It has previously been shown that Dendrostellera lessertii（Thymelaeaceae）has stronganticancer *** this study,the antileukemic activity of another new compound from the same plantextract is ***（NB4 and HL-60）and erythroleukemia（K562）cells were cultured in thepresence of various concentrations of the new compound（0.5-3.0 μtg/ml）for *** cell numbers werethen determined by trypan blue exclusion *** new compound inhibited growth and proliferation ofNB4,HL-60 and K562 with IC50values of 1.5,2.0 and 2.5μg/ml,*** also found that the newcompound inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-and time-dependent *** low concentrations and after48h of treatment,approximately 50%-70% of NB4 and HL-60 cells were differentiated to monocyte/macrophage lineage and approximately 30%-40% of the treated K562 cells were differentiated in the mega-karyocytic lineage,as evidenced by morphological changes and nitro blue tetrazolium reduction *** of Hoechst 33258 staining also indicated that the new compound induced NB4 and HL-60 cellapoptosis at their respective IC50values after 72h of *** on the present data,the new com-pound seems a good candidate for further evaluation as an effective chemotherapeutic agent acting throughinduction of differentiation and apoptosis.

A new method is developed to derive equilibrium equations of Metal-Ceramic beams based on first order shear deformation plate theory which is named first order shear deformation beam theory2(FSDBT2). Equilibrium equations obtained from conventional method (FSDBT1) is compared with FSDBT2 and the case of cylindrical bending of Metal-Ceramic composite plates for non-linear thermomechanical deformations and various loadings and boundary conditions. These equations are solved by using three different methods (analytical, perturbation technique and finite element solution). The through-thickness variation of the volume fraction of the ceramic phase in a Metal-Ceramic beam is assumed to be given by a power-law type function. The non-linear strain-displacement relations in the von-Kármán sense are used to study the effect of geometric non-linearity. Also, four other representative averaging estimation methods, the linear rule, Mori-Tanaka, Self-Consistent and Wakashima-Tsukamoto schemes, by comparing with the power-law type function are also investigated. Temperature distribution through the thickness of the beams in thermal loadings is obtained by solving the one-dimensional heat transfer equation. Finally it is concluded that for Metal-Ceramic composites, these two theories result in identical static responses. Also the displacement field and equilibrium equations in the case of cylindrical bending of Metal-Ceramic plates are the same as those supposed in FSDBT2.

The oxidative desulfurization(ODS) process is one of the new desulfurization processes for the production of clean fuels. Despite the benefits of the ODS process, this process faces several important challenges. One of the most important challenges of this process is the management of a waste which is rich of sulfone *** the present study, a new strategy which is the addition of waste to the bitumen with other solid waste such as high density polyethylene(HDPE) waste has been investigated. The experimental design method was applied to investigate the effect of addition of the sulfone and HDPE wastes to the properties of the bitumen blends including degree of penetration, softening point, and mass loss. It was found that the sulfone waste can be added to the bitumen as a softener. The results showed that several grades of bitumen including 50/60, 60/70, 85/100 can be produced through the addition of sulfone waste along with the HDPE waste to the base 60/70 *** general, the application of simple processes such as mixing the wastes with the bitumen can reduce the cost of waste management, considerably.

A laboratory study of stress arching around an inclusion due to pore pressure changes

When the pore pressure in a porous rock changes, stress arching will occur within the rock and the surrounding region. Stress arching ratio is defined as the total stress changes in the porous rock to the pore pressure change in the region. The region may have the same or different elastic moduli with the surrounding rock, which is usually referred to as inclusion or inhomogeneity. Stress arching is responsible for many geomechanical problems encountered during production or injection; in addition, it is a crucial parameter in stress estimation during field development. This paper aims to present laboratory measurements of vertical stress arching ratio in a material surrounding the inclusion(inhomogeneity).To the authors’ knowledge, few laboratory experiments have been reported on direct measurement of stress arching. The inclusion is a cylindrical sandstone(44 mm in diameter and 50 mm in height)embedded in a larger cylindrical sandstone(150 mm in diameter and 154 mm in height), both of which are made synthetically. These two parts are separated and sealed by a internal polyurethane *** stress changes are recorded by a mini hydraulic sensor embedded in surrounding rock. Laboratory results are compared to those obtained by numerical models. These models are checked with analytical formulations. The results of numerical models show a good agreement with laboratory *** numerical results also indicate that the sensor response is affected by elastic properties of the internal sleeve. According to the sensitivity analysis performed, in the absence of the internal sleeve,properties of the inclusion have significant effects on the surrounding stress arching induced.

