Kinetic study of all-or-none hemolysis induced by cationic amphiphilic polymethacrylates with antimicrobial activity

To gain an understanding of the toxicity of antimicrobial polymers to human cells, their hemolytic action was investigated using human red blood cells （RBCs）. We examined the hemolysis induced by cationic amphiphilic methacrylate random copolymers, which have amino ethyl sidechains as cationic units and either butyl or methyl methacpjlate as hydrophobic units. The polymer with 30 tool% butyl sidechains （B3o） displayed higher hemolytic toxicity than the polymer with 59 tool% methyl sidechains （Ms9）. B3o also induced faster release of hemoglobin from RBCs than lVlsg. A new theoretical model is proposed based on two consecutive steps to form active polymer species on the RBC membranes, which are associated to RBC lysis. This model takes the all-or-none release of hemoglobin by the rupture of RBCs into account, providing new insight into the polymer-induced hemolysis regarding how individual or collective ceils respond to the polymers.

The aim of the present research was to establish a case study for the prediction of the unknown EDZ(Excavation Damaged Zone)distribution using a numerical analysis calibrated by replicating the trends in the EDZ observed from one of the representative underground research fields in Japan(Horonobe URL).In this study,a 2D numerical analysis using a damage model,which can determine rock deformation and fracturing simultaneously,is *** was calibrated to reproduce the excavation of the gallery at the Horonobe URL at a depth of 350 *** results show an excellent agreement with the extent of the measured EDZ and capture the failure modes of EDZ fractures suggested by the in-situ ***,the calibrated numerical analysis was used to realistically estimate the EDZ formation for the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste(HLW)under the same environment as that of the above-mentioned galley at the Horonobe ***,it was shown that the tensile/shear hybrid fractures dominantly constituted the EDZ and propagated to a maximum extent of about 0.3 m from the cavity wall during the cavity excavation for the HLW ***,the calibrated numerical analysis and resulting estimations,targeted for the environment at the depth of 350 m at the Horonobe URL,where mudstone is located,should be useful for predicting the trends in the EDZ distribution expected in the implementation of HLW disposal projects under deep geological conditions,such as those that exist in Japan,which are dominated by sedimentary rocks,including mudstone。

Flow-through experiments were conducted with three permeants to determine the effect of pH,temperature,and cation concentrations on changes in *** with a single fracture was used for each *** in the permeant concentrations due to pressure dissolution,free-face dissolution,and precipitation were identified by measuring the element concentrations before and after the *** addition,the mineral transformation was analyzed by *** results of the flow-through experiments showed a reduction in permeability in almost all the *** decrease in permeability may have been caused by the interaction between pressure dissolution and free-face dissolution,which occurred in the high pH water experiment,or between pressure dissolution and precipitation,which occurred in the saturated mineral water and simulated seawater *** pressure dissolution and free-face dissolution occurred in the samples,the pH and temperature were seen to greatly affect the decrease in permeability,namely,the permeability decreased significantly with increasing pH and *** remarkable decrease in permeability could have taken place because the dissolution rate constant of the mineral increased with the increasing pH and ***,when pressure dissolution and precipitation occurred in the samples,the cation concentrations and temperature were seen to greatly affect the changes in permeability,namely,the permeability decreased significantly with increasing cation concentrations and decreasing temperature.

Investigation on possible induction of adaptive response(AR)by high-liner energy transfer(LET)particle radiation for protection against low-LET photon radiation-induced detrimental effects has not yet been performed in *** study verified if an AR could be induced by high-LET particle radiation from accelerated heavy ions against low-LET X-ray radiation-induced detrimental effects on fetal *** body irradiation of pregnant C57BL/6J mice were performed by delivering a priming dose ranging from 10 mGy to 320 mGy of particle radiation on gestation day 11 followed one day later by a challenge dose at 3500 mGy from X-ray *** monoenergetic beams of carbon,silicon and iron with the LET values of about 15,55,and 200 KeV/μm,respectively,were *** suppression by the priming radiation of the detrimental effects(fetal death,malformation,or low body weight)was used as the endpoints for judgment of a successful AR induction on gestation day *** of AR was not *** the other hand,the priming dose of high-LET particle radiation,in some cases,even increased the detrimental effects induced by the challenge dose from low-LET X-ray *** existence of AR induced by high-LET radiation in cultured mammalian cells in vitro and in certain tissues of laboratory mice in vivo was demonstrated,the present study did not suggest that low dose of high-LET particle radiation could induce an AR in fetal mice in utero under the setup of our experimental system.

Lengthening periods of hospitalization, increasing numbers of patients with age-related complications, and a shortage of nursing staff have been of great concern in medical psychiatry in Japan. Under these circumstances, countries such as Japan that face a super-aging society and a decline in the working-age population, have been recommended for use of advanced information and communications technology (ICT) to improve the efficiency of medical treatment and care. This study aims to develop the “Monitoring Application for Inappropriate Expressions in Nursing Records” for using PsyNACS©, which will enable psychiatric nursing plans to harness the advantages of ICT. The functions considered necessary are as follows: 1) identification of users who enter information;2) a necessary database for lists of inappropriate expressions;3) development of a matching function to recommend proper writing input and a warning function;and 4) a management function for an inappropriate expression list database. A demonstration experiment for developing the application in this study was conducted at a specialized psychiatric hospital. To introduce them to the application, nurses and nurse managers were informed about the system developed in this study, and a survey regarding their opinions on the functions of the application was conducted with ten nurse managers. The results were evaluated in terms of usefulness for nursing care, documentation, and the education of nurses from an ethical perspective. This study suggests that matching their input with an inappropriate expression database will allow nurses to record more appropriate expressions. From an ethical perspective, the ability to use appropriate expressions makes records more likely to withstand disclosure requests from patients and their families.

