Oral lesions after COVID-19 vaccination:Immune mechanisms and clinical approach

COVID-19 vaccination,although is a promising tool to overcome the pandemic,has side effects.There are in-creasing reports of oral lesions after COVID-19 vaccination.The aim of this review is to identify the occurrence of some oral lesions after COVID-19 vaccination,and highlight the underlying immune mechanisms involved.A narrative literature review was performed by searching electronic databases including PubMed,Scopus and Web of Science to investigate the oral lesions after COVID-19 vaccination.The inclusion criteria were original stud-ies,including the case reports,case series,letter to the editor,and cross-sectional studies.The exclusion criteria included the studies which examined the oral lesions caused by COVID-19 infection.The information,including the number of participant(s)receiving vaccine,type of vaccine,dose number,side effect(s),time of onset fol-lowing vaccination,healing time,treatment strategies for the existing lesions,and related mechanisms were then summarized in a data extraction sheet.The results of this review showed that some vaccines had side effects with oral involvement such as pemphigus vulgaris,bullous pemphigoid,herpes zoster,lichen planus,Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Behçet’s disease.Future research needs to elucidate the physiopathology of oral manifestations after the COVID-19 vaccination,and better understand the risk factors associated with such responses.Sometimes vaccine’s side effects may be due to the nocebo effect,which means that the person expects some adverse events to occur following the vaccine administration.

Suspended particulate matter promotes epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in alveolar epithelial cells via TGF-β1-mediated ROS/IL-8/SMAD3 axis

Epidemiological evidence presents that dust storms are related to respiratory diseases,such as pulmonary fibrosis(PF).However,the precise underlying mechanisms of SPM-elicited adverse effects still need to be investigated.Epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)process is a characteristic of PF.We discussed whether suspended particulate matter(SPM)is involved in EMT induction via transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1).In this study,a detailed elemental analysis(55 elements),particle size,and morphology were determined.To investigate the toxicity of SPM,an MTT test was performed to detect cell viability.Next,A549cells were exposed to selected concentrations of SPM(20 and 40μg/mL)for single and repeated exposures.The DCFH-DA assay showed that exposure to SPM could produce reactive oxygen species(ROS).The ELISA assay demonstrated increased levels of interleukin-8(IL-8)and TGF-β1 in the supernatant.Western blot was used to detect the expression of proteins associated with EMT and the SMAD3-dependent pathway.Results of western blot demonstrated that E-cadherin was reduced,whereas p-SMAD3,vimentin,andα-smooth muscle actin were elevated.Our findings indicated that SPM triggered EMT by induction of oxidative stress,inflammation,and the TGF-β1/SMAD3 pathway activation.

Modeling functional brain connections in methamphetamine and opioid abusers

Substance abuse has become a significant problem worldwide.The primary purpose of this study was to model the functional brain connectivity in methamphetamines(Meth)and opioids(Op)groups in comparison with the healthy control(HC)group.EEG data were recorded in Meth(n=8),Op(n=12),and HC groups(n=12)in a closed-eye resting state.The NeuCube model based on a spiking neural network was used for EEG data's functional brain connectivity modeling.The NeuCube model was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively with model descriptive parameters.The results showed the average value of the neuron's activation level,spikes emitted from neurons,and clustering coefficient as a communication parameter in the HC group decreased from 1154,1103,0.026 to 1036,981,0.020 in the Op group and to 511,468,0.009 in the Meth group,respectively.The changes in indices were significant according to the ANOVA test with p〈0.001.The decrease in indices was more significant in the Meth group than in the Op group.The research findings showed that the abuse of Meth and Op causes damage to the brain's functional connections.The damage included shortening and limiting communication routes and decreased neurons'ability to generate membrane potential and emit inhibitory and excitatory spikes.Injuries were reported to be more severe in the Meth group than in the Op group.

对比研究使用未热解粉末制备的厚热障涂层(UPTTBC)和传统TBC、厚TBC(TTBC)及密集垂直裂纹(DVC)TTBC 4种涂层的隔热能力和黏接强度。采用降温法测试涂层的隔热能力;根据ASTM C633标准,采用拉拔试验检测涂层的黏接强度。结果显示,UPTTBC和DVC TTBC的黏接强度分别比TTBC高35%和25%。这可能是由于UPTTBC结构中存在亚微米尺度的未熔化区域,起到了阻止裂纹扩展的作用。此外,隔热测试的结果表明,DVCTTBC涂层的隔热能力最差,为0.28℃/μm,而UPTTBC涂层的隔热能力最强,为0.40℃/μm。由于UPTTBCs显微组织中存在亚微米区域,使涂层展现出优越的隔热能力。相反,DVCTTBC因其致密的结构,具有最低的隔热能力。

The Gaia DR3 parallax approach was used to estimate the absolute parameters of 2375δScuti stars from the ASAS catalog.The selected stars have a variety of observational characteristics,with a higher than 80%probability of beingδScuti stars.We have displayed all the stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram along with theδScuti instability strip,the Zero Age Main Sequence and the Terminal Age Main Sequence.Then,we determined which fundamental and overtone modes each star belongs to using pulsation constant(Q)calculations.In addition,we evaluated the parameters in the Q calculation equation using three machine learning methods,which showed that surface gravity and temperature have the greatest effect on its calculation.The Period-Luminosity(P-L)relationship of theδScuti stars was also revisited.Eventually,using least squares linear regression,we made four linear fits for fundamental and overtone modes and updated their relationships.

