Robust design of sliding mode control for airship trajectory tracking with uncertainty and disturbance estimation

The robotic airship can provide a promising aerostatic platform for many potential applications.These applications require a precise autonomous trajectory tracking control for airship.Airship has a nonlinear and uncertain dynamics.It is prone to wind disturbances that offer a challenge for a trajectory tracking control design.This paper addresses the airship trajectory tracking problem having time varying reference path.A lumped parameter estimation approach under model uncertainties and wind disturbances is opted against distributed parameters.It uses extended Kalman filter(EKF)for uncertainty and disturbance estimation.The estimated parameters are used by sliding mode controller(SMC)for ultimate control of airship trajectory tracking.This comprehensive algorithm,EKF based SMC(ESMC),is used as a robust solution to track airship trajectory.The proposed estimator provides the estimates of wind disturbances as well as model uncertainty due to the mass matrix variations and aerodynamic model inaccuracies.The stability and convergence of the proposed method are investigated using the Lyapunov stability analysis.The simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently tracks the desired trajectory.The method solves the stability,convergence,and chattering problem of SMC under model uncertainties and wind disturbances.

Let P be a complex polynomial of the form P （z）=（λz-a）mΠj=1n-m（z-zj）,where|zj|≥1,1≤j≤n-m.The aim of this paper is to obtain generalisation of a result due to Zargar and Manzoor and a result due to Mir,Nazir and Wani.We shall also obtain an interesting bound which contains the zeros of the second derivative of P （z）.

The massive number of sensors deployed in the Internet of Things(IoT)produce gigantic amounts of data for facilitating a wide range of applications.Deep Learning(DL)would undoubtedly play a role in generating valuable inferences from this massive volume of data and hence will assist in creating smarter IoT.In this regard,exploring the potential of DL for IoT data analytics becomes highly crucial.This paper begins with a concise discussion on the Deep Neural Network(DNN)and its different architectures.The potential benefits that DL will bring to the IoT are also discussed.Then,a detailed review of DL-driven IoT use-cases is presented.Moreover,this paper formulates a DL-based model for Human Activity Recognition(HAR).It carries out a performance comparison of the proposed model with other machine learning techniques to delineate the superiority of the DL model over other techniques.Apart from enlightening the potential of DL in IoT applications,this paper will serve as an impetus to encourage advanced research in the realm of DL-driven IoT applications.

Ethics Aware Object Oriented Smart City Architecture

A novel initiative in providing advanced civic amenities is the idea of smart city driven by the Internet of Things. Owing to a lack of consensus regarding what constitutes a smart city,diverse smart city architectures have been proposed. However,it is observed that adequate consideration is not given to the most important element of a smart city i.e. its people. In our opinion,energy efficient technologically driven city does not necessarily lead to a smart city. Ethics,tradition and law form essential ingredients of complex social palette that cannot be ignored. In this work we propose Ethics-Aware Object-Oriented Smart City Architecture(EOSCA)that has two distinguishing features. Firstly,we propose an object oriented layered architecture where an object represents an abstraction of a real world thing along with requisite security and ethics parameters. Secondly,we propose to integrate socio-cultural and ethical aspects within the smart city architecture by dedicating a separate ethics layer. Such enhancement not only addresses the challenge of privacy and security of a smart city,but also makes it people friendly by incorporating ethics. Such measures would facilitate social acceptance of smart city paradigm and augment its economic value.

Adaptive task scheduling in IoT using reinforcement learning

Purpose-The intelligence in the Internet of Things(IoT)can be embedded by analyzing the huge volumes of data generated by it in an ultralow latency environment.The computational latency incurred by the cloud-only solution can be significantly brought down by the fog computing layer,which offers a computing infrastructure to minimize the latency in service delivery and execution.For this purpose,a task scheduling policy based on reinforcement learning(RL)is developed that can achieve the optimal resource utilization as well as minimum time to execute tasks and significantly reduce the communication costs during distributed execution.Design/methodology/approach-To realize this,the authors proposed a two-level neural network(NN)-based task scheduling system,where the first-level NN(feed-forward neural network/convolutional neural network[FFNN/CNN])determines whether the data stream could be analyzed(executed)in the resourceconstrained environment(edge/fog)or be directly forwarded to the cloud.The second-level NN(RL module)schedules all the tasks sent by level 1 NN to fog layer,among the available fog devices.This real-time task assignment policy is used to minimize the total computational latency(makespan)as well as communication costs.Findings-Experimental results indicated that the RL technique works better than the computationally infeasible greedy approach for task scheduling and the combination of RL and task clustering algorithm reduces the communication costs significantly.Originality/value-The proposed algorithm fundamentally solves the problem of task scheduling in realtime fog-based IoT with best resource utilization,minimum makespan and minimum communication cost between the tasks.

