Unraveling the role of iron on Ni-Fe alloy nanoparticles during the electrocatalytic ethanol-to-acetate process

The anodic electrooxidation of ethanol to value-added acetate is an excellent example of replacing the oxygen evolution reaction to promote the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction and save energy.Herein,we present a colloidal strategy to produce Ni-Fe bimetallic alloy nanoparticles(NPs)as efficient electrocatalysts for the electrooxidation of ethanol in alkaline media.Ni-Fe alloy NPs deliver a current density of 100 mA·cm^(-2) in a 1.0 M KOH solution containing 1.0 M ethanol merely at 1.5 V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE),well above the performance of other electrocatalysts in a similar system.Within continuous 10 h testing at this external potential,this electrode is able to produce an average of 0.49 mmol·cm^(-2)·h^(-1) of acetate with an ethanol-to-acetate Faradaic efficiency of 80%.A series of spectroscopy techniques are used to probe the electrocatalytic process and analyze the electrolyte.Additionally,density functional theory(DFT)calculations demonstrate that the iron in the alloy NPs significantly enhances the electroconductivity and electron transfer,shifts the rate-limiting step,and lowers the energy barrier during the ethanol-to-acetate reaction pathway.

The BETA application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC)is a fully programmable chip designed to amplify,shape and digitize the signal of up to 64 Silicon photomultiplier(SiPM)channels,with a power consumption of approximately~1 mW/channel.Owing to its dual-path gain,the BETA chip is capable of resolving single photoelectrons(phes)with a signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)>5 while simultaneously achieving a dynamic range of~4000 phes.Thus,BETA can provide a cost-effective solution for the readout of SiPMs in space missions and other applications with a maximum rate below 10 kHz.In this study,we describe the key characteristics of the BETA ASIC and present an evaluation of the performance of its 16-channel version,which is implemented using 130 nm technology.The ASIC also contains two discriminators that can provide trigger signals with a time jitter down to 400 ps FWHM for 10 phes.The linearity error of the charge gain measurement was less than 2%for a dynamic range as large as 15 bits.

The commercial viability of thermoelectric(TE)devices relies heavily on two factors:cost reduction and efficiency enhancement.In this study,we first produce p-type Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(16-x)(x=0,3,4)using a low-temperature bottom-up approach and demonstrate Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)to show the best TE performance among the three tested compositions.Subsequently,the TE energy conversion efficiency of Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)is further enhanced by optimizing its electronic band structure through the incorporation of small amounts of tel-lurium.At an optimal Te content of 5 mol%,more than a twofold increase in the TE figure of merit(zT)is obtained.To gain insight into the mechanism of improvement on the transport properties of the mate-rial,we compare the interphase transport mechanism by incorporating nanodomains of different metals(Ag and Cu)into the Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)matrix.The improved electrical conductivity obtained with Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)-Te nanocomposites is attributed to a charge flooding of the Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)surface.In contrast,excessive down-ward band-bending at the interphases of Ag/Cu metal-semiconductor drastically reduces the electrical conductivity.Besides,a weighted mobility(μw)analysis shows a dominant thermal activation of carri-ers in Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)-Te nanocomposites.In this material,a strong decrease in lattice thermal conductivity is also found,which is associated with a phonon-carrier scattering mechanism.Our work shows the impor-tance of proper band-engineering in TE nanocomposites to decouple electrical and thermal transport to enhance TE performance,and the efficacy ofμw for electrical and thermal transport analysis.

Narrow band imaging and white light endoscopy in the characterization of a polypectomy scar:A single-blind observational study

AIM To assess the incremental benefit of narrow band imaging(NBI) and white light endoscopy(WLE), randomizing the initial technique for the detection of residual neoplasia at the polypectomy scar after an endoscopic piecemeal mucosal resection(EPMR).METHODS We conducted an observational study in an academic center to assess the incremental benefit of NBI and WLE randomly applied 1:1(NBI-WLE or WLE-NBI) in the follow-up of a post-EPMR scar by the same endoscopist.RESULTS A total of 112 EPMR scars were included. The median baseline polyp size was 20 mm(interquartile range: 14-30). At first review, NBI and WLE showed good sensitivity(85.0% vs 78.9%), specificity(77.1% vs 84.2%) and overall accuracy(80.0% vs 82.5%). NBI after WLE(WLE-NBI group) improved accuracy, but this difference was not statistically significant [area under the curve(AUC): 86.8% vs 81.6%, P = 0.15]. WLE after NBI(NBI-WLE group) did not improve accuracy(AUC: 81.4% vs 81.1%, P = 0.9). Overall, recurrence was found in 39/112(34.8%) lesions.CONCLUSION Although no statistically significant differences were found between the two techniques at the first postEPMR assessment, the use of NBI after WLE may improve residual neoplasia detection. Nevertheless, biopsy is still required in the first scar review.