Numerical analysis of confinement effect on crack propagation mechanism from a flaw in a pre-cracked rock under compression

In many situations rocks are subjected to biaxial loading and the failure process is controlled by the lateral confinement stresses. The importance of confinement stresses has been recognized in the literature by many researchers, in particular, its influence on strength and on the angle of fracture, but still there is not a clear description for the influence of confining stress on the crack propagation mechanism of rocks. This paper presents a numerical pro- cedure for the analysis of crack propagation in rock-like ma- terials under compressive biaxial loads. Several numerical simulations of biaxial tests on the rock specimen have been carried out by a bonded particle model （BPM） and the influ- ence of confinement on the mechanism of crack propagation from a single flaw in rock specimens is studied. For this purpose, several biaxial compressive tests on rectangular spec- imens under different confinement stresses were modeled in （2 dimensional particle flow code） PFC2D. The results show that wing cracks initiate perpendicular to the flaw and trend toward the direction of major stress, however, when the lat- eral stresses increase, this initiation angle gets wider. Also it is concluded that in addition to the material type, the initiation direction of the secondary cracks depends on confine- ment stresses, too. Besides, it is understood that secondary cracks may be produced from both tensile and shear mechanisms.

Fusarium wilt of melon, Fusarium oxysporum ***. melonis is one of the most important diseases, causing tremendous losses in melon growing areas in Iran. There is a real need for a rapid and inexpensive assay to facilitate accurate disease diagnosis and surveillance for better management of Fusarium wilt outbreaks. One of the procedures designed for detection of this disease is loop-mediated isothermal amplification(LAMP)assay; its efficiency has been contrasted with polymerase chain reaction(PCR). The translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene is basically used for designing the LAMP(i.e. F3, B3, FIP, and BIP) together with PCR(F and B). Using hydroxynaphthol blue(HNB) dye, LAMP was placed in a water bath after the optimization was done. The results show LAMP is an advantageous method because it is highly sensitive(100-fold), quite cheap,user-friendly, and safe; in addition, it is performed quickly by visual detection and does not require DNA extraction(in direct-LAMP). The LAMP is believed to be a simple and reliable tool for laboratory purposes because it needs only very basic instruments and the results can be observed and contrasted visually.

The seismic behavior of horizontally curved bridges,particularly with unequal height piers,is more complicated than that of straight bridges due to their geometric *** this study,the seismic responses of several horizontally curved single-column-bent viaducts with various degrees of curvature and different pier heights have been investigated,employing three different analysis approaches:namely,modal pushover analysis,uniform load method,and nonlinear time history *** the investigated bridge configurations and utilizing the most common regularity indices,the results indicate that viaducts with 45-degree and 90-degree deck subtended angles can be categorized as regular and moderately irregular,respectively,while the bridges with 180-degree deck subtended angle are found to be highly ***,the viaducts whose pier heights are asymmetric may be considered as irregular for almost all ranges of the deck subtended *** effects of higher transverse and longitudinal modes are discussed and the minimum analysis requirements are identified to assess the seismic response of such bridge configurations for design *** the Regularity Indices used here are useful tools to distinguish between regular and irregular bridges,further studies are needed to improve their reliability.

·AIM:To identify various risk factors that may play a significant role in the development of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction(CNLDO).·METHODS:This observational case-control study included a case group of 122 children less than two years of age with CNLDO who underwent probing and irrigation treatment at the ophthalmology department of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ahvaz,Iran,from June 2022 to June2024.A control group of 122 age-matched children without CNLDO was also included for *** was collected from the children's medical records.·RESULTS:The study found a significant correlation between the occurrence of CNLDO and several maternal factors,such as preeclampsia,the use of levothyroxine,hypothyroidism,having more than three pregnancies(gravidity>3),natural pregnancy,and gestational diabetes ***,in children,factors,such as oxygen therapy,anemia,reflux,jaundice,and a family history of CNLDO in first-degree relatives were associated with CNLDO,and maternal preeclampsia and hypothyroidism were found to significantly increase the risk of developing CNLDO in children.·CONCLUSION:Given that CNLDO affects both premature and full-term children,the present findings may potentially facilitate the early identification of children and infants at risk of nasolacrimal duct obstruction,thereby preventing the onset of chronic dacryocystitis.

Enhanced removal of nitrate and phosphate from wastewater by Chlorella vulgaris: Multi-objective optimization and CFD simulation

To enhance the efficiency of wastewater biotreatment with microalgae, the effects of physical parameters need to be investigated and optimized. In this regard, the individual and interactive effects of temperature, p H and aeration rate on the performance of biological removal of nitrate and phosphate by Chlorella vulgaris were studied by response surface methodology(RSM). Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization technique was applied to the response equations to simultaneously find optimal combinations of input parameters capable of removing the highest possible amount of nitrate and phosphate. The optimal calculated values were temperature of 26.3 °C, pH of 8 and aeration rate of 4.7 L·min^(-1). Interestingly, under the optimum condition, approximately 85% of total nitrate and 77% of whole phosphate were removed after 48 h and 24 h, respectively, which were in excellent agreement with the predicted values. Finally, the effect of baffle on mixing performance and, as a result, on bioremoval efficiency was investigated in Stirred Tank Photobioreactor(STP) by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Flow behavior indicated substantial enhancement in mixing performance when the baffle was inserted into the tank. Obtained simulation results were validated experimentally. Under the optimum condition, due to proper mixing in baffled STP, nitrate and phosphate removal increased up to 93% and 86%,respectively, compared to unbaffled one.
