Hence, PHB belongs to the fa.ily ofpoly (β-hydroxya.ka.oa.tes), PHa. a.l of which a.e usua.ly formed a. intra.ellula. inclusions in ba.teria.under unba.a.ced growth conditions. Recently, it beca.e of industria. interest to eva.ua.e these PHa.polyesters a. na.ura. biodegra.a.le a.d biocompa.ible pla.tics for a.wide ra.ge of possible a.plica.ions, such a. surgica. sutures or pa.ka.ing conta.ners. For industria. a.plica.ions, the controlled incorpora.ion of repea.ing units with different cha.n lengths into a.series of copolymers is desira.le in order to produce polyesters with a.ra.ge of ma.eria. properties beca.se physica. a.d chemica. cha.a.teristics depend strongly on the polymer composition. Such 'ta.lor-ma.e' copolymers ca. be produced under controlled growth conditions in tha., if a.defined mixture of substra.es for a.certa.n type of microorga.isms is supplied, a.well defined a.d reproducible copolymer is formed.
