Dear Editor,Somatic cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells,called induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs),by defined transcription factors(Takahashi et al.,2006).The reprogramming of somatic cells may be a continuous stochastic process in which nearly all somatic donor cells have the ability to give rise to iPSCs with continuous passaging and the expression of defined factors(Hanna et al.,2009).However,the reprogramming process can be divided into discrete stages,including the generation of dedifferentiated pre-pluripotent cells followed by authentic pluripotent cells(Silva et al.,2009).

This paper investigates the design formula for the shear strength at the concrete-to-concrete interface proposed in Eurocode with regard to concrete layers with different strengths. Based upon the results of the study on the applicability of the design formula, push-off test is conducted on specimens with various indented interfaces to evaluate the actual behavior with respect to the surface roughness. The experimental results reveal that the interfacial shear strength increases with higher compressive strength of the concrete layers presenting different strengths and that the shear strength at the indented interface differs by 20% to 50% compared to the value predicted by the design formula. Especially, the shear strength developed between the concrete layers with different strengths appears to be different from the prediction of the design formula as much as the layers present larger difference in their compressive strengths.

BACKGROUND There is insufficient evidence regarding the effect of high-intensity statin therapy in older *** study aimed to investigate the effects of high-intensity statin treatment on the clinical outcomes in older adults with myocardial infarc-tion(MI).METHODS Consecutive patients with MI aged at least 75 years were analyzed *** primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events(MACCE),defined as a composite of all-cause death,MI,rehospitalization due to un-stable angina,repeat revascularization,and ischemic *** high-intensity group was compared to the low-to-moderate in-tensity group in the propensity score-matched *** Average age of total 546 patients was 81 *** them,84%of patients underwent percutaneous coronary *** unadjusted seven-year MACCE rate differed by statin intensity(high-intensity statin group:38%,moderate-intensity statin group:42%,low-intensity statin group:56%,and no-statin group:61%,P=0.004).However,among these groups,many baseline characteristics were significantly *** the 74 propensity score-matched pairs,which lacked any significant differences in all baseline characteristics,the high-intensity group had a significantly lower rate of MACCE than the low-to-moderate intensity group(37%vs.53%,P=0.047).Follow-up low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly lower in the high-intensity group than that in the low-to-moderate intensity group(69.4±16.0 mg/dL vs.77.9±25.9 mg/dL,P=0.026).CONCLUSIONS In older adult patients with MI,the use of high-intensity statin caused significantly less occurrence of MACCE in comparison to that in low-to-moderate intensity for up to seven years of follow-up.

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics of left primary epiploic appendagitis and to compare them with those of left colonic ***:We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiologic images of the patients who presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain and had computer tomography(CT) performed at the time of presentation showing radiological signs of left primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) or left acute colonic diverticulitis(ACD) between January 2001 and December 2011. A total of 53 consecutive patients were enrolled and evaluated. We also compared the clinical characteristics,laboratory findings,treatments,and clinical results of left PEA with those of left ***:Twenty-eight patients and twenty-five patients were diagnosed with symptomatic left PEA and ACD,respectively. The patients with left PEA had focal abdominal tenderness on the left lower quadrant(82.1%). On CT examination,most(89.3%) of the patients with left PEA were found to have an oval fatty mass with a hyperattenuated ring sign. In cases of left ACD,the patients presented with a more diffuse abdominal tenderness throughout the left side(52.0%vs 14.3%; P = 0.003). The patients with left ACD had fever and rebound tenderness more often than those with left PEA(40.0% vs 7.1%,P = 0.004; 52.0% vs14.3%,P = 0.003,respectively). Laboratory abnormalities such as leukocytosis were also more frequently observed in left ACD(52.0% vs 15.4%,P = 0.006).CONCLUSION:If patients have left-sided localized abdominal pain without associated symptoms or laboratory abnormalities,clinicians should suspect the diagnosis of PEA and consider a CT scan.

