Extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)are present externally to the microorganisms and play an important role in attachment and biofilm *** polymers possess antibacterial and antifouling *** this study,the antifouling activity of EPS produced by an epibiotic bacterium associated with macroalga Ulva lactuca was assessed against fouling bacteria and barnacle *** indicate that the EPS isolated from the epibiotic bacterium inhibits the biofilm formation of the bacteria without much antibacterial ***,the EPS reduced the settlement of barnacle larvae on the hard substrate under laboratory *** epibiotic bacterium was identified as Kocuria flava based on 16 S rRNA gene *** EPS was further analysed using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)to understand the biochemical *** analysis revealed the presence of polysaccharides,proteins,acetyl amine and succinyl *** electron microscope analysis indicated that the EPS consisted of aggregated and irregular sphere-shaped particles.

Soft corals are an important group of organisms that live in reef ecosystems. In this study, the chemical defense of soft coral Sinularia polydactyla against biofilm-forming bacteria was assessed. The soft coral S. polydactyla was collected from the Obhur creek of the Red Sea and the bioactive compounds were extracted under different conditions using methanol and hexane as solvents. Results revealed that the bioactive compounds produced by the soft coral S. polydactyla were active against the growth, hydrophobicity and extracellular polymeric substances production of the biofilm-forming bacteria. However, the damage or injury in soft coral tissue caused a decrease in the activity against biofilm-forming bacteria. GC-MS analysis revealed that sesquiterpenes were abundant in normal coral sample extract while cembranoids were abundant in damaged coral sample extracts. In general, the results indicated that the soft corals either under stress or with damage may not have a strong chemical defense against the colonizing marine organisms and competitors.

Graphene oxide is a very high capacity adsorbent due to its functional groups and π-π interactions with other compounds. Adsorption capacity of graphene oxide, however, can be further enhanced by having synergistic effects through the use of mixed-matrix composite. In this study, silica-decorated graphene oxide(SGO) was used as a high-efficiency adsorbent to remove Congo red(CR) and Cadmium(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions. The effects of solution initial concentration(20 to 120 mg/l), solution pH(pH 2 to 7), adsorption duration(0 to 140 min) and temperature(298 to 323 K) were measured in order to optimize the adsorption conditions using the SGO adsorbent. Morphological analysis indicated that the silica nanoparticles could be dispersed uniformly on the graphene oxide surfaces. The maximum capacities of adsorbent for effective removal of Cd(Ⅱ) and CR were 43.45 and 333.33 mg/g based on Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms displayed the highest values of Q max for CR and Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption in this study, which indicated monolayer adsorption of CR and multilayer adsorption of Cd(II) onto the SGO, respectively. Thermodynamic study showed that the enthalpy( H) and Gibbs free energy( G) values of the adsorption process for both pollutants were negative, suggesting that the process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. This study showed active sites of SGO( π-π, hydroxyl, carboxyl, ketone, silane-based functional groups) contributed to an enormous enhancement in simultaneous removal of CR and Cd(Ⅱ) from an aqueous solu-tion, Therefore, SGO can be considered as a promising adsorbent for future water pollution control and removal of hazardous materials from aqueous solutions.

Tankyrase1(TNKS1)plays an essential role in cancer progression by regulating telomere *** study aimed to determine expression of TNKS1 and its regulation in colorectal cancer(CRC)in 20 samples from Saudi *** expression of TNKS1 in CRC and paired normal tissues was measured by *** modification of TNKS1 promoter was determined by methylation-specific PCR while somatic mutation was analyzed by Sanger sequencing in exon 10 of the *** cancerous and normal tissues expressed TNKS1,but level of expression in CRC tissues was significantly associated with tumor stage though no other parameters;age,gender,and tumor location,showed any *** of TNKS1 was markedly higher in earlier(I,II)than in later(Ⅲ,Ⅳ)stages of CRC *** cancerous and healthy tissues had unmethylated *** sequencing of exon 10 masked any somatic mutation in the *** findings suggest that up-regulation of TNKS1 was inversely correlated with cancer progression in CRC,indicating that TNKS1 participates in the initiation of CRC by stabilizing telomere length in the first phase of cancer *** other than TNKS1 might play a role in malignant tumor progression and telomere maintenance in the late stages of CRC.
