A Survey on Neuropsychological State, Oxidative Stress and Hematological Parameters in Coke Oven Workers

Coke oven factories are one of the main emitting sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s which have been identified as highly carcinogenic chemicals by IARC. Induction of oxidative stress and following disrupting pathways has been repeatedly reported in subjects exposed to PAHs. This study was performed to monitor the oxidative stress markers, hematological and biochemical parameters, and psychological states in coke oven workers. 100 male subjects were included in this comparative cross-sectional study. At first 50 male workers who were 22 - 63 and worked in the steel factory located in South-East of Iran were contained. Control subjects were chosen from Esfahan, in the factory’s neighborhood, consisting of 50 office workers without any background of occupational exposure to metals. The blood levels of hematological factors and oxidative stress were measured. In order to compare data, two-sample t test was applied. In order to measure the correlation between variables, Pearson correlation coefficient was applied. The mean level of total antioxidant capacity, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hematocrit were significantly lower in the workers in association with increased lipid per oxidation (LPO). A positive correlation existed between work history, hyper thyroids (r2 = 0.288, p = 0.01), and endocrine disorders (r2 = 0.309, p = 0.028). Occupational exposure of coke oven workers to PAHs can induce oxidative stress and consequent metabolic and neuropsychological disorders. When workers take daily shower and use protective tools, absorption of toxic elements would decrease so that reaching them to the body can be suitably limited.

Prevalence,serotyping and drug susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli isolates from kidney transplanted patients with urinary tract infections

BACKGROUND Extended-spectrumβ-lactamase(ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli(***)are among the main pathogens in urinary tract infections(UTIs)among kidney transplant patients(KTPs).AIM To estimate the prevalence of ESBL-producing *** in KTPs and to evaluate the most prevalent serotypes and antibacterial susceptibility patterns of isolated bacteria in Tehran,*** A total of 60 clinical isolates of uropathogenic *** were collected from 3 kidney transplant centers from April to May *** susceptibility testing was performed by the disk diffusion method as recommended by the Clinical Laboratory and Standards *** serotyping of *** isolates was performed by the slide agglutination *** presence of blaTEM,blaSHV,and bla CTX-M genes was evaluated by polymerase chain *** The frequency of ESBL-producing *** in KTPs was found to be 33.4%.All of the 60 *** isolates were found to be susceptible to doripenem(100%)and ertapenem(100%).High resistance rates to ampicillin(86%),cefotaxime(80%),and cefazolin(77%)were also *** most frequent serotypes were serotype I(50%),serotype II(15%),serotype III(25%),and serotype VI(10%).The gene most frequently found was blaTEM(55%),followed by blaCTX-M(51%)and blaSHV(41%).CONCLUSION Molecular analysis showed that blaTEM was the most common ESBL-encoding *** high resistance toβ-lactams antibiotics(i.e.,ampicillin,cefotaxime,and cefazolin)found in *** from KTPs with UTIs remains a serious clinical *** efforts to control ESBL-producing *** should include the careful use of all antibiotics as well as barrier precautions to reduce spread.

Most of the controllers of IM （induction motor） for industrial applications have been designed based on PI controller without consideration of CL （core loss） and SLL （stray load loss）. To get the precise performances of torque as well as rotor speed and flux, the above mentioned losses should be considered. Conventional PI controller has overshoot effect at the transient period of the speed response curve. On the other hand, fuzzy logic and ANN （artificial neural network） based controllers can minimize the overshoot effect at the transient period because they have the abilities to deal with the nonlinear systems. In this paper, a comparative analysis is done between PI, fuzzy logic and ANN based speed controllers to find the suitable control strategy for IM with consideration of CL and SLL. The simulation analysis is done by using Matlab/Simulink software. The simulation results show that the fuzzy logic based speed controller gives better responses than ANN and conventional PI based speed controllers in terms of rotor speed, electromagnetic torque and rotor flux of IM.

Diabetes is a global problem and many efforts are being done all over the world searching for new drugs that can manage it more efficiently. The World Health Organization recommended the natural products to be possible source for antidiabetic compounds. Jatropha curcas plant was employed in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of several disorders. So, hexane, chloroform and ethanolic extracts of the aerial part were subjected for evaluation of their hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects. Oral administration of ethanolic extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg showed hypoglycemic and antidiabetic activities in alloxan induced diabetic mice. Bioassay-guided fractionation used to isolate the active fraction. Moreover, the drug was found to be safe up to dose of 5 g/kg. Further fractionation is recommended to find the active compound(s).

Improvement of Concrete Shear Wall Structures by Smart Materials

Smart materials have found numerous applications in many areas in civil engineering recently. One class of these materials is shape memory alloy (SMA) which exhibits several unique characteristics such as superelasticity and shape memory effect. Due to these characteristics, research efforts have been extended to use SMA in controlling civil structures. This paper investigates the effectiveness of SMA reinforcements in enhancing the behavior of shear walls, especially when subjected to seismic excitations. Two ordinary and coupled shear walls were introduced as reference structures and were modeled by ABAQUS software. For improving the seismic response of the shear walls, vertical SMA reinforcing bars were proposed to be implemented like conventional steel reinforcements, throughout the height of the structures and in every connecting beam in the coupled shear wall system. The one dimensional superelastic model of SMA material was implemented in the computer software using FORTRAN code. The dynamic response of the shear walls subjected to seismic loading was investigated through time history analyses under El-centro and Koyna records. The results showed that using superelastic SMA material instead of steel bars caused remarkable reduction in residual displacement for both ordinary and coupled shear walls. In addition, SMA reinforcements could significantly decrease the maximum deflection of the coupled shear wall system.