Embryonic stem cells(ESCs) maintain their cellular identity through the systematic regulation of master transcription factors and chromatin remodeling complexes. Recent work has shown that the unusually large-scale enhancers—namely super-enhancers(SEs), on which BRD4, a member of the bromodomain and extraterminal domain(BET) family is highly enriched—could regulate pluripotency-related transcription factors. Moreover, inhibition of BRD4 binding on SEs has been shown to induce the differentiation of ESCs. However, the underlying mechanism of BRD4 inhibition-mediated stem cell differentiation remains elusive. Here we show that both mouse and human ESCs lose their capacity for self-renewal upon treatment with JQ1, a selective inhibitor of BET family including BRD4, with rapid suppression of pluripotency-associated genes. Notably, a high concentration of JQ1 could selectively eliminate ESCs via apoptosis, without affecting the functionality of differentiated somatic cells from ESCs, suggesting that inhibition of BET may have a beneficial effect on the development of pluripotent stem cell-based cell therapy.

Parametric Analysis on the Optimal Dimensions of Steel Sleeve in Swaging Type Anchorage for CFRP Tendon

This paper presents the parametric analysis conducted to derive the optimal dimensions of the steel sleeve necessary to secure the bond performance of the swaging type anchorage for CFRP tendon with diameter of 5 mm. To that goal, finite element analysis is performed on the parameters determining the dimensions of the sleeve like the thickness and inner diameters of the sleeve. The results show that a constant swaging pressure of about 450 MPa on the mean is distributed in the sleeve when the thickness ratio of the stress relief zone to the effective swaging zone of the sleeve is larger than 1.1 and that the swaging pressure tends to reduce linearly as much as this thickness ratio becomes smaller than 1.1. The pressure varies within a range of about 30% according to the change in the inner diameter of the sleeve whereas varies within a range less than 10% according to the change in the inner diameter when the thickness ratio is larger than 1.1. Finally, the optimal dimensions of the steel tube sleeve enabling to secure an anchor force larger than the rupture strength of the CFRP tendon with diameter of 5 mm are determined based upon the results of the parametric analysis.

Interstitial lung disease （ILD） is a comprehensive term referring to a group of lung diseases affecting the interstitium of the lung. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis （IPF） is the most common idiopathic ILD, and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia （NSIP） is the second most common. As the name suggests, NSIP is diagnosed atter many other diseases are excluded. The main pathological finding in NSIP is homogeneous interstitial inflammation with or without fibrosis. NSIP can be categorized by cellular type or fibrotic type, according to the grade of inflammation and fibrosis. The cellular type has mostly inflammatory lesions with good responses to steroid, but the fibrotic type has a large proportion of fibrosis mixed with inflammatory lesions and a relatively poor response to steroid treatment So far, the exact mechanism underlying idiopathic lED has not been clarified. Determining key regulators of these ILDs will be helpful in the diagnosis and development of novel drugs for ILD.

As part of a research intending to develop steel-concrete hybrid girder using ultra high performance concrete with compressive strength of 80 MPa, this study conducts loading test on this girder to investigate the methods for its composition with a slab using 30 MPa-concrete and the corresponding interfacial behavior. Prior to the loading test, the design formula of the Eurocode for the shear resistance developed in concrete-to-concrete interface is examined for the interface between concrete layers of different strengths. The effect of the surface roughness on the shear resistance is examined using this formula and finite element analysis to verify the applicability of the formula. Based upon the results, loading test is conducted on girder specimens to evaluate the actual behavior with respect to the interfacial surface condition. The test results reveal that the specimen with rough interface could not develop perfectly composite behavior and experienced adhesive failure. In case of simultaneous action of flexure and shear, it appears that conservative design should be applied without consideration of the interfacial condition when determining the arrangement of shear reinforcement.

Behavior Characteristics of Bonded Type Anchorage for CFRP Tendon

This paper examines the shear stress and displacement occurring in CFRP tendons through finite element analysis on the parameters influencing the anchoring performance to evaluate the behavioral characteristics of the bonded type anchorage for CFRP tendon. The selected parameters are the inner angle of the anchorage barrel, the friction between the barrel and filling material, and the elastic modulus of the filling material. The difference in the behavioral characteristics is examined for each parameter. In view of the analytic results, the shear stress developed in the CFRP tendon reduces with larger inner angle of the barrel and lower elastic modulus of the filling material. However, such combination provokes also the increase of the relative displacement of the CFRP tendon. Especially, slip failure may occur due to the lack of the confining force necessary for the anchorage due to the sudden loss of vertical force brought by the wedge force. The experimental results relative to barrel inner angles of 2° and 4° showed that the specimen with an angle of 2° preserved its anchoring performance up to tensile failure whereas the specimen with an angle of 4°?failed in developing its maximum anchoring performance due to slip failure.
