Use of radiation in strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae:A new technique for industrial applications

During the industrial fermentation process in the production of fuel ethanol, yeasts are subject to several stressing conditions. The survival and the permanence of strains introduced in the process correlate with the capability of these yeasts in resisting to physical and chemical stresses, as well as their recovering ability to compete with contaminating micro-organisms commonly present in this industrial process. We aim at the selection of Saccharomyces cere visiae strains having this capability and ability. In this sense, cultivations of strains with industrial interest were irradiated with gammas ray at a wide dose interval. Growing curves for the strains were analyzed by means of their relative growth, a new concept here introduced, which allows a better understanding of the growing and recovering processes following radiative stress. It was found that gamma radiation could be used as an alternative method to quantify growing capabilities of S. cerevisiae strains under stressing conditions. It was also shown that this radiological method could be utilized as an additional procedure to select best robust industrial strains. This radiological method simplifies traditional analysis of strain viability, by avoiding the great number of necessary and consecutive fermentation assays.

BAcKGROUND The healthcare impact of obesity is enormous,and there have been calls for new approaches to containing the epidemic *** invasive procedures have become more popular,with one of the most widely used being endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty(ESG).Although major adverse events after ESG are rare,some can cause considerable *** our knowledge,there has been no previous report of biliary ascites after *** SUMMARY A 48-year-old female with obesity refractory to lifestyle changes and prior gastric balloon placement underwent uncomplicated ESG and was discharged on the following *** postoperative day 3,she developed abdominal pain,which led to an emergency department visit the following *** was readmitted to the hospital,with poor general health status and signs of peritoneal *** tomography imaging showed fluid in the abdominal *** revealed biliary ascites and showed that the gallbladder was sutured to the gastric *** patient underwent cholecystectomy and lavage of the abdominal cavity and was admitted to the intensive care unit *** 7 d of antibiotic therapy and 20 d of hospitalization,she was ***,6 mo later,she presented in excellent general condition and with a 20.2%weight *** ESG is a safe ***,adverse events can still occur,and precautions should be taken by the *** general,patient position,depth of tissue acquisition,location of stitch placement,and endoscopist experience are all important factors to consider to mitigate procedural risk.

Environmental sustainability issues and the costs of new power generation and transmission have increased the interest in evolving current power grid to new technologies. The Smart Grid is a promising technology, since it allows a distributed computing approach with potentials for self-diagnosing/-healing, reliable multi-user communication and fast hard real-time control. However, the missing standardization associated with heterogeneity of legacy systems and wide-area service demands, makes very challenging to adopt Smart Grid in a cost-effective way. By considering this, we propose the Session-Oriented communication System (SOcSys) to overcome the above issues by enhancing Smart Grid with truly reliable and robust capabilities over heterogeneous environments. SOcSys achieves this goal by orchestrating session-control with innovative network-centric facilities operating over a wireless mesh Information Network compliant with IEEE 802.11e/s standard. The simulation results show that SOcSys improved network performance in terms of bandwidth utilization and minimization of delay, while consuming low network resources. Graphical analyses showed that SOcSys supported multimedia sessions with excellent quality, where it outperforms the experiments with regular settings.

Data Mining of Spatio-Temporal Variability of chlorophyll-a concentrations in a Portion of the Western Atlantic with Low Performance Hardware

The contemporary scientific literature that deals with the dynamics of marine chlorophyll-a concentration is already customarily employing data mining techniques in small geographic areas or regional samples. However, there is little focus on the issue of missing data related to chlorophyll-a concentration estimated by remote sensors. Intending to provide greater scope to the identification of the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of marine chlorophyll-a concentrations, and to improve the reliability of results, this study presents a data mining approach to cluster similar chlorophyll-a concentration behaviors while implementing an iterative spatiotemporal interpolation technique for missing data inference. Although some dynamic behaviors of said concentrations in specific areas are already known by specialists, systematic studies in large geographical areas are still scarce due to the computational complexity involved. For this reason, this study analyzed 18 years of NASA satellite observations in one portion of the Western Atlantic Ocean, totaling more than 60 million records. Additionally, performance tests were carried out in low-cost computer systems to check the accessibility of the proposal implemented for use in computational structures of different sizes. The approach was able to identify patterns with high spatial resolution, accuracy and reliability, rendered in low-cost computers even with large volumes of data, generating new and consistent patterns of spatiotemporal variability. Thus, it opens up new possibilities for data mining research on a global scale in this field of application.

Prevalence of the Nursing Diagnosis Lack of Adherence in People Living with AIDS

Introduction: In the 1990s, the development of highly active combination antiretroviral therapy in the treatment of AIDS was highlighted. The great benefit generated by the use of this treatment was the prolongation of survival of the people who got this disease, since it is no longer considered fatal, becoming a chronic condition. Objective: To identify the prevalence of the nursing diagnosis Lack of Adherence, its defining characteristics and related factors in people living with AIDS, to investigate the association between them and the prevalence rates. Methods: cross-sectional study with 113 patients in a hospital in northeastern Brazil. For data analysis, the test of Pearson chi-square and Fisher’s exact test were used, and also calculated the prevalence rates. Results: Lack of Adherence diagnosis was present in 69% of the sample investigated. The defining characteristics and related factors that are statistically associated with that diagnosis were: lack of adherence behavior, missing scheduled appointments, complications related to development, insufficient skills to implement the system and complex treatment system. The first two characteristics had the highest chances for the development of this diagnosis. conclusion: The study showed that the diagnostic studied was prevalent in these patients and 3 characteristics and 2 factors showed significant association.

