Drug Utilization in Homes for the Aged in Brasilia, Brazil

This paper aims to describe the socioeconomic and epidemiological profile, as well as the standards of medicine consumption in a group of 154 elderly people from five homes for the aged in Brasilia, in order to expand the understanding about some characteristics and individual needs of this population and its influence on the quality of drug’s therapy. Data were collected between January and December of 2007, it was used a questionnaire adapted from Dader’s method (2002) and a pharmacotherapeutic follow up method and it was responded by the elders and caregivers. Data were supplemented with information from medical records and prescriptions available in the institutions. The studied group has an average age of 74.6 years, living in their current homes for about 5.4 years and the group consists mainly of men with preserved cognitive status. The members of the group have low monthly income, low education level and are sedentary. They consume 4 - 5 drugs and are affected mainly by cardiovascular and psychiatric diseases. Results suggest that low monthly income, low education level, the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle, elders with compromised cognitive status, the increasing number of chronic diseases and the high consumption of drugs in the researched group may be important factors for the emergence or injury drugs-related problems (DRP) as non-adherence to treatment, medication errors, drug interactions and adverse drug reactions compromising the quality of medication therapy. This study points out the necessity of including a pharmacotherapeutic follow-up for the elderly people in order to minimize such problems and provide better quality of life for patients.

Prognostic factors in patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma: Role of surgery, chemotherapy and body mass index

AIM： To study the factors that may affect survival of cholangiocarcinoma in Lebanon. METHODS： A retrospective review of the medical records of 55 patients diagnosed with cholangio- carcinoma at the American University of Beirut between 1990 and 2005 was conducted. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the impact of surgery, chemotherapy, body mass index, bilirubin level and other factors on survival. RJ^SULTS： The median survival of all patients was 8.57 mo （0.03-105.2）. Univariate analysis showed that low bilirubin level （〈 10 mg/dL）, radical surgery and chemotherapy administration were significantly associated with better survival （P = 0.012, 0.038 and 0.038, respectively）, in subgroup analysis on patients who had no surgery, chemotherapy administration prolonged median survival significantly （17.0 mo vs 3.5 mo, P = 0.001）. Multivariate analysis identified only low bilirubin level 〈 10 mg/dL and chemotherapy administration as independent predictors associated with better survival （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Our data show that palliative and postoperative chemotherapy as well as a bilirubin level 〈 10 mg/dL are independent predictors of a significant increase in survival in patients with cholangiocarcinoma.

Effect of mucin production on survival in colorectal cancer:A case-control study

AIM： TO investigate the impact of mucin production on prognosis in colorectal cancer, in terms of overall survival （OS） and time to disease progression （TTP） in patients with mucinous compared to those with nonmucinous colorectal cancer （NMCRC）, matched for age, gender, and tumor stage. METHODS： Thirty five patients with mucinous colorectal cancer （MCRC） were matched for age, gender, and tumor stage with 35 controls having NMCRC. OS and TTP were compared among 4 groups divided according to mucin content： group A （50%-75% mucin）, group B （75%-100% mucin）, group C or controls （〈 50% mucin）. Group D consisted of all patients with tumors having 〈 75% mucin （controls and groups A together）. RESULTS： Median survival in MCRC and NMCRC groups was 46.2 and 112.9 mo, respectively （P = 0.26）. OS in groups A and B was 70.1 and 32.8 mo （P = 0.46）, and in groups B and D was 32.8 and 70.1 mo, respectively （P = 0.143）. TTP in MCRC and NMCRC was 50.17 and 44.77 too, respectively （P = 0.795）. TTP in groups A, B, and D was 70.1, 24.8, and 65.5 too, respectively. Twenty-eight percent of patients with MCRC had poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma versus 8.6% in NMCRC patients （P = 0.028）. CONCLUSION： MCRC is associated with a non-significant decrease in median survival and TTP, particularly when mucin content is 〉 75% of tumor volume. However, it tends to be more poorly differentiated. A larger study matching for stage and grade is needed.

