Reliability of Plasma Von Willebrand Factor Antigen in Prediction of Esophageal Varices in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Background: Bleeding esophageal varices (OVs) due to portal hypertension are one of the major complications with high mortality in liver cirrhosis. So, early detection and management are mandatory. Aim: To evaluate the role of Von Willebrand factor (VWF) in predicting the presence of OVs. Patients and methods: 62 patients with liver cirrhosis representing different Child-Pugh classes were included. The diagnosis of liver cirrhosis was based on the combination of clinical, laboratory and US examinations. All included patients underwent the following investigations: complete blood count, liver function tests (ALT, AST, serum bilirubin, albumin and total protein, prothrombin time (PT) and concentration (PC), INR and serum alkaline phosphatase), serum creatinine, Von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF-Ag) measurement and abdominal US. Upper endoscopic evaluation was done to detect presence or absence of varices (esophageal or gastric) and/or PHG. Results: 38 males and 24 females with their mean age (46 ± 12 years old) were included. Plasma Von Willebrand factor-Ag level was significantly higher in patients with OVs than those without varices (P value = 0.000). Also, its level was significantly higher in patients with higher grade of OVs, G3 than those with G1 or G2 (P value = 0.000). Patients with large OVs including those with G2 and G3 showed significantly higher values of VWF than those with small OVs (NO and G1) (P value = 0.000). VWF was independent predictor for detecting the presence of OVs with good sensitivity (90), specificity (77.3) and accuracy (85.5) at a cutoff value of 1.74 U/ml. Also it was an independent predictor for detecting the presence of large OVs with good sensitivity (91.2), specificity (85.7) and accuracy (88.7) at a cutoff value of 2.16 U/ml. Conclusion: VWF-Ag could be used as a non invasive laboratory independent predictor for the detection of OVs.

Performance Evaluation and Design of RO Desalination Plant: Case Study

The aim of this paper is to design a water desalination plant using Reverse Osmosis membrane to treat salt water to be usable for drinkable, domestic, industrial or agricultural uses. RO unit is designed to conservative standards for versatility in the event of feed water quality variations. The design includes a feed water flush cycle to minimize membrane fouling and piping corrosion during shutdown. The system will be all appropriate controls and instrumentation for automatic operation. All system components are available and of heavy duty industrial design and fabricated with the highest quality workmanship. Quality control will be maintained throughout all manufacturing processes. The system will produce permeate water minimum of 3600 m3/day with a quality of approximately 100 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS) when operating on well feed water with a 10,000 ppm TDS and a temperature of 25 - 30 degrees C. The design permeate recovery is 50%;and energy recovery device which saves $30,556.28/year.

Pollution Assessment and mining at Jazan Coastline, Saudi Arabia

The present work aims to evaluate and document the heavy metal distribution along Jazan coastline, southwest Saudi Arabia. moreover, a trial for mining minerals from seawater has been performed where solvent extraction of a spike solution containing copper, cobalt and nickel has been investigated to attain the optimal extraction conditions. The optimum conditions are found to be 7 m hydrochloric acid concentration, 5 m [H+] for 3 min shaking time with Cyanex 923 solvent conc. of 0.1 m (1:1 aqueous/organic phase ratio) at temp. 25°C. These conditions realized 92.5% copper extraction as well as 95.6% and 96.2% for cobalt and nickel extraction respectively.

Enhancement of Human Blood Storage Period by Irradiation of Low Level He-Ne Laser

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect of the He-Ne laser irradiation on the whole human blood (HB) in order to enhance the conditions of conservation. The HB was irradiated by He-Ne laser;(λ = 632 nm, continuous wave, power 30 mW, 2 mm diameter beam spot), electrical properties and complete blood count CBC were measured at three doses (0.0287, 0.0563 and 0.198 J/cm3) to the relevant best exposure dose during storage periods 9, 24, 30, 35 & 50 days. The irradiation process with the selected dose was performed by the exposure of the laser beam on the blood sample flow through narrow tube of cross section area, 0.0831 cm2. Blood dielectric parameters, (electric conductivity, dielectric constant, dielectric loss and dipole moment) and CBC, (red blood cell, white blood cell, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean cell or corpuscular hemoglobin in concentration) were measured. The obtained results were compared with that of the control and showed that the best irradiation exposure dose suitable for increasing the time of blood storage with minimum changes in properties is 0.198 J/cm3 and storage period of about 50 days. The present study revealed that irradiation by He-Ne laser could be considered a good means to improve the conservation conditions of human blood.

