Safety and efficacy of posterior sub-Tenon＇s carboplatin injection versus intravitreal melphalan therapy in the management of retinoblastoma with secondary vitreous seeds

AIM： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of posterior sub-Tenon＇s carboplatin injection compared to intravitreal melphalan injection in the management of retinoblastoma （RB） with secondary vitreous seeds. The outcome measures were vitreous seeds regression, need for other treatment modalities to achieve ocular salvage and treatment side effects. METHODS： A prospective interventional comparative nonrandomized study included RB eyes developed secondary vitreous seeds during the period of follow up. They subdivided into two groups： study group Ⅰ where posterior sub-Tenon＇s carboplatin （20 mg/2 mL） was injected and study group Ⅱ where intravitreal melphalan （20 μg/0.1 mL） was injected. The injections repeated every 2-4wk. RESULTS： Thirty-three eyes were included in the study. Seventeen eyes （16 patients） in study group Ⅰ and 16 eyes （16 patients） in study group Ⅱ. Ten eyes （30.3%） were completely salvaged following local chemotherapies, Ocular salvage was 23.5% following posterior sub-Tenon＇s carboplatin injection versus 37.5% following intravitreal melphalan raised to 47.1% and 75% with addition of external beam radiotherapy （EBR） with no statistically significant difference between the study groups （P=0.16）. A statistically significant correlation was found between ocular salvage rate and type of vitreous seeds either dust, spheres and clouds （r=0.42, P=-0.015） and eyes harbor new solid tumor growth （r=0.35, P=0.045）. The mean and median follow up periods following local chemotherapy injections were 2.0y in the study group Ⅰand 2.37y in the study group Ⅱ. Few complications were reported： periorbital edema in all eyes and ocular motility disturbances in 13 eyes （76.5%） following posterior sub-Tenon＇s carboplatin injection. Vitreous hemorrhage developed in 2 eyes （12.5%） and localized retinopathy in 5 eyes （31.25%） following intravitreal melphalan. ~ CONCLUSION： Local chemotherapy for treatment of RB with secondary vitreous seeds is safe and can salvage 30.3% of eyes

The zero-inertia model is widely used for simulating surface flow in irrigation *** model is accurate when inflow discharge is ***,simulation of irrigation systems with rapidly varied inflow discharge is needed due to the development of real time control irrigation ***,the objective of this study is to validate the zero-inertia model with rapidly varied inflow *** this purpose,twenty-three border irrigation tests at a range of inflow changes on different field slopes and roughness coefficients were ***,the sensitivity analyses of bed slope,infiltration parameters,and roughness coefficient were *** results indicate that the zero-inertia model predictions are in good agreement with field data in both advance/recession times and flow *** infiltration parameters were the most sensitive input variable of the zero-inertia *** input variables have a more considerable impact on the recession phase than the advance phase.

In power plants,flue gases can cause severe corrosion damage in metallic parts such as flue ducts,heat exchangers,and *** is an effective technique to prevent this damage.A robust fuzzy model of the surface roughness(Ra and Rz)of flue gas ducts coated by protective composite coating from epoxy and nanoparticles was constructed based on the experimental *** proposed model consists of four nanoparticles(ZnO,ZrO2,SiO2,and NiO)with 2%,4%,6%,and 8%,*** surface methodology(RSM)was used to optimize the process parameters and identify the optimal conditions for minimum surface roughness of this coated *** prove the superiority of the proposed fuzzy model,the model results were compared with those obtained by ANOVA,with the coefficient of determination and the root-mean-square error(RMSE)used as *** Ra,for the first output response,using ANOVA,the coefficient-of-determination values were 0.9137 and 0.4037,respectively,for training and ***,for Rz,the second output response,the coefficient-of-determination results were 0.9695 and 0.4037,respectively,for training and *** the fuzzy modeling of Ra,for the first output response,the RMSE values were 0.0 and 0.1455,respectively,for training and *** values for the coefficient of determination were 1.00 and 0.9807,respectively,for training and *** results prove the superiority of fuzzy *** modeling the second output response Rz,the RMSE values were 0.0 and 0.0421,respectively,for training and testing,and the coefficient-of-determination values were 1.00 and 0.9959,respectively,for training and testing.

Multiphysics simulation of VVER-1200 fuel performance during normal operating conditions

Nuclear fuel performance modeling and simulation are critical tasks for nuclear fuel design optimization and safety analysis under normal and transient *** performance is a complicated phenomenon that involves thermal,mechanical,and irradiation mechanisms and requires special multiphysics *** this study,a fuel performance model was developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics *** modeling was performed for a 2D axis-symmetric geometry of a UO2fuel pellet in the E110 clad for VVER-1200 *** modeling considers all relevant phenomena,including heat generation and conduction,gap heat transfer,elastic strain,mechanical contact,thermal expansion,grain growth,densification,fission gas generation and release,fission product swelling,gap/plenum pressure,and cladding thermal and irradiation *** model was validated using a code-to-code evaluation of the fuel pellet centerline and surface temperatures in the case of constant power,in addition to validation of fission gas release(FGR)*** prediction proved that the model could perform according to previously published VVER nuclear fuel performance parameters.A sensitivity study was also conducted to assess the effects of uncertainty on some of the model *** model was then used to predict the VVER-1200 fuel performance parameters as a function of burnup,including the temperature profiles,gap width,fission gas release,and plenum pressure.A compilation of related material and thermomechanical models was conducted and included in the modeling to allow the user to investigate different material/performance *** the model was developed for normal operating conditions,it can be modified to include off-normal operating conditions.