Synchronous coexistence of liver metastases from cecal leiomyosarcoma and rectal adenocarcinoma: A case report

Multiple liver tumors represent a challenging condition for abdominal surgeons both in the selection of technique and the rarity of diagnosis. There are no case reports on co-existence of liver metastases from both intestinal leiomyosarcoma and adenocarcinoma. The patient described in this report successfully underwent resection of both primary lesions and liver metastases in combination with chemotherapy. As for the leiomyosarcoma, the primary cecal lesion was revealed more than three years after the patient's first visit. Peritoneal, lymph-node, and lung recurrences were observed afterward, and thus surgeries on those regions were performed. Pathologically, the peritoneal and lung recurrences comprised leiomyosarcoma and the lymphnode recurrence was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Despite newly discovered multiple lung recurrences and regional lymph-node metastases, the patient lived a normal life for 73 mo after the initial operation based on multidisciplinary therapy. He ultimately died of liver failure due to invasive lymph-node recurrence from the rectal adenocarcinoma, in addition to multiple lung recurrences from the leiomyosarcoma. Hepatic recurrence did not occur in this patient's case, which appears to be one reason for his long-term survival.

Potential Legal Issues and Care Implications during Care-Prevention Gymnastic Exercises for the Elderly Using Pepper in Long Term Health Care Facilities

In Japan, the shortage of personnel is a problem in long-term care nursing and rehabilitative care prevention. Nevertheless, Japan has taken measures to compensate for these shortages by promoting medical and nursing care activities using robotic technologies, and employing human resources from overseas. The purpose of this study was to determine potential legal issues and subsequent implications for care during prevention gymnastic exercises for the elderly using Pepper in long-term health facilities. The application program of Care-Prevention Gymnastics Exercises for Pepper (Pepper with CPGE) was made by the Xing Company Japan. Currently, care workers become intermediaries for the safe use of Pepper with CPGE. However, it was realized that some legal issues may arise if Pepper with CPGE alone will carry out these preventive care programs for the elderly without the presence of care workers as intermediaries. In this situation, using Pepper with CPGE alone to conduct care prevention gymnastics will require safety measures to prevent these possible practice issues and anticipate implications for care. In this regard, determining detailed target levels of rehabilitation exercise demands and environmental setting safety become essential factors. The use of humanoid robots in healthcare is expected to influence more practice protocols in contemporary and futurist rehabilitative human care. The identification of possible safety issues in performance and environmental situations, and implications for care are critical to ensure safe and valuable rehabilitative health care practices for the elderly population.

The purpose of this article is to describe recommendations towards the design and direction of development for Humanoid Nursing Robots (HNRs) from the standpoint of researchers of nursing care practice. Efforts to introduce robot technologies in nursing practice and to use them in elderly and high-tech healthcare environments have begun in developed countries like Japan. Companies are developing various types of robots, although their types and functionalities continue to require a clear identification and definition. Regardless, robot developments for health care purposes are progressing well to meet universal technological demands. While human caring has been a human-to-human relationship, in a nonhuman-to-human relationship in the case of HNRs, it is essential to consider ethical concerns and human safety. If HNRs are to support patients directly, they must be required to have the same level of comprehensive judgment ability and responsiveness as that of human nurses. This includes abilities to genuinely observe, judge, rapidly respond, and conduct human caring practice emphasizing individuality. If HNRs support patients independently, abilities which are much like those of humans will be required of them in addition to the appropriate intelligence and skillfulness to do so. A low level robot nurse exerts work that should be called non-nursing or as a medical aid assistant no matter who thinks and what these technologies can do. Similarly, a higher level HNR with higher level artificial intelligence is expected to exceed the capabilities of human beings. As such, current discourse and debate also include the concern that HNRs may now become one’s superior or rather that the HNR is a subordinate thereby requiring human management.

Faraday effect measurements of holmium oxide(Ho_2O_3) ceramics-based magneto-optical materials, highly potential material candidates for high-energy laser Faraday isolators, are presented in this paper. Temperature dependence of the Verdet constant of nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceramics was measured for temperatures 15–305 K at 1.064 μm *** Verdet constant dispersion for wavelengths 0.5–1 μm and 1.064 μm was measured for both nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceramics and Ho_2O_3 ceramics doped with terbium Tb3+(0.2 at. %) and cerium Ce3+(0.1 at. %) ions. The results suggest that the relatively low level of doping of Ho_2O_3 with these ions has no significant boosting impact on the Faraday effect. Therefore, other compositions of Ho_2O_3 ceramics-based magneto-optical materials, as well as various doping concentrations, should be further examined.