The Internet of Things promises to offer numerous societal benefits by providing a spectrum of user applications. However, ethical ramifications of adopting such pervasive technology on a society-wide scale have not been adequately considered. Smart things endowed with artificial intelligence may carry out decisions that entail ethical consequences. It is assumed that the functioning of a smart device does not involve any ethical responsibility vis-a-vis its application context. Such a perspective may precipitate situations that endanger essential human values or cause physical or emotional harm. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the design of ethics within intelligent systems to safeguard human interests. In order to address these concerns, we propose a novel method based on Boolean algebra that enables a machine to exhibit varying ethical behaviour by employing the concept of ethics categories and ethics modes. Such enhancement of smart things offers a way to design ethically compliant smart devices and paves way for human friendly technology ecosystems.

Investigation of material composition,design,and performance of open-graded asphalt mixtures for semi-flexible pavement:A comprehensive experimental study

The primary goal of this study is the design and construction of semi-flexible pavement(SFP)mixture in accordance with the engineering and mechanical criteria.This study involves the use of a range of gradation curves,air void contents,cellulose and synthesized fibers,and neat and modified asphalt binders to prepare the open-graded asphalt(OGA)mixtures.To analyze the characteristics of these mixtures,a variety of test,namely binder drainage,semi-circular bending(SCB),Cantabro,wheel tracking,indirect tensile strength(ITS),and permeability tests were conducted.Additionally,to analyze the prepared grouting material,flexural strength,compressive strength,and fluidity tests were conducted.In the final stage,SFP was compared to HMA in terms of engineering characteristics and performance.According to the results,SFP was more resistant to skid,rutting,fire,and moisture damage,while HMA had a better performance in fracture tests,including SCB test.According to the results of the mechanical performance tests conducted on OGA mixtures,the highest and lowest values for air void content to achieve the highest mechanical performance level were 30%-35%and 25%,respectively.Also,based on the laboratory results,it was determined that the required void ratio for constructing OGA mixtures was 24%-26%based on the bitumen type and fibers amount in the mixture.Finally,SFP mixture can be regarded as a viable alternative to common pavements thanks to its high resistance to rutting and moisture damage,long freezing-thawing fatigue life,and adequate fire and skid resistance.

Ultrasensitive plasmonic sensor based on MDM waveguide containing Persian Orsi window cavities for refractive index and blood plasma sensing

We developed a plasmonic refractive index（RI） with a metal-dielectric-metal（MDM） structure that utilizes two Persian Orsi windows-like separated cavities with a high figure of merit（FoM） and ultrasensitivity. The simulated and optimized Ag-air-Ag MDM sensor for surface plasmon resonance（SPR） offers high RI sensitivity（SRI） and the ability to detect blood plasma concentration（BPC）. The results verified that structural parameters have an effect on SRI, full width at half maximum（FWHM）, FoM, sensitivity of blood plasma（Sp） for right and left peaks, whose values are 1 345.45 nm·RIU-1, 32 nm, 42.04 RIU-1, 0.26 and 0.19 nm·L·g-1, respectively. The proposed design opens a new horizon in sensor development.

Recent Progress in Bionic Hydrogels for Articular Cartilage:Tribological and Mechanical Characteristics

Cartilage regeneration and repair are considered clinical challenges since cartilage has limited capability for reconstruction.Although tissue-engineered materials have the ability to repair cartilage,they have weak mechanical characteristics and cannot resist long-term overload.On the other hand,surgery to replace the joint is frequently done to treat significant cartilage deterioration these days.However,the materials that are being used for replacement have high friction coefficients,lack shock absorption functions,and lack cushioning.Further research on natural articular cartilage structure and function may lead to bionic hydrogels,which have suitable physicochemical and biological characteristics(e.g.,tribological and mechanical properties and the ability to support loadbearing capability),but need improvements.Based on their tribological and mechanical characteristics,the current review highlights the most recent advancements of bionic hydrogels used for articular cartilage,highlighting both the field's recent progress and its potential for future research.For this reason,firstly,some important property improvement methods of bionic hydrogels are discussed and then,the recent findings of various research on the making of those bionic materials are provided and compared.It seems that by using some modifications such as product design,surface treatments,animal tests,controlling the isoelectric point of hydrogels,and computer simulation,the intended mechanical and tribological characteristics of natural articular cartilage may be attained by the bionic hydrogels.