Despite modern medicine’s advancements,age-related neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease remain challenging due to high costs,side effects,and limited accessibility.Ayurveda,a traditional Indian medicine system,offers Kadha tea as a potential herbal option.This review explores Kadha’s components(basil(Ocimum basilicum L.),black pepper(Piper nigrum L.),Cinnamon(Cinnamomum verum J.Presl),ginger(Zingiber officinale Roscoe),and raisin(Vitis vinifera L.))and their interaction with various neurological disorders.Studies suggest Kadha exhibits anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antiviral properties,potentially impacting Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,neurotoxicity,neuroinflammation,and brain trauma.By focusing on specific disease mechanisms and Kadha’s intergrade effects,this review aims to elucidate its potential role in managing age-related neurological disorders.

Strengthening of reinforced concrete beams using fiberreinforced cementitious matrix systems fabricated with custom-designed mortar and fabrics

The performance of a new fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix(FRCM)system developed using custom-designed mortar and fabrics is investigated in this study.The behavior of this system is evaluated in terms of both the flexural and shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams.Eight beams are designed to assess the effectiveness of the FRCM system in terms of flexural strengthening,and four specimens are designed to investigate their shear behavior.The parameters investigated for flexural strengthening are the number of layers,span/depth ratio,and the strengthening method.Unlike previous studies,custom fabrics with similar axial stiffness are used in all strengthening methods in this study.In the shear-strengthened specimens,the effects of the span/depth ratio and strengthening system type(fiberreinforced polymer(FRP)or FRCM)are investigated.The proposed FRCM system exhibits desirable flexural and shear strengthening for enhancing the load capacity,provides sufficient bonding with the substrate,and prevents premature failure modes.Considering the similar axial stiffness of fabrics used in both FRCM and FRP systems and the higher load capacity of specimens strengthened by the former,cement-based mortar performs better than epoxy.

Application of Statistical Methods to Biomarkers for Geochemical Evaluation and Genetic Type Determination of Gas Condensates in the Persian Gulf and Coastal Fars,Southern Iran

In a comprehensive geochemical study,the genetic relationships among 14 samples of gas condensates from the Persian Gulf were investigated for the purpose of evaluating the respective source rocks in terms of both age and sedimentary paleoenvironment.Chemometric analysis was used for categorization and determination of a certitude range to determine the genetic type of the condensate families in the studied basin.The samples were collected from Late Permian-Triassic reservoirs(Dalan and Kangan formations)located in 6 gasfields(gas condensate)hosting some of Iran’s most important gas/gas condensate reserves.Obtained by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),a total of 16 biomarker parameters(10 maturity-related parameters and 6 sedimentary environment-related parameters)were used to evaluate the samples in terms of thermal maturity(and hence their positions in the maturity chart),the sedimentary environment of the source rock and the lithology.Application of Hierarchical Clustering Analysis(HCA)and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)to the collected data led to the categorization of the samples into three main genetic groups,Ⅰ-Ⅲ.GroupsⅠandⅢwere found to be located in the east and the west of the Persian Gulf,respectively,while GroupⅡwas developed between the two other groups.

Molecular design and applications of a nanostructure green Tripodal surface active ionic liquid in enhanced oil recovery: Interfacial tension reduction, wettability alteration, and emulsification

Surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) are considered as prominent materials in enhanced oil recovery thanks to their high interfacial activity. This study reports the preparation and applications of a nanostructure Tripodal imidazolium SAIL as an environmentally-friendly substitute to the conventional surfactants. The product has a star-like molecular structure centered by a triazine spacer, namely [(C_(4)im)_(3)TA][Cl_(3)], prepared by a one-step synthesis method and characterized with FT-IR, NMR, XRD, and SEM analysis methods. The interfacial tension of the system was decreased to about 78% at critical micelle concentration of less than 0.08 mol·dm^(−3). Increasing temperature, from 298.2 to 323.2 K, improved this capability. The solid surface wettability was changed from oil-wet to water-wet and 80% and 77% stable emulsions of crude oil–aqueous solutions were created after one day and one week, respectively. Compared to the Gemini kind homologous SAILs, the superior effects of the Tripodal SAIL were revealed and attributed to the strong hydrophobic branches in the molecule. The Frumkin adsorption isotherm precisely reproduced the generated IFT data, and accordingly, the adsorption and thermodynamic parameters were determined.

Assessment of Different Optimization Algorithms for a Thermal Conduction Problem

In this study,three computational approaches for the optimization of a thermal conduction problem are critically compared.These include a Direct Method(DM),a Genetic Algorithm(GA),and a Pattern Search(PS)technique.The optimization aims to minimize the maximum temperature of a hot medium(a medium with uniform heat generation)using a constant amount of high conductivity materials(playing the role of fixed factor constraining the considered problem).The principal goal of this paper is to determine the most efficient and fastest option among the considered ones.It is shown that the examined three methods approximately lead to the same result in terms of maximum tem-perature.However,when the number of optimization variables is low,the DM is the fastest one.An increment in the complexity of the design and the number of degrees of freedom(DOF)can make the DM impractical.Results also show that the PS algorithm becomes faster than the GA as the number of variables for the optimization rises.