Modeling interaction between CO_(2),brine and chalk reservoir rock including temperature effect on petrophysical properties

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))capture and sequestration through CO_(2)enhanced oil recovery(EOR)in oil reservoirs is one of the approaches considered to reduce CO_(2)emission into the *** injection of CO_(2)into a subsurface geological formation may lead to chemical reactions that may affect the formation pore structure and *** this study,the effect of CO_(2)ebrineerock interaction on the rock petrophysical properties and mineral volume fraction was numerically investigated during CO_(2)injection into a chalk reservoir rock.A 3D numerical modeling and simulation were conducted using COMSOL®Multiphysics commercial software of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)to simulate CO_(2)ebrine core flooding process in a chalk *** model was validated against a coreescale experimental data from *** differential pressure data matched the literature experimental data closely and consistently indicating good agreement between *** effect on the performance of CO_(2)ebrineechalk sequestration was also evaluated in the present *** indicated that porosity was only slightly affected by temperature increase during CO_(2)injection in contrast to permeability that was substantially affected by ***,chemical reactions enhanced as temperature increased leading to significant increase in ***,carbonated brine sequestration excelled at elevated temperature due to increased acidity which governs the sequestration *** developed model maybe considered as a reliable tool to optimize various operating parameters of CO_(2)ebrine sequestration.

We develop a family of characteristic discontinuous Galerkin methods for transient advection-diffusion equations,including the characteristic NIPG,OBB,IIPG,and SIPG *** derived schemes possess combined advantages of EulerianLagrangian methods and discontinuous Galerkin *** optimal-order error estimate in the L2 norm and a superconvergence estimate in a weighted energy norm are proved for the characteristic NIPG,IIPG,and SIPG *** experiments are presented to confirm the optimal-order spatial and temporal convergence rates of these schemes as proved in the theorems and to show that these schemes compare favorably to the standard NIPG,OBB,IIPG,and SIPG schemes in the context of advection-diffusion equations.

Roscovitine synergizes with conventional chemo-therapeutic drugs to induce efficient apoptosis of human colorectal cancer cells

AIM: To examine the ability of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKI) roscovitine (Rosco) to enhance the antitumor effects of conventional chemotherapeutic agents acting by different mechanisms against human colorectal cancer. METHODS: Human colorectal cancer cells were treat-ed, individually and in combination, with Rosco, taxol, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), doxorubicine or vinblastine. The antiproliferative effects and the type of interaction of Rosco with tested chemotherapeutic drugs were de-termined. Cell cycle alterations were investigated by fluorescence-activated cell sorter FACS analysis. Apop-tosis was determined by DNA fragmentation assay. RESULTS: Rosco inhibited the proliferation of tumor cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The ef-ficacies of all tested chemotherapeutic drugs were markedly enhanced 3.0-8.42 × 103 and 130-5.28 × 103 fold in combination with 5 and 10 μg/mL Rosco, re-spectively. The combination of Rosco and chemothera-peutic drugs inhibited the growth of human colorectal cancer cells in an additive or synergistic fashion, and in a time and dose dependent manner. Rosco induced apoptosis and synergized with tested chemothera-peutic drugs to induce efficient apoptosis in human colorectal cancer cells. Sequential, inverted sequential and simultaneous treatment of cancer cells with combi-nations of chemotherapeutic drugs and Rosco arrested the growth of human colorectal cancer cells at various phases of the cell cycle as follows: Taxol/Rosco (G2/M-and S-phases), 5-FU/Rosco (S-phase), Dox/Rosco (S-phase) and Vinb/Rosco (G2/M-and S-phases). CONCLUSION: Since the eff icacy of many anticancer drugs depends on their ability to induce apoptotic cell death, modulation of this parameter by cell cycle inhibi-tors may provide a novel chemo-preventive and chemo-therapeutic strategy for human colorectal cancer.

A systematic fuzzy approach is developed to model fuzziness and uncertainties in the preferences of decision makers involved in a conflict. This unique fuzzy preference formulation is used within the paradigm of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution in which a given dispute is modeled in terms of decision makers, each decision maker＇s courses of actions or options, and each decision maker＇s preferences concerning the states or outcomes which could take place. In order to be able to determine the stability of each state for each decision maker and the possible equilibria or resolutions, a range of solution concepts describing potential human behavior under conflict are defined for use with fuzzy preferences. More specifically, strong and weak definitions of stability are provided for the solution concepts called Nash, general metarational, symmetric metarational, and sequential stability. To illustrate how these solution concepts can be conveniently used in practice, they are applied to a dispute over the contamination of an aquifer by a chemical company located in Elmira, Ontario, Canada.

Seasonal variations in serum pregnancy associated glycoproteins during early pregnancy in Aardi goats in central Saudi Arabia

Objective:To accurately detect pregnancy in local Aardi goats of Saudi Arabia before day 30 of pregnancy by using serum caprine pregnancy associated glycoproteins (caPAG) concentrations and to evaluate the effects of heat stress on early pregnancy and on caPAG concentrations in pregnant and non-pregnant ***:This study was to confirm the reliability of our methods in different seasons of the year. A new protocol to evaluate and improve Aardi goats' reproductive performance was implemented during summer and winter months. A total of 60 healthy mature Aardi goats were used (30 and 30 in the summer and winter, respectively). all were synchronized using an ovsynch protocol and then naturally mated (NM) to mature tested bucks. Conception rates and caPAG were measured and pregnancy was verified by ***:Regardless of season, however, on day 23 and 35 post-NM, caPAGs were higher in sera of pregnant (Pal differences. The modified ovsynch program can be advantageous and worthwhile for its ease of use. When we add the accuracy of caPAG tests, such a program will help in detecting pregnancies in Aardi goats as early as 23 days post-NM, regardless of the season.
