Summary What is already known about this topic?Short-chain chlorinated paraffins(SCCPs)are persistent organic pollutants that are toxic to organisms.Medium-chain chlorinated paraffins(MCCPs)have similar properties.Chlorinated paraffins(CPs)may be biomagnified through the food chain,thereby threatening human health.What is added by this report?The concentrations of SCCP and MCCP in each food sample were 5-265 and 4-306 ng/g,respectively.The estimated dietary exposure to CPs was relatively lower than the threshold set in the current guidelines.What are the implications for public health practice?The production and use of SCCP and MCCP have not been prohibited in China yet.Further studies are needed to assess the health risks through dietary exposure to CPs.

Rapid development has led to a tremendous increase in the volume of solid waste produced in rural China.The annual amount of solid waste produced from Chinese rural areas is approximately 110 million tons.Many small-scale solid waste incinerators have been built in Chinese rural areas.It was speculated that the emissions and potential risks of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs,commonly known as dioxins)and polychlorinated naphthalenes(PCNs)from these incinerators could be serious.A preliminary case investigation on PCDD/F and PCN emissions from a small-scale waste incinerator was performed.The stack gas samples were collected using auto isokinetic sampling techniques and PCDD/F and PCN congeners were identified and quantified by high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry.Concentrations and toxic equivalents of PCDD/Fs emitted from the small-scale waste incinerator were 153 ngm^-3 and 5.6 ng TEQ m^-3,respectively,which was much higher than the regulatory level for municipal solid waste incinerators permitted in China and the European Union Directive.PCNs have similar toxicological effects with PCDD/Fs,and the relative potency factors(RPFs)of some PCN congeners(dioxin-like PCNs)to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin(TCDD)were previously proposed to evaluate the dioxin-like toxicity of PCNs.The mass concentrations of PCNs and dioxin-like PCNs from the small-scale solid incinerator were 2927 ngm^-3 and 1137 ngm^-3,much higher than that of dioxins.However,much less attention has been paid to the small-scale incinerators compared with municipal solid waste incinerators.Here,we proposed that there should be a growing need to focus on the emissions and potential risks of dioxins and dioxin-like pollutants from these small-scale waste incinerators in rural China.

Determination of hexabromocyclododecanes in sediments from the Haihe River in China by an optimized HPLC–MS–MS method

Hexabromocyclododecanes（HBCDs）,a new type of persistent organic pollutants widely used as brominated flame retardants,have attracted wide attention due to their increasing level and toxicity. A method based on high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry（HPLC–MS–MS）in electrospray ionization mode has been developed by optimization of various parameters,which effectively improved the separation degree and responsive intensity of α-,β-and γ-HBCD isomers. The concentrations and distribution profiles of three HBCD isomers were investigated in sediments from the Haihe River in China.It was observed that the concentrations of HBCDs varied in the range of 0.4–58.82 ng/g,showing a decreasing trend along the flow direction,possibly due to attenuation and biodegradation along the flow direction of the Haihe River. The distribution profile of α-,β-,γ-HBCD was 7.91%–88.6%,0–91.47%,and 0.62%–42.83%,respectively. Interestingly,α-HBCD dominated in most sample sites. This was different from the distribution profile in commercial industrial products,which might be attributed to the inter-transformation and different degradation rates of the three HBCD isomers. The potential ecological risk of HBCDs in sediment was characterized under the two-tiered procedure of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency for environmental risk assessment. Although the HBCDs in the selected section of the Haihe River presented ＂no risk＂ in the sediment compartment,its risk in sediment cannot be neglected since sediment is one of the important sinks and reservoirs of pollutants.

COMPARISONS OF LOW CARBON POLICIES IN SUPPLY CHAIN COORDINATION

This paper investigates the influence of low-carbon policies on channel coordination for a two-echelon supply chain consisting of one supplier and one retailer. Four different models are considered： the basic model, the carbon emission model, the carbon emission trading model and the carbon tax model. We find that the government policy on all carbon emission models is not universal among the firms as well as the customers. The carbon emission trading policy is always better than the carbon emission policy and the carbon tax policy when the allocated carbon emission quotas are greater than the carbon emissions. The carbon emission trading policy is proved to be an effective mechanism which can motivate the supply chain to reduce carbon emissions. Under certain conditions, the supply chain prefers the carbon emission trading policy with higher carbon price to other policies. In the framework of Stackelberg game with the supplier as the leader, for each carbon policy, the paper presents coordination mechanism with the all-unit wholesale quantity discount contract （AWQD）. We analyze and compare the influence of low-carbon policies on channel coordination for the foul＂ low-carbon policies. Numerical experiments are conducted to examine our findings.

