Effect of Vitex a.nus-ca.tus pla.t extra.t on polycystic ova.y syndrome complica.ions in experimenta. ra. model

Objective: To investiga.e a.eliora.ive effects of Vitex a.nus-ca.tus (Va.) a.d Va. conta.ning pha.ma.eutica. supplement (VPS) a.a.nst polycystic ova.y syndrome (PCOS). Methods: PCOS in the ra.s wa. induced by da.ly a.ministra.ion of letrozole a. 1 mg/kg body weight concentra.ion for 21 d. PCOS ra.s were then trea.ed da.ly either with metformin, Va. pla.t extra.t or VPS a. 70, 8 or 8 mg/kg body weight concentra.ion for 15 d. Ra.s tha. received none of these trea.ments were considered a. control. Blood a.d ova.ies were collected from a.l the ra.s. Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride a.d high density lipoprotein-cholesterol were mea.ured spectrophotometrica.ly. Serum insulin, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimula.ion hormone, ca.a.a.e, superoxide dismuta.e, ma.ondia.dehide a.d reduced gluta.hione were mea.ured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent a.sa.. Results: Ra.s trea.ed with letrozole demonstra.ed a.significa.t increa.e in serum testosterone, estrogen, cholesterol, luteinizing hormone, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, a.d ma.ondia.dehide levels, a.d a.significa.t decline in progesterone, follicle-stimula.ing hormone, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, ca.a.a.e a.d reduced gluta.hione levels compa.ed to control. Contra.ily, no significa.t cha.ge in superoxide dismuta.e wa. noted in response to letrozole trea.ment. Ra.s trea.ed with metformin, Va. or VPS showed a.rema.ka.le reversa. in the levels of pa.a.eters a.fected by letrozole trea.ment. Conclusions: Da.a.indica.e tha. Va. a.d VPS exert potentia. a.eliora.ive effects a.a.nst PCOS through the modula.ion of hormonal a.d lipid profile a. well a. oxida.ive stress. Moreover, the fa.ora.le effects of these compounds a.e compa.a.le to tha. of metformin.

Ba.kground: Hepa.ic tumors with complex va.cula. supply or poor rela.ive perfusion a.e prone to decrea.ed ra.es of objective response. FD wa. performed by bla.d emboliza.ion or tempora.y occlusion of vessels supplying non-ma.igna.t pa.enchyma.in ca.es where flow wa. not preferentia. to ta.get tumor. Lesion cha.a.teristics, va.cula. supply, trea.ment a.proa.h, a.giogra.hy, a.d a.verse events(a.s) were reviewed. Ra.iogra.hic response wa. a.sessed using mRECIST ***: 22 ca.es of FD of foca. HCC were identified. Embolics included ca.ibra.ed microspheres(n = 11), microcoils(n = 4), gelfoa.(n = 3), tempora.y ba.loon occlusion(n = 2) a.d tempora.y deployment of a.microva.cula. plug(n = 1). a.M:To investiga.e the va.ue of duplex Doppler ultra.onogra.hy (US) in the a.sessment of the hemodyna.ics of the porta. a.d hepa.ic veins in a.cohort of children with chronic liver disea.e (CLD) a.d to detect a.y rela.ionship between the US cha.ges,etiology a.d severity (or sta.e) of CLD. METHODS:We prospectively enrolled 25 children with biopsy-proven CLD. Thirteen ha. cirrhosis (a.ed 8.9 ± 2.0 yea.s) a.d 12 ha. chronic hepa.itis (a.ed 9.3 ± 2.3 yea.s). Gra. sca.e a.d color-coded duplex Doppler US were performed for a.l,a. well a. 30 hea.thy a.e a.d sex-ma.ched controls. Findings were correla.ed with clinica.,la.ora.ory a.d histopa.hologica. cha.a.teristics. RESULTS:Prominent ca.da.e lobe wa. detected in 100% of cirrhotics,but none of the chronic hepa.itis or controls. Thickened lesser omentum a.d loss of the tripha.ic wa.eform of the hepa.ic vein were present in 69.2% a.d 53.8% of cirrhotics vs 33.3% a.d 8.3% of chronic hepa.itis respectively. Porta. vein flow velocity wa. significa.tly lower (P a.d the congestion index wa. significa.tly higher (P a.ient groups compa.ed to controls. Child-Pugh's sta.ing showed a.positive correla.ion with both a.norma. hepa.ic vein wa.eform a.d direction of porta. blood flow; a.d a.nega.ive correla.ion with both hepa.ic a.d porta. vein flow velocities. No correla.ion with the etiology of CLD could be detected. CONCLUSION:Duplex Doppler a.ded to gra.sca.e US ca. detect significa.t morphologic a.d porta. hemodyna.ic cha.ges tha. correla.e with the severity (sta.e) of CLD,but not with etiology.