Technology for the Production of Sorghum for Grain in the Vertisols of Campeche, Mexico

This research was conducted in the state of Campeche, Mexico, between 2017 and 2018. On the one hand, the sorghum yield was explored in plots with Vertisol-type soils, which were supplied with rainwater. This had the purpose of knowing the results obtained by the producers in the area. On the other hand, an experiment was established with three factors: the genetic material of sorghum, planting density and fertilization. Finally, different varieties of soybeans and sorghum hybrids were also tested in large plots, to identify those that are best adapted to crop rotation. In the farmers’ plots, the grain yield was between 4377 and 5543 kg∙ha−1. The planting density was from 142,667 to 197,334 plants per hectare, which indicated that, for each unit that increased the planting density, the yield increased by 37.5 grams. The experiment with three factors indicated that the best planting density was 300 thousand plants per hectare, with a grain yield of 5176 kg∙ha−1;and the best hybrids were DKS-32 and SYN5515, with grain yields of 5794 and 3791 kg∙ha−1, respectively;likewise, the best dose of fertilizer was between 150 and 200 kg∙ha−1 of diammonium phosphate, with a grain yield of 4527 - 4562 kg∙ha−1. In relation to crop rotation, the varieties that stood out for their yield were Huasteca 300 and Vernal, in the case of soybeans;and the hybrids DKS-32 and SYN5515, in sorghum. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess the activity of supplementary motor area (SMA) in six right-handed and six left-handed healthy volunteers. Two manual tasks (self-initiated previously practiced and unpredictable visually guided) were used. Quantitative analysis of hemispheric and bilateral SMA activation was described as mean ± standard deviation of hot spots/total spots. The two tasks induced bilateral SMA activation. The laterality of SMA activation was affected by manual dominance. Left SMA was significantly more activated in right- and left-handers while performing the motor tasks with the right hand. Right SMA was more activated in the left-handers when the left hand was used. Task complexity was the most important factor influencing the degree of SMA activation.

The protein intake of the population in the Yucatan Peninsula is based upon the different forms of beans naturally developed. The different ecotypes of creole beans that are grown traditionally have been displaced by improved varieties, thereby turning into a risk of losing a valuable source of germ-plasma. The present study is aimed to identify, collect and preserve several bean species genetic resources grown in Campeche, Mexico, in addition to the development of an identification card with the main phenotypic characteristics and yield components. A total of 33 different samples were collected from nine different municipalities statewide;out of those, 15 were Phaseolus vulgaris and 18 Phaseolus lunatus. The collected samples diversity is reflected in the range of growth habits from the bush to the indeterminate climbing species, being these the most representative with about 29 samples, many of those because of the way the planting is carried out, which is traditionally performed in association with the cultivation of corn. Early samples were identified in this diversity with their cycle ranging from 60 to 120 days after emergence. Samples of Phaseolus lunatus with 1.35 to 2.86 t/ha yield potential were also obtained.

Morphometric, Physicochemical, Thermal, and Rheological Properties of Rice (Oryza sativaL.) Cultivars Indica ×Japonica

The anther culture technical was applied to produce haploid lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The hybrids (K/ A92VM061, K/A92VM067, K/A92VM0611, K/A92VM719, K/A92VM720 and K/A92VM721) were obtained in order to generate new varieties from Indica and Japonica cultivars. Morphometric parameters of the grains were evaluated by image analysis. Flours were prepared from the whole rice grains and physicochemical, thermal and rheological properties, X-ray diffraction pattern and evaluation of color using the CIELAB system were assessed. The hybrids lines showed long (061, 611, 721), medium (719 and 720) and short (067) grains. The rice samples presented lipids (2.6% - 3.2%), protein (11% - 15%), total dietary fiber (8.4% - 10.2%), total starch (65% - 74%) and apparent amylose (5% - 32%) contents. Gelatinization temperature (Tp) was found in the range of 66.1℃ - 79.4℃ with enthalpy (ΔH) value between 3.4 - 8.1 J/g. The retrogradation parameters (temperature and ΔH) were lower than those for gelatinization in all samples. The rice samples presented A-type X-ray diffraction pattern. Rice pastes showed a non-Newtonian behavior and the brightness (L*) characterize the color of the samples. Hybrid rice grains presented morphometric properties more similar to Japonica than Indica variety. Rice hybrid had higher protein content than Indica variety. Apparent amylose, viscosity and gelatinization temperature varied significantly among hybrids and varieties.
