Treatment outcomes of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia from 2001 to 2017:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background:Ethiopia has the highest number of visceral leishmaniasis(VL)cases after Sudan in Sub-Saharan ***,there was lack of comprehensive data on VL treatment outcome despite the huge burden of the diseases in the ***,we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic to obtain stronger evidence on treatment outcomes of VL from the existing literature in ***:The Cochrane guidelines to conduct meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis statement was used to conduct a computerized systematic search of the PubMed,Google Scholar,and ScienceDirect *** effects model was used to combine studies showing heterogeneity of Cochrane Q P*** outcomes were assessed at end of treatment and at 6 months *** analyses were performed on treatment outcomes based on the different antileishmanial treatment options and patients’HIV ***:Fifteen studies were included in the final *** end of treatment,an overall treatment success rate of 82.6%was *** 6 months follow-up,the overall treatment success rate was 72.2%.For patients treated with sodium stibogluconate(SSG),the treatment success rates at the end of treatment and at six-month follow-up were 81.5%and 80.7%,*** doses of liposomal-amphotericin B(L-AMB)had treatment success rates of 96.7 and 71-100%at the end of treatment and at 6 months follow-up,*** combination of SSG with paromomycin(PM)gave treatment success rates of up to 90.1%at the end of ***-infected individuals were found to have a higher mortality(odds ratio=4.77,95%CI:1.30-17.43,P=0.009)rate at 6 months ***:SSG alone has shown lower treatment efficacy in the management of VL when compared to combination of SSG with PM and multiple doses of *** combination of SSG with PM gave good treatment success rates with shorter duration of treatm

Potential drug–drug interactions in pediatric wards of Gondar University Hospital,Ethiopia:A cross sectional study

Objective: To determine the prevalence, level of severity of potential drug–drug interactions(PDDIs) and the associated factors for PDDIs in hospitalized pediatric patients of Gondar University ***: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted for a period of 3 months from March to May 2014 in pediatric wards of Gondar University Hospital. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select charts from all pediatric patients' charts with every 7th interval to get sample size of 384. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to compute crude odds ratio and adjusted odds ratio respectively. Statistical significance was set at P value < ***: A total of 176(45.8%) patients had at least one PDDI. A total of 393 PDDIs,which were comprised of 283 types of interacting combinations, were identified. Of the total of 393 PDDIs, most were of moderate severity [201(51%)] followed by minor [152(39%)] and major severity [40(10%)]. The most common interacting pairs of major severity were gentamicin + furosemide(6), cotrimoxazole + methotrexate(4) and phenytoin + artemether(4). The occurrence of PDDIs was significantly associated with age and ***: The study showed that most of the interactions had moderate severity followed by minor severity. Age and polypharmacy were found to show statistically significant association with the occurrence of PDDIs. Due to sensitive nature of pediatrics population, close monitoring is recommended for the detection and management of PDDIs to prevent its negative consequences.

Geology, Geochemistry and Geochronology of the Kenticha Rare Metal Granite Pegmatite, Adola Belt, Southern Ethiopia: A Review

This work reviews the geology, geochemistry and geochronology and discusses the spatial and temporal relationship of the granite pegmatite and the rare metal mineralization of the Kenticha granite pegmatite, southern Ethiopia using published and unpublished works to give a comprehensive understanding about the formation of the mineral deposit. The Kenticha rare metal pegmatite belt comprises several groups of pegmatites which show a high magmatic fractionation, regional and compositional zoning, mineralogical assemblage, and secondary alterations. The internal zonation shows high degree of evolution from the border to the core zone during crystallization and solidification of the leucogranitic to pegmatitic melt. Tantalum mineralization at Kenticha includes zoned tantalite-(Mn) and columbite-(Mn), as well as microlite, pyrochlore, uranmicrolite, and rare tapiolite, ixiolite/wodginite and Ta-bearing rutile. The tectonic setting of the Kenticha granite pegmatite in the Within Plate Granite (WPG) to syn-Collisional Granite (syn-COLG) granite and probably sourced from extreme fractionation of syn-to late tectonic granites or anatexis process of the metasedimentary rocks in the area. The emplacement of the Kenticha pegmatite was at ca. 530 Ma and temporally related to the post-collisional phase of granitic magmatism at 570 - 520 Ma, after the last tectonic stage of east African orogeny during the late stage of Gondwana assembly.
