Protective effect of naringenin on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats

Zone II Flexor Tendon Repair in a 13-month-Old: Report of a Complication

Despite early cautions against the primary repair of zone II flexor tendon injuries, recent advances in surgical technique and suture materials have allowed such repairs to become commonplace. The 6-strand repair technique is rarely applied to the young pediatric population, however, to our knowledge, no English-language articles have described this method of primary repair in zone II of children less than 2 years old. A 13-month-old male presented flexor digitorum profundus repair after lacerating it in zone II on a sharp aluminum can. The tendon was repaired with a 6-strand technique, using a 4.0 Fiberloop for the core suture and 6.0 Prolene for the epitendinous suture. Approximately four months after surgery, the patient developed a palmar collection at the level of his middle phalanx and a serosanguinous sinus tract at the distal interphalangeal crease. During the revision surgery, the inspection of the repaired tendon revealed a small gap filled with scar tissue. There was no evidence of new fistula formation at his final visit one month after the second procedure. After the revision, the patient could move his digit with minimal loss of range of motion at the distal interphalangeal joints. Unfortunately, he was subsequently lost to follow up. This surgical technique was selected to provide a strong repair that would allow the early postoperative movement. In retrospect, a 6-strand repair with braided suture is not ideal in young children as the bulky suture can cause a foreign-body reaction and possibly extrude through the skin. Additionally, the immobilization with a long-arm cast remains a valuable tool after tendon repair in infants who cannot voluntarily restrict their movements.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is considered one of the major health threats facing males in Sudan. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is the most important laboratory test used in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, the main disadvantage of PSA is its limited specificity, which triggered a lot of interest in development, more research on other markers such as serum human kallikrein-2 (KLK-2) and free prostate specific antigen (fPSA). Objectives: To evaluate the validity of serum kallikrein-2 (KLK-2) and free prostate specific antigen (fPSA) in the early detection of prostate cancer among Sudanese patients. method: In this study seventy men were considered as a case subject, who were diagnosed as cancer prostate at Gezira Hospital for Renal Disease and Surgery (GHRDS), Sudan during the period February 2018 to July 2019. Randomly selected sixty patients of BPH patients and forty-five apparently healthy men as control subject. KLK-2, fPSA and PSA estimations were performed from serum samples using the principle of Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Results: The results revealed a highly significant difference between the serum levels individual biomarkers (KLK-2, fPSA, PSA) and multiple biomarkers (fPSA/PSA, KLK-2/fPSA, KLK-2/PSA) for patients with prostate cancer when compared with the control groups. Furthermore, the fPSA/PSA ratio was lower in the patients with prostate cancer (P value = 0.00) than in the control group, the fPSA/PSA ratio showed that best accuracy to differentiate prostate cancer from control group, fPSA cut-off value was found to be more than (18 ng/ml), with sensitivity (93%), specificity (80%), and odds ratio (55). Conclusions: The use of multiple biomarkers rather than individual biomarkers especially fPSA/PSA ratio improves the specificity as well as maintenance of higher sensitivity for early diagnosis of the prostate cancer.

Nanosecond pulse and dual-wavelength Q-switched 1.5 μm fiber laser using mAX phase Cr2TiAlC2 saturable absorber

We demonstrated a new type of mAX phase material, chromium titanium aluminum carbide（Cr2TiAlC2） polymer film, to generate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser（EDFL）. The film thickness was measured to be around 45 μm, which was fabricated using the embedding method with polyvinyl alcohol（PVA） polymer as hoster. The saturable absorber（SA） film demonstrates a dual-wavelength passively Q-switched EDFL which operates at 1 531 nm and 1 560.19 nm, respectively. The Q-switching pulse duration could be varied from 2.46 μs to 770 ns, while the repetition rate varied from 92.76 kHz to 106.6 kHz with an increasing input pumping range from 154 mW to 300 mW. The maximum output power and pulse energy of 15.05 mW and 141.18 nJ were obtained at the maximum input power of 300 mW, respectively.

Fabrication and characterization of gold nano particles for DNA biosensor applications

This research involves the preparation ofa biosensor using silicon oxide for biomedical applications, and its effective use for the detection of target DNA hybridization. An electrochemical DNA biosensor was successfully fabricated by using （3-aminopropyl） tri-ethoxysilane （APTES） as a linker molecule combined with gold nanoparticles （GNPs） on a thermally oxidized 5i02 thin film. The size of the GNPs was calculated by utilizing UV-vis data with an average calculated particle size within the range of 30 - 5 nm, and characterization by transmission electron microscopy （TEm） and atomic force microscopy （AFm）. The GNP-modified SiO2 thin films were electrically characterized through the measurement of capacitance, permittivity and conductivity using a low-cost dielectric analyzer. The capacitance, permittivity and conductivity profiles of the fabricated sensor clearly differentiated DNA immobilization and hybridization.

Hydrocarbon generating-potential and maturity-related changes of the Khatatba Formation, Western Desert, Egypt

The petroliferous province of the Western Desert comprises several sedimentary basins with different hydrocarbon potentiality and production *** middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation was proved a potential source rock in some basins and active/effective in *** current study aims to give a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the potential organic-rich intervals of the Khatatba Formation across JG and JD fields,northeast Abu Gharadig Basin(NEAG).The hydrocarbon generating capability and sourcing of the Khatatba Formation studied through organic geochemistry calibrated with well ***,the efficiency of some widely used plots of geochemistry is re-evaluated according to their accuracy and *** cuttings,thirteen cores and two oil samples obtained from three wells(JG-2,JG-3 and JD-4)were *** samples revealed total organic carbon(TOC)values ranging from 1 to 9 wt%,exhibiting a good-excellent potential source rock.A single sample in the JD-4 well attained a TOC value of 21.3 wt%with a generating potential(represented by S2 parameter)exceeding 146 mgHc/g rock required a special *** of the samples(mainly in the JD-4 well)attained a sufficient level of thermal maturity for hydrocarbon generation with a Tmax up to 449*** vitrinite reflectance(%Ro)values(a common maturity-related indicator)acquired from the JD-4 well ranging between 0.76%and 0.92%.These values are tediously increasing with depth indicating a uniform geothermal *** Khatatba organofacies,with wide variety of kerogen types(I,II,II-S and II/III),contain marine organic matter with a slight terrigenous input,exhibiting anoxic-suboxic environmental ***-source correlations define the organic-rich intervals responsible for charging the accumulated hydrocarbon in the NEAG concession.
