The novel bimetallic Sn-Im/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by three methods for NO reduction by propene were investigated. The results showed that the catalytic activity was enhanced significantly in the presence of H2O on sol-gel catalyst, and the maximum NO conversion increased from 46% to 92%, even in the presence of 100 ppm SO2, NO conversion was still 80%.

The efficiency of EDTA, HNO3 and CaCl2 as extractants to remove Pb, Zn and Cu from tailing soils without varying soil pH was investigated with distributions of Pb, Zn and Cu being determined before and after extraction using the sequential extraction procedure of the optimized European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). Results indicated that EDTA and HNO3 were both effective extracting *** extractability of extractants for Pb and Zn was in the order EDTA > HNO3 > CaCl2, while for Cu it was HNO3 > EDTA > CaCl2. After EDTA extraction, the proportion of Pb, Zn and Cu in the four fractions varied greatly, which was related to the strong extraction and complexation ability. Before and after extraction with HNO3 and CaCl2, the percentages of Pb, Zn and Cu in the reducible, oxidizable and residual fractions changed little compared to the acid-extractable fraction. The lability of metal in the soil and the kinds of extractants were the factors controlling the effects of metal extraction.

Implementing surviving sepsis campaign bundles in China： a prospective cohort study

Background Surviving sepsis campaign （SSC） bundles have been demonstrated to significantly improve survival in sepsis and septic shock patients worldwide. Compliance with these protocols and resultant mortality in sepsis patients was investigated in intensive care units （ICUs） in China. Methods Adult patients with severe sepsis or septic shock treated from September 2007 to October 2008 in 11 ICUs of Chinese teaching hospitals were included. The primary outcome was compliance with resuscitation and management bundles. Secondary outcomes included individual bundle protocol impact and the effects of the completed bundle protocol number on 28-day mortality. Results Overall compliance during 6-hr resuscitation and 24-hour management bundles were 5.5% and 17.4%, respectively, and 28-day mortality was 33.0%. Compliance with protocols for blood cultures before antibiotics （42.2%）, central venous pressure 〉8 mmHg （65.9%）, central venous oxygen saturation 〉70% （25.0%）, and optimized glucose control （82.1%）, were significantly associated with decreased 28-day mortality （P 〈0.05）. When adjusted for age, acute organ dysfunction, and APACHE II score, compliance with the blood culture before antibiotics protocol produced the most significant decrease in 28-day mortality （OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.16-0.70; P=0.004）. Compliance with z5 protocols in the 6-hour resuscitation bundle was also associated with lower 28-day mortality in septic shock patients （OR, 0.17; 95% CI, 0.06-0.54; P = 0.001）. Conclusions Compliance with resuscitation and management bundles is generally poor in China; however, when applied, 6-hour resuscitation bundle are associated with significant reductions in 28-day mortality for sepsis patients.

Oil spills in the sea have caused many serious environmental problems worldwide. In this study, carbon nanotube （CNT） sponges were used to cleanup oil slicks on sea waters. This method was compared with two traditional representative sorbents, including polypropylene fiber fabric and woolen felt. The CNT sponges had a larger oil sorption capacity than the other two sorbents. The maximum oil sorption capacity （Qm） of the CNT sponge was 92.30 g/g, which was 12 to 13.5 times larger than the Qm of the other two sorbents （the Qm of the polypropylene fiber fabric and woolen felt were 7.45 and 6.74 g/g, respectively）. In addition, unlike the other two sorbents, the CNT sponge was super- hydrophobic and did not adsorb any water during oil spill cleanup. CNT sponges are potentially very useful for cleaning up oil spills from sea water.

Traditional stabilization of backfilling material is done by using Portland cement. However, the high price of cement forced mining engineer s to seek cheaper binding materials. Fly ash, which is the indus- trial wast e from thermal power plant, possess the potential activity of jellification, and can b e used in cemented fill as a partial substitute for cement to reduce the fill co s t. Tests were done during the past few years in xinqiao Pyrite Mine and Phoenix Copper Mine to determine the technology parameters and the suitable content of f ly ash. Specimens with different cement/fly/ash tailings (sands) ratios were tes ted to obtain the strength values of the fill mass based on the analyses of both the chemical composition and physical and mechanical properties of fly ash . The compressive strength of specimens with a ratio of 1∶2∶8 (cement to fly ash to tailings ) can reach 2 MPa after 90 d curing, totally meeting the requiremen t of artificial pillar and reducing the fill cost by 20%-30%.

Joint Analysis Method for Major Genes Controlling Multiple Correlated Quantitative Traits

Based on the major gene and polygene mixed inheritance model for multiple correlated quantitative traits, the authors proposed a new joint segregation analysis method of major gene controlling multiple correlated quantitative traits, which include major gene detection and its effect and variation estimation. The effect and variation of major gene are estimated by the maximum likelihood method implemented via expectation-maximization （EM） algorithm. Major gene is tested with the likelihood ratio （LR） test statistic. Extensive simulation studies showed that joint analysis not only increases the statistical power of major gene detection but also improves the precision and accuracy of major gene effect estimates. An example of the plant height and the number of tiller of F2 population in rice cross Duonieai x Zhonghua 11 was used in the illustration. The results indicated that the genetic difference of these two traits in this cross refers to only one pleiotropic major gene. The additive effect and dominance effect of the major gene are estimated as -21.3 and 40.6 cm on plant height, and 22.7 and -25.3 on number of tiller, respectively. The major gene shows overdominance for plant height and close to complete dominance for number of tillers.