Efficiency and patient experience with propofol vsconventional sedation:A prospective study

AIM: To determine whether anaesthesiologistadministered sedation with propofol(AAP) or endoscopist-administered conscious sedation(EAC) with fentanyl/midazolam shortens colonoscopy duration/total room time. METHODS: This is a prospective, non-randomized, comparative study that enrolled patients greater than 18 years of age undergoing colonoscopy in a single Canadian academic outpatient endoscopy unit over a three-month consecutive period. Colonoscopies in this unit are performed both with AAP and EAC. Patient demographics, procedure-related data and adverse events were documented. Additionally, the level of procedure difficulty, and whether a staff endoscopist, trainee with assistance, or independent trainee, performed the procedure were documented. A validated modified 4-question, 5-point Likert scale telephone survey was used to assess patient satisfaction with colonoscopy. The telephone patient satisfaction survey was conducted 24-72 h following the ***: Two hundred and thirty patients were enrolled during the study period with 126 patients in the AAP group and 104 patients in the EAC group. Mean procedure time was 18.3 ± 10.1 min in the AAP group and 14.7 ± 7.1 min in the EAC group(P = 0.002). Mean total room time was 36.8 ± 13.7 with AAP and 30.1 ± 11 min with EAC(P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed the use of AAP(P = 0.002), resident participation(P < 0.001), diagnostic interventions(P = 0.033), therapeutic interventions(P < 0.001), lower body mass index(P = 0.008) and American Society of Anaesthesiologist class(P = 0.016), to be predictors of longer total room time. Patient age and gender were not significant predictors. After excluding cases in which trainees were involved, there was no significant difference in procedure time between the two groups(P = 0.941), however total room time was still prolonged in the AAP group(P = 0.019). Inhibitory effects of Albizia lebbeck leaf extracts on germination and growth behavior of some popular agricultural crops

An experiment was conducted to observe the inhibitory effects of the leaf extracts derived from Albizia lebbeck （L.） Benth. On germination and growth behavior of some popular agricultural crops （receptor） of Bangladesh. Experiments were set on sterilized petridishes with a photoperiod of 24 h at room temperature of 27-30℃. The effects of the different concentrations of aqueous extracts were compared to distil water （control.）. The aqueous extracts of leaf caused significant inhibitory effect on germination, root and shoot elongation and development of lateral roots of receptor plants. Bioassays indicated that the inhibitory effect was proportional to the concentrations of the extracts and higher concentration （50%-100%） had the stronger inhibitory effect whereas the lower concentration （10%-25%） showed stimulatory effect in some cases. The study also revealed that, inhibitory effect was much pronounced in root and lateral root development rather than germination and shoot growth.

The importance and necessity of energy saving in the world have been discussed for many years,but achieving a logical and transparent solution is still one of the main challenges and problems of the world’s *** rapid growth of energy consumption in the last two decades has caused the security of the domestic energy supply of buildings to face serious prob*** this research,first by entering parameters such as the type of materials,doors and windows,and the type of soil on the floor connected to the ground,*** the heat and cold load calculation software(HAP Carrier)as the design calculations and then in the second step entering the specifications inferred from the Iran’s national building code as a reference for energy saving calculations,calculations are performed and compared as the first criterion,and finally these two outputs are *** actual energy consumption and determination of the building energy consumption index are determined as another criterion,as well as the degree of deviation from the actual *** results showed that the theoretical method and the thermal and refrigeration load calculations of the Zanjan Gas Company building have 6%difference in cooling load but the heating load is about 34%different,which means for cooling loads,the theoretical model can be used with high accuracy but for heating loads,the national building code needs fundamental changes.

Survival rate among tuberculosis patients identified in south of Iran,2005-2016

Objective:To determine the survival rate of tuberculosis (TB) patients and to identify the important factors associated with the survival of these patients in southern ***:The present retrospective cohort study extracted and reviewed available medical records of 134 TB patients undergoing TB treatment centre,during 2005 to *** Survival rate of patients for the outcome of the interval from diagnosis until death was plotted using life table and Kaplan-Meier survival *** proportional hazard regression model was used to examine the simultaneous effect of variables on survival *** significance level was considered to be ***:In this study,64.2% of the participants were male,73.1% had pulmonary TB and 5.22% had *** survival rate of one,five and thirteen years after diagnosis were 93%.78% and 69%,*** risk of death in patients with extrapulmonary TB (95% CI=1.96-15.83,P=0.001) was 5.58 times higher than in patients with pulmonary *** risk of death in smokers with TB (95% CI=1.74-2.46,P<0.001) was 2.07 times higher than in nonsmoker patients,and also the risk of death increased to 1.1 0 times more for a one-year increase in patient age (95% CI=1.06-1.14,P<0.001).Conclusions:The risk of death in patients with extrapulmonary TB and TB smokers was higher than other ***,timely diagnosis and proper treatment of patients with extrapulmonary TB as well as the development and integration of smoking cessation programs are underlined and emphasized in the formulation and implementation of the National Tuberculosis Control Program.
