A novel isoflavone–chromone flavonoid C–O–C dimmer,brevipedicelone D(1),along with one new C–O–C biflavonoid derivative,brevipedicelone E(2),were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves of Garcinia brevipedicellata,a medicinal plant used in folk medicine in parts of *** structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques,including 1D-and 2D-NMR,MS experiments,as well as comparing their spectral data with those of known ***-onchocercal screening of 1 showed moderate inhibition of adult worm motility of Onchocerca ochengi by 60%at the highest concentration(20 μg/mL)and inhibited motility of both the juvenile worms of *** and Loa loa by 90%at this same concentration.

Introduction: Chemotherapy is used to combat tuberculosis, and other microbial infections. Unfortunately, resistance has been reported to a vast majority of currently use drugs. The objective of this study was to search for new therapies from plant products for the sustainable management of tuberculosis and S. aureus infections. Materials and Methods: Crude extracts were obtained by sequential maceration of dry powdered plant material in three solvents;hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. Phytochemical screening to identify active constituents in the crude extracts was done by conventional methods. The antimycobacterial and antimicrobial activity on M. tuberculosis control strain H37Ra and a clinical isolate of S. aureus respectively, was evaluated at eight different concentrations using the microplatealamar blue assay. Cytotoxicity of the active extracts was evaluated on monkey kidney epithelial cells and assessed using the MTT/formazan assay. Predictors of Herbal Medicine Use amongst Adults with Type 2 Diabetes in an Urban Setting in Cameroon

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is currently a major global public health burden associated with elevated blood glucose. The use of herbal medicine in the management of type 2 diabetes is currently on the rise both in developed and developing countries. This study sets out to determine the prevalence of herbal medicine use and to identify the factors associated with herbal medicine use amongst type 2 diabetes patients. Methods: A community based cross-sectional study involves 123 adults living with type 2 diabetes (90 males and 30 females), mean age 58.7 ± 9.5 years in the Bamenda III health district of the North West Region of Cameroon. Data on the different types of herbs used, frequency and mode of herbal medicine use as well as reasons for using herbal medicines in the management of T2DM were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Anthropometric and diabetes related measurements were carried out following standard procedures. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent predictors of herbal medicine use. Results: The prevalence of herbal medicine use was 24.4% (n = 30) amongst which 37.4 % used both herbs and orthodox medicine. A higher proportion of diabetic males used herbal medicines compared to females and this difference was significant (X2 = 5.243, p X2 = 10.75, p = 0.005). The most commonly used herbs were Vernonia amygdalina leaves (19.10%), Aloe vera (13.48%), Mangifera indica leaves (11.24%) including its bark and Carica papaya leaves (8.99%). Bivariate analysis indicated that being male (OR 2.8, 95% CI, 1.14 -6.79) and having attained secondary/tertiary education (OR 13.2, 95% CI, 1.6 - 29.9) were significantly (p 0.05) associated with herbal medicine use. Multivariate analysis revealed that having attained secondary /tertiary education (OR 10.5, 95% CI, 1.30 - 35.23) was an independent predictor of herbal medicine use in the study population. The novel ligand, 1-(phthalazin-1(2H)-one)[(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]hydrazone,(APN), derived from the antihypertensive drug, hydralazine hydrochloride, was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR, 1H NMR). The X-ray crystallographic data indicates that APN has an exocyclic C=N bond on the hydralazine moiety. APN revealed significant anti-onchocercal activity with IC50 values of 0.3125 μg/mL on microfilaria and 10 μg/mL on adult worms compared to the standard drug, ivermectin.

Background: Gender-based violence is violence against men and women in which the woman is more likely to be the victim. Globally, one in every four women is physically or sexually abused during pregnancy. The main objective was to study gender-based violence among pregnant women attending antenatal care at the Bamenda Regional Hospital (BRH). Methods: We carried out a hospital-based cross-sectional study among 231 pregnant women at the antenatal care unit of the BRH from January to March 2018. The study included all women who gave a written informed consent. A questionnaire adapted from the WHO multi-country study was used to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, aspects of gender-based violence (GBV), and data for other associated factors were collected by face-to-face interview. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used to compare frequencies. Student t-test was used to compare means. Binary logistic regression analysis and multivariate analysis were used to eliminate confounders. The level of statistical significance was set at p Results: A total of 56.3% (n = 130) of pregnant women involved in the study were found to be survivors of GBV. Psychological trauma, physical assault and sexual violence were found in 47.2%, 30.2% and 19.9% respectively. Depression and anxiety were the most frequent clinical manifestation

Chinese Assam tea(Camellia sinensis ***)is an important tea crop with a long history of cultivation in Yunnan,*** its potential value as a genetic resource,its genetic diversity and domestication/breeding history remain *** address this issue,we genotyped 469 ancient tea plant trees representing 26 *** *** populations,plus two of its wild relatives(six and three populations of *** and ***,respectively)using 16 nuclear microsatellite *** showed that Chinese Assam tea has a relatively high,but comparatively lower gene diversity(H_(S)=0.638)than the wild relative ***(H_S=0.658).Clustering in STRUCTURE indicated that Chinese Assam tea and its two wild relatives formed distinct genetic groups,with considerable interspecific *** Chinese Assam tea accessions clustered into three gene pools,corresponding well with their geographic ***,New Hybrids analysis indicated that 68.48%of ancient Chinese Assam tea plants from Xishuangbanna were genetic intermediates between the Puer and Lincang gene *** addition,10%of the ancient Chinese Assam tea individuals were found to be hybrids between Chinese Assam tea and *** results suggest that Chinese Assam tea was domesticated separately in three gene pools(Puer,Lincang and Xishuangbanna)in the Mekong River valley and that the hybrids were subsequently selected during the domestication *** the domestication history of Chinese Assam tea in southwestern Yunnan remains complex,our results will help to identify valuable genetic resources that may be useful in future tea breeding programs.

The concepts of connectedness play a critical role in digital picture segmentation and analyses. However, the crisp nature of set theory imposes hard boundaries that restrict the extension of the underlying topological notions and results. Whilst fuzzy set theory was introduced to address this inherent drawback, most human processes are not just fuzzy but also double-sided. Most phenomena will exhibit both a positive side and a negative side. Therefore, it is not enough to have a theory that addresses imprecision, uncertainty and ambiguity;rather, the theory must also be able to model polarity. Hence the study of bipolar fuzzy theory is of potential significance in an attempt to model real-life phenomena. This paper extends some concepts of fuzzy digital topology to bipolar fuzzy subsets including some important basic properties such as connectedness and surroundedness.
