Expression of connexin 30 and connexin 32 in hippocampus of rat during epileptogenesis in a kindling model of epilepsy

Objective Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis yields new in- sights into potential therapies that may ultimately prevent epilepsy. Gap junctions （GJs） create direct intercellular conduits between adjacent cells and are formed by hexameric protein subunits called connexins （Cxs）. Changes in the expression of Cxs affect GJ communication and thereby could modulate the dissemination of electrical discharges. The hippocampus is one of the main regions involved in epileptogenesis and has a wide network of GJs between different cell types where Cx30 is expressed in astrocytes and Cx32 exists in neurons and oligodendrocytes. In the present study, we evaluated the changes of Cx30 and Cx32 expression in rat hippocampus during kindling epileptogenesis. Methods Rats were stereotaxically implanted with stimulating and recording electrodes in the basolateral amygdala, which was electrically stimulated once daily at afterdischarge threshold. Expression of Cx30 and Cx32, at both the mRNA and protein levels, was measured in the hippocampus at the beginning, in the middle （after acquisition of focal seizures）, and at the end （after establishment of generalized seizures） of the kindling process, by real-time PCR and Western blot. Results Cx30 mRNA expression was upregulated at the beginning of kindling and after acquisition of focal seizures. Then it was downregulated when the animals acquired generalized seizures. Overexpression of Cx30 mRNA at the start of kindling was consistent with the respective initial protein increase. Thereafter, no change was found in protein abundance during kindling. Regarding Cx32, mRNA expression decreased after acquisition of generalized seizures and no other significant change was detected in mRNA and protein abundance during kindling. Conclusion We speculate that Cx32 GJ communication in the hip- pocampus does not contribute to kindling epileptogenesis. Optimization of total harmonic current distortion and torque pulsation reduction in high-power induction motors using genetic algorithms

This paper presents a powerful application of genetic algorithm (GA) for the minimization of the total harmonic current distortion (THCD) in high-power induction motors fed by voltage source inverters, based on an approximate harmonic model. That is, having defined a desired fundamental output voltage, optimal pulse patterns (switching angles) are determined to produce the fundamental output voltage while minimizing the THCD. The complete results for the two cases of three and five switching instants in the first quarter period of pulse width modulation (PWM) waveform are presented. Presence of harmonics in the stator excitation leads to a pulsing-torque component. Considering the fact that if the pulsing-torques are at low frequencies, they can cause troublesome speed fluctuations, shaft fatigue, and unsatisfactory performance in the feedback control system, the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th current harmonics (in the case of five switching angles) are constrained at some pre-specified values, to mitigate the detrimental effects of low-frequency harmonics. At the same time, the THCD is optimized while the required fundamental output voltage is maintained.

Frequency of fall-related injuries of female patients referred to the trauma center in the city of Kashan from years 2005 to 2008

Abstract：Objective:Falls are one of the life events leading to injury and in serious cases cause high morbidity and mortality.This research was conducted to determine the fall incidence among female population of Kashan city from the years 2005 to 2008.Methods:This was a retrospective research using existing data from the data bank of trauma center of Kashan University of Medical Sciences.Records of all the female patients treated at local hospitals with complete hospitalisation kept at the center were examined for 4 consecutive years from 2005 to 2008.Results:A total of 2 094 female patients' records were examined.A significantly higher incidence of injuy occurred in 2008 compared to 2005 (P＜0.0001).In addition,the highest frequency of injury occurred in age group above 65 years (31.9％)and in group with elementary education level (42.8％).Conclusion:The results showed that fall incidences occurred in the old age group above 65 years.Fall injuries at this age may cause disability.Therefore,preventive measures should be taken,such as increasing the awareness of the aging population about the seriousness of fall incidence and encouraging the aged individuals to get involved in fitness program to remain physical fit and healthy。

The Differences in the Attitudes of Students With and Without Learning Disabilities Towards Including Students With Mild Intellectual Disability in Elementary Regular Schools in Bahrain

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the attitudes of the students with and without learning disabilities(LD)towards including the learners with mild intellectual disability in regular elementary schools.Participants were 120 elementary boys and girls in Bahraini elementary schools.A survey was used here to identify the students’attitudes towards the inclusion of the children with mild intellectual disability in regular schools.The results indicated that:(1)There was a positive attitude among elementary students towards including the children with mild intellectual disability in regular schools;(2)there were statistically significant differences among the students with and without learning disabilities in their attitudes towards including the children with mild intellectual disability in regular elementary schools in favour of the typically developing group;and(3)there were statistically significant differences among the male and female students with and without learning disabilities in their attitudes towards including the children with mild intellectual disability in regular schools in favour of females.

Ground Water in Certain Sites in Egypt and Its Treatments Using a New Modified Ion Exchange Resin—Characterization of Water and Modified Ion Exchange

The present work is a comprehensive of drinking water quality. Eleven groundwater samples were taken from various rural regions of Egypt, the groundwater samples were investigated for chemical, radiometric and heavy metals analyses, the major cations including;sodium ( ), potassium ( ), calcium ( ) and magnesium ( ) ions species, the major anions of chloride ( ), sulphate ( ), nitrite ( ), phosphate ( ). Radiometric analyses in water expressed as the gross alpha and beta activity concentrations, heavy metals analyses including arsenic ( ), lead ( ), cobalt ( ), manganese ( ), iron ( ) and cadmium ( ) ions. The groundwater samples were found to contain high concentrations of heavy metals than the limited values of the world health organization (WHO). Heavy metals speciation were performed using MinteqA2 geochemical code. A modified exchange resin was prepared by polymerization of the condensed dioxalayl p-sulphanilamide with phenol, this ion exchange resin was examined by the different techniques such as;x-ray diffraction, infra red spectra (IR), and electronic microscopic, it was found a good adsorbent material that used for the reduction of heavy metals from contaminated groundwater samples.

泛非构造期后的埃及年轻花岗岩的特点是含有异常放射性。在东部沙漠,这些花岗岩中的几个深成岩体,赋存有许多稀有金属的矿化,其中包括铀。在东部沙漠的中心部分,2个年轻花岗岩深成体,即El Missikat和El Erediya,产有硅质脉型铀矿化。此矿化在构造上受断层和其羽状节理所控制,而这些断层和节理与北东走向和北北东走向的剪切带有关。位于东部沙漠北部的Gattar花岗岩深成体,产有与辉钼矿有关的脉型铀矿化。在东部沙漠的南部,Um Ara花岗岩深成体中赋存有浸染状的不整合接触带型铀矿。沥青铀矿是原生铀矿物,而次生铀矿物主要是:硅钙铀矿、β—硅钙铀矿、硅铀矿和黄磷铅铀矿。在矿化带内还见有与铀矿化有关的少量黄铁矿、黄铜矿、方铅矿、闪锌矿、辉钼矿和紫色萤石。现有资料证实铀矿化为来自花岗岩岩浆的热液成因。广泛的蚀变及部分的硅化作用,可能说明经受雨水循环的再分布。探采结果表明铀矿化带在侧向和深度上延伸的可能性。4个年轻花岗岩深成体的铀远景储量估计为14000t。