AIM:To evaluate the effectiveness of infliximab as a second-line therapy in Crohn's disease patients after adalimumab failure. METHODS:A historical cohort study in a community-based gastroenterology practice evaluated Crohn's disease patients treated with infliximab (induction plus maintenance) after adalimumab failure. Patients were identified using a large Spanish database (ENEIDA). RESULTS:We included 15 Crohn's disease patients who received infliximab after adalimumab failure. Five patients discontinued adalimumab due to loss of response, 3 due to adverse events and 7 due to partial response. After infliximab therapy was started, all patients who had interrupted adalimumab due to loss of efficacy regained response. All patients who discontinued adalimumab due to adverse events responded to infliximab and maintained this response; one of these patients had an uneventful course on infliximab, but 2 developed adverse events. None of the 7 patients who interrupted adalimumab due to partial response reached remission with infliximab. CONCLUSION:Switching from adalimumab to infliximab may be useful in patients who develop adverse effects or loss of response, however, the benefit of infliximab in primary nonresponders was not established.

AIM:To evaluate changes in colorectal cancer(CRC) survival over the last 20 years.METHODS:We compared two groups of consecutive CRC patients that were prospectively recruited:Group Ⅰincluded 1990 patients diagnosed between 1980 and 1994.GroupⅡincluded 871 patients diagnosed in 2001.RESULTS:The average follow up time was 21 mo(1-229)for GroupⅠand 50 mo(1-73.4)for GroupⅡ.Overall median survival was significantly longer in Group Ⅱthan in GroupⅠ(73 mo vs 25 mo,P<0.001)and the difference was significant for all tumor stages.Post surgical mortality was 8% for GroupⅠand 2% for Group Ⅱ(P<0.001).Only 17% of GroupⅠpatients received chemotherapy compared with 50% of GroupⅡpatients(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Survival in colorectal cancer patients has doubled over the past 20 years.This increase seems to be partly due to the generalization in the administration of chemotherapy and to the decrease of post surgical mortality.

下马碑遗址位于广义泥河湾盆地南部的蔚县盆地中东部,是坐落于壶流河二级阶地上的一处旷野遗址。2013年,河北省文物考古研究院对该遗址进行了考古发掘,揭露出丰富的遗物和遗迹现象;2018年起,国内外多家单位共同完成了遗址地层年代、埋藏过程、古环境和出土文化遗存的系统性多学科研究工作。该遗址发掘揭露面积12 m^(2),地层剖面深度约为290 cm,自上而下分为7个地层单位,其中第6层为原地埋藏的主文化层,基于光释光与^(14)C测年并经贝叶斯模型计算为距今4.1~3.9万年。本文对下马碑第6层出土的各类遗物与遗迹进行系统报道,主要包括382件石制品、445件动物化石碎片、1件骨器和1套赭石颜料加工遗存,以及1处火塘。该遗址的发现与研究再现了距今4万年前东亚早期现代人加工、使用赭石颜料和复合工具的生活图景,更新了国际学术界对东亚早期现代人行为适应的认识。

PdMoSb trimetallene as high-performance alcohol oxidation electrocatalyst

Metallenes are an emerging class of two-dimensional(2D)material with outstanding potential in electrocatalysis.Herein,we present a new PdMoSb trimetallene produced by a facile wet-chemistry procedure and tested for the alcohol oxidation reaction.PdMoSb shows an extremely high Pd utilization and superior performance toward ethanol,methanol,and glycerol electro-oxidation compared with PdMo and commercial Pd/C catalysts.Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhanced activity relies not only on the high surface area that characterizes the ultrathin 2D metallene structure,but also on the particular electronic configuration of Sb.Sb facilitates OH−adsorption in the reactive-intermediate pathway and strongly enhances the CO tolerance in the poisoning-intermediate pathway for alcohol oxidation.The excellent alcohol oxidation performance of PdMoSb trimetallene demonstrates the high potential of multimetallenes in the field of electrocatalysis.

Adsorption of neodymium,terbium and dysprosium using a synthetic polymer-based magnetic adsorbent

In this study,a polyamide with methine-thiophene and pyrimidine linkages(poly(pyrimidine-thiophene-amide)(PPTA))was synthesized.Then,magnetic PPTA(M-PPTA)was synthesized using the hydrothermal technique.The products were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM),and a vibrating-sample magnetometer(VSM).The nanocomposite exhibits a saturation magnetization of 50.44 emu/g recorded by VSM analysis.The ability of M-PPTA to bind dysprosium(Dy^(3+)),terbium(Tb^(3+)),and neodymium(Nd^(3+))was investigated.Using 0.15 g of M-PPTA to test the adsorption of the rare earth elements(50 mg/L)at pH=5.5,the percentage of adsorption for Dy^(3+),Tb^(3+),and Nd^(3+)is 98.41%,97.48%and 95.67%,respectively.Pseudo-second-order(PSO)significantly fits the adsorption kinetic data.Freundlich equation was used to describe the adsorption equilibrium data of Dy^(3+)and Tb^(3+),while Langmuir model was used to simulate Nd^(3+)adsorption data.Increasing the temperature leads to an increase in the performance of M-PPTA,and an endothermic adsorption process was confirmed by the positive values ofΔH.After four adsorption-desorption cycles,the efficiency of adsorption of Dy^(3+),Tb^(3+),and Nd^(3+)by M-PPTA is88.75%,86.37%,and 84.64%,respectively.An antagonism effect is observed for the adsorption of the individual ions in a ternary solution.