Effects of hexanal fumigation on fungal spoilage and grain quality of stored wheat

The prevention of fungal spoilage is an essential consideration in wheat storage.Recent studies have revealed that volatile organic compounds(VOCs),possibly with natural fungicidal properties,could be produced from stored wheat grains.In this study,the antifungal effect of hexanal,a main component of VOCs from stored wheat,against spoilage fungi on agar plate and in high-moisture wheat grains were investigated via the gas fumigation method.And the impact of hexanal fumigation on grain quality was evaluated through analysis of the malondialdehyde content,fatty acid values,germination percentages and vigor of 16%and 18%moisture wheat grains fumigated with 1.66,2.49,and 3.31 mmol/L hexanal vapor.The results of in vitro antifungal experiments on agar plates revealed that the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum fungicidal(fatal)concentration of hexanal against the five fungi were 4–14 folds and 4–7 folds lower than those of propionic acid,respectively.The fungal spoilage of high-moisture wheat grains inoculated with pure fungal spores and with naturally occurring fungi could be completely inhibited by 1.66 mmol/L hexanal vapor.During 5-week storage of high-moisture wheat grains fumigated with 1.66,2.49,and 3.31 mmol/L hexanal vapor,the malondialdehyde content in high-moisture wheat grains did not change significantly in all samples,and fatty acid values were slightly higher in 18%moisture wheat than in 16%moisture wheat.The germination percentages and vigor of wheat samples decreased with increased hexanal vapor concentrations and moisture content.These results indicated that hexanal fumigation could be used as an alternative chemical control method to prevent the fungal spoilage of postharvest wheat.

Hexachlorobutadiene(HCBD)was classed as a persistent organic pollutant under the Stockholm Convention in 2015.HCBD is mainly an unintentionally produced by-product of chlorinated hydrocarbon(e.g.,trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene)synthesis.Few studies of HCBD formation during chemical production processes have been performed,so HCBD emissions from these potentially important sources are not understood.In this study,HCBD concentrations in raw materials,intermediate products,products,and bottom residues from chemical plants producing chlorobenzene,trichloroethylene,and tetrachloroethylene were determined.The results indicated that HCBD is unintentionally produced at much higher concentrations in trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene plants than chlorobenzene plants.The sum of the HCBD concentrations in the samples from all of the trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene production stages in plant PC was 247000µg/mL,about three orders of magnitude higher than the concentrations in the tetrachloroethylene production samples(plant PB)and about six orders of magnitude higher than the concentrations in the chlorobenzene production samples(plant PA).The HCBD concentrations were highest in bottom residues from all of the plants.The concentrations in the bottom residue samples contributed 24%–99%of the total HCBD formed in the chemical production plants.The bottom residue,being hazardous waste,could be disposed of by incineration.The HCBD concentrations were much higher in intermediate products than raw materials,indicating that HCBD formed during production of the intended chemicals.The results indicate the concentrations of HCBD unintentionally produced in typical chemical plants and will be useful in developing protocols for controlling HCBD emissions to meet the Stockholm Convention requirements.

This study investigates the scheduling problem ofmultiple agile optical satelliteswith large-scale tasks.This problem is difficult to solve owing to the time-dependent characteristic of agile optical satellites,complex constraints,and considerable solution space.To solve the problem,we propose a scheduling method based on an improved sine and cosine algorithm and a task merging approach.We first establish a scheduling model with task merging constraints and observation action constraints to describe the problem.Then,an improved sine and cosine algorithm is proposed to search for the optimal solution with the maximum profit ratio.An adaptive cosine factor and an adaptive greedy factor are adopted to improve the algorithm.Besides,a taskmerging method with a task reallocation mechanism is developed to improve the scheduling efficiency.Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the comparison algorithms.

IL2-inducible T-cell Kinase is Required for HBV-induced Type T Interferon Expression and Antiviral Response

Background and Aims:Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus(HBV),and is seen as a serious global health problem.HBV infection induces the expression of type I interferon(IFN),including IFN-αand IFN-β,which have anti-HBV activities,and have been used for HBV treatment.IL2-inducible T-cell kinase(ITK)is a tyrosine kinase,which regulates T-cell differentiation and activation,while its precise effects on type I IFN production during HBV infection remain unknown.Methods:We monitored the ITK expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs)from healthy donors and patients with acute and chronic HBV infection.We used ITK inhibitor ibrutinib to treat hepatocytes and evaluated the type I IFN expression after HBV infection.We also administrated ibrutinib to mice and evaluated its effect on HBV infection in vivo.We generated ITK,suppressor of cytokine signaling 1(SOCS1)knockout and ITK/SOCS1 double knockout cells using CRISPR,and monitored the HBV-induced type I IFN production.Results:ITK and type I IFN were upregulated in patients with acute HBV infection.Inhibition of ITK by ibrutinib suppressed HBVinduced expression of type I IFN mRNA in mice.ITK knockout cells had decreased IRF3 activation but promoted the expression of SOCS1.ITK negatively regulated SOSC1 expression.The down regulation of type I IFN in ITK knockout cells after HBV stimulation was abolished in the absence of SOCS1.Conclusions:ITK regulated HBV-induced expression of type I IFN mRNA by modulating SOCS1.
