were repeated, and cytological examinations of the fluids were all negative for malignant cells. We suspected pseudo-Meigs’ syndrome, and bilateral oophorectomies were performed after thorough informed consent. The patient’s postoperative condition improved rapidly after surgery. We conclude that pseudo-Meigs’ syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis of massive or rapidly increasing ascites and pleural effusion associated with large or rapidly enlarging ovarian tumors.