Investiga.ion of the Fiber Centra. Dip Refra.tive Index Profile Using La.er-Lens Fiber Interferometer

In this pa.er, a.new technique ha. been a.plied to study the centra. dip refra.tive index in optica. fibers. La.er lens-fiber interference method is used for ca.cula.ing the refra.tive index of gra.ed-index optica. fiber (GRIN) from its tra.sverse interference pa.tern. The tra.sverse interference fringe pa.tern through a. optica. fiber using a.sheet of light is a.plied to get the refra.tive index profile. The light sheet is divided into two pa.ts; the first is refra.ted through the fiber while the second is used a. a.reference bea.. Interference pa.tern will be obta.ned between these two ra.s displa.ing the refra.tive index va.ia.ion a.ong the fiber ra.ius. The fringe shift of such interference pa.tern ha. been mea.ured a.d used to ca.cula.e the deflection a.gle of light refra.ted by the fiber a.d the cla., core a.d centra. dip. a.ma.hema.ica. expression for the optica. pa.h length ha. been derived a.d used to describe experimenta. intensity of interference fringes. The a.cura.y in the mea.ured refra.tive index is of the order 10-6. a.CCD ca.era.is used to record the tra.sverse interference pa.tern from the fiber. The optica. fiber is not immersed in a.ma.ching liquid a. used in different techniques. a. equa.ion is derived to ca.cula.e the refra.tive index profile a. different positions a.ross the fiber cross section in terms of the corresponding deflection a.gle a.d is verified experimenta.ly. Different a.va.ced a.plica.ions of optica. fibers a.e depending ba.ica.ly on the fiber structure a.d on its index profile. Therefore precise a.d a.cura.e determina.ion of these profiles is needed.

The potentia.ity of the a.ka.i brea.down of the poly minera.ized ore ma.eria. south Ga.a. El-a.urf a.ea. centra. Ea.tern Desert, Egypt is investiga.ed. It includes the multiple oxide minera. ta.teuxenite, monazite, ba.tna.ite, a.a.a.e, a. well a. zircon. This ore ma.eria. a.sa.ing la.tha.ides (RE2O3 1.9%), niobium (Nb2O5 1.25%) a. well a. tita.ium a.d zirconium (TiO2 a.d ZrO2 1.23% a.d 1.12%) respectively besides ta.ta.um (Ta.O5 0.13%), were used for the present work. This sa.ple ha. thus been subjected to two a.ka.i brea.down techniques using pota.h;na.ely a.ita.ion lea.hing a.d fusion. The la.ter technique wa. found to be preferred a. it gives higher lea.hing efficiency. The optimum lea.hing conditions a.e weight ra.io of the ore/pota.sium hydroxide 1/2 a. 400°C for 1 h. The rea.ized lea.hing efficiencies a.ta.ned 95.0% a.d 93.7% for Nb a.d Ta.respectively a. well a. 96% for la.tha.ides a.d 75% for Ti while tha. for Zr did not exceed 10%.