Fluid Leakage in Submerged Offshore Pipeline: An Analysis of Oil Dispersion in Seawater

Leakages in oil pipelines can cause financial losses and several environmental damages, where large-scale offshore oil and gas exploration results in large releases of oil and gas into ocean waters. In the event of oil leakage, an immediate and adequate response is required to reduce environmental damage, such as containment barriers, for example, which depends on the agglomeration of oil particles, velocity and tendency to propagation. Thus, the understanding of the fluid flow behavior around of subsea pipeline at different depths is crucial. On the other hand, the knowledge of interfacial phenomena of immiscible liquids allows the process of adjective migration in submarine pipelines. consequently, this science enables the prediction of the behavior and the geometric shape of the water-oil interface and provides a phenomenological foundation concerning the theories of perturbation, the stability criteria and mathematical modeling, as well as the flow patterns in the neighborhoods and submerged pipelines. From this perspective, this work aims to study the oil dispersion in sea water caused by leakage in a submerged pipeline. Here, a two-dimensional mathematical model based on the mass and linear momentum conservation equations and the standard k-ε turbulence model, was developed. The dynamic behavior of the oil and water phases is evaluated by pressure fields, surface velocity, volumetric fraction and velocity vectors. Simulation results show the presence of oil flux from the pipe to the marine stream and vice-versa. Further, the increase in oil velocity at the pipe inlet leads to an increase in pressure drop.

The search for therapeutic agents that will provide the ground for man and an improvement in their quality of life is ceaseless. The nerol (cis-2,6-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-8-ol) is a monoterpene which can be found in various medicinal plants as Lippia spp and Melissa officinalis L. The objective of this study was to analyze the acute effect of nerol in the central nervous system (cNS) by performing behavioral tests in mice (open field, elevated plus-maze, light/dark and rota rod tests). We used male albino mice (Mus musculus), Swiss variety, adult with 2 month-old. The animals were divided into five groups (n = 8) for each experimental protocol, and they were administered intraperitoneally (i.p.), respectively, Tween 80 0.05% dissolved in saline solution 0.9%, nerol (30, 60 or 90 mg/kg) or diazepam (2 mg/kg). In the open field test, all groups treated with nerol showed a significant decrease in motor activity (number of crossings, rearings and groomings) when compared with vehicle group. In the elevated plus-maze test, nerol groups significantly increased the number of entries and time of permanence in the open arms when compared with vehicle group. In the light-dark test, nerol groups showed a significant increase the time of permanence in the room clear when compared with vehicle group. In the rota rod test, the groups treated with nerol didn’t show modification in time spent and number of falls in the revolving bar when compared with vehicle group. These results indicate a possible anxiolytic effect of nerol in mice.

We describe key production-related traits of trahira(Hoplias malabaricus),an aquaculture candidate species,in a semi-intensive fish farming *** quantified growth from hatch through grow-out at two stocking densities and evaluated fillet protein,lipids and fatty-acid *** made 2430 observations of growth and morphometrics on 270 juvenile fish allocated to four fish ponds,two at 5 fish/m^(2)(90 animals)and two at 10 fish/m^(2)(180 animals)through 11 *** fish reached an average length of 27.5 cm(±0.38)and 27.0 cm(±0.24),and weight of 263.0 g(±10.54)and 246.7 g(±6.89),respectively,at the low and high *** was no significant difference in weight(P>0.05)between the densities for any of the parameters assessed,and hence the same growth curve applied to both densities(A=292.9;B=28.1;and K=0.65).Standard length,however,differed significantly(Pcking densities,total lipids increased throughout the trial,while protein content *** acid(c18:0)increased throughout the experimental period,while docosahexaenoic acid and the n3/n6 profile decreased,with no differences among stocking *** malabaricus may prove a viable aquaculture species in Neotropical regions,where development of native species may contribute to sustainable aquaculture production.

本期《休克》涵盖基础研究、转化研究和临床研究等方面内容。在基础研究方面,Isabelle Sobbe等人利用产志贺毒素(Stx)的大肠杆菌感染小鼠模型研究了溶血性尿毒症综合征的病理生理学,并探讨了Stx引发的受感染生物的免疫反应是否会影响肾脏并导致急性肾损伤(AKI)。他们通过观察Stx攻击小鼠后肾脏的蛋白和基因表达,检测到NF-κB1、RelA以及NFκB2和RelB移位到细胞核中的现象更加明显,同时NF-κB1靶细胞因子ccL20、cXcL2、ccL2、cXcL1、IL-6、TNF-a、cXcL10和ccL5的基因表达也有增加。