Effect of Lion’s Foot (<i>Alchemilla vulgaris</i>) on Liver and Renal Functions in Rats Induced by CCl<sub>4</sub>

The present work aims to study the influence of antioxidants activity of lion’s foot (Alchemilla vulgaris) leaves at different concentrations to give more protection against chronic liver disease. Results indicated that dried lion’s foot leaves had rich in total polyphenolic and flavonoids content (395.65 and 183.10 mg/100g, respectively). These results were reflected to the antioxidant activity (DPPH);it’s noticed that the antioxidant activity of dried lion’s foot leaves was high (131.74%). The major polyphenolic components were benzoic acid (1084.63 ppm) followed by ellagic acid, catechol, and catechin (614.16, 580.54, and 566.53 ppm, respectively) then salicylic acid and protocatechuic acid (479.71 and 444.43 ppm, respectively). On the same trend, flavonoids fractions indicated the highest content in luteo-6-arabinase 8-glucose, apig. 6-rhamnase 8-glucose, acatein, narengin and luteolin (40.01;15.04;8.07;6.64 and 6.42 ppm, respectively). Fifty-six male albino rats were used in biological experiments. Rats fed on basal diet for two weeks before the performance of the experiment. At the beginning, rats divided into eight main group were fed on diets for 45 days as follows: Negative control group (first group) was fed on basal diet. Forty nine rats were fed on basal diet and induced by CCl4, in paraffin oil (50% v/v, 2 ml/Kg) twice weeks subcutaneous injection to induce chronic damage in the liver, then divided into 7 groups numbered from group 2 to group 8. Positive control group rats fed on basal diet till final experiment (second group). Group 3 and 4 rats treated with 50 and 100 ppm ethanolic leaves extracts, respectively. Also, group 5 and 6 treated with 50 and 100 ppm aqueous leaves extracts, respectively. All extracts were fed on orally every day. While, rats in group 7 treated with 1% and 2% dried lion’s foot leaves. At the end of the experimental period, serums were collected to determine liver and renal functions. Synthesis, Reactions and Antimicrobial Activity of Some New 3-Substituted Indole Derivatives

Reaction of indole-3-carboxaldehydes 4 with hydrazine derivatives and different substituted acid hydrazides afforded the corresponding hydrazine derivatives 5a-c and acid hydrazide derivatives 7-11 respectively. Condensation of indole-3-carboxaldehydes 4 with phenacyl bromide and thiourea gives 1,3-thiazol-2-amine derivative 18. On the other hand, reaction 4 with 3-acetylchromene-2-one afforded chalcone derivative 19. Compound 4 undergoing Knoevenagel condensation with cyanoacetamide, ethyl cyanoacetate, benzimidazol-2-ylacetonitrile, rhodanine-3-acetic acid, 2,3-dihydropyrimidin-4-one derivative and 2,4-dihydropyrazol-3-one afforded the compounds 20a,b, 22, 23, 27 and 28 respectively. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds has been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectra data. Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) unsuccessful regeneration was due to glial scar development. It was a major obstacle to axonal restoration. Safe therapeutic intervention by the use of bone marrow derived stem cells (BmmSCs) transplantation applied in the present study could reduce spinal disability. material and methods: Forty male albino rats were divided into four groups: GI: negative control (n = 10 rats);GII: positive control after SCI (n = 10 rats);GIII: SCI + Bm - mSCs intravenous injected and GIV: SCI + Bm - mSCs intra lesion injected (n = 10 rats in each group). The samples were taken from spinal cord tissues around the region of injury and were subjected to histological, immunohistochemical assessment. RNA extraction and real time PCR for detection of nerve regeneration and astrocyte response to the injury were also performed. Results: Clinical improvement occurred by the enhancement in the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) score after SCI. Histological examinations showed positive regenerative responses in GIV compared to GIII. Conclusion: Bm-mSCs transplantation has a promising role in enhancing the microenvironment for nerve regeneration through stumbling the glial scaring formation and inflammatory response after chronic spinal cord injury especially by using intra-lesion route injection.

Current mode Logic Testing of XOR/XNOR Circuit: A Case Study

This paper investigates the issue of testing Current mode Logic (CmL) gates. A three-bit parity checker is used as a case study. It is first shown that, as expected, the stuck-at fault model is not appropriate for testing CmL gates. It is then proved that switching the order in which inputs are applied to a gate will affect the minimum test set;this is not the case in conventional voltage mode gates. Both the circuit output and its inverse have to be monitored to reduce the size of the test set.

目的研究透明质酸及其受体CD44在麻风患者皮损愈后者表皮的表达是否发生改变。方法用免疫组化方法比较透明质酸及其受体CD44在不同类型麻风患者愈后及正常表皮中的表达。结果与正常表皮比较,透明质酸在LL、BL及BT型麻风患者皮损愈后表皮的表达明显增强;而在TT型表皮的表达没有明显的改变;在BB型基底层的表达也轻微减弱。CD44在BB,BT及TT类型麻风患者愈后表皮的表达均增强,尤其是TT型。而在LL型的表达则轻微减弱。CD44在BL型的表达没有明显改变。结论麻风患者愈后表皮透明质酸及CD44的表达均有改变。
