Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) wine as a novel potential functional food product

Throughout human civilization, elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) has been used as a traditional drug and addition to various dishes. Although it is a widespread plant species, it is still being researched and rarely used to obtain new products. In this study, we focused on the chemical and phytochemical composition and biological and pharmacological effects of elderberry wine, obtained by applying different temperature treatments (without temperature treatment – W1;60 °C, 5 min – W2;60 °C, 10 min – W3;and 70 °C, 5 min – W4 ). HPLC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric techniques determined the chemical and phytochemical profiles of obtained wines. The main compounds in analyzed wines were p-Hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic and chlorogenic acids, quercetin, quercetin-3-O-hexoside, and rutin . To assess the biological potential, antioxidant, neuroprotective (acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition), antityrosinase, and antidiabetic (amylase inhibition and glucosidase inhibition) abilities were examined. Wine W4 showed the strongest antioxidant activity, which correlated well with the high phenol content. The best inhibitory effect of β-glucosidase was observed in wine W3 . However, the most potent tyrosinase inhibitor was wine W4 . The presented results prove elderberry wine's high biological and industrial potential and open new avenues for formulating new products that could be brought to market.

Colorectal cancer mortality trends in Serbia during 1991–2010:an age-period-cohort analysis and a joinpoint regression analysis

Background: For both men and women worldwide, colorectal cancer is among the leading causes of cancer-related death. This study aimed to assess the mortality trends of colorectal cancer in Serbia between 1991 and 2010, prior to the introduction of population-based ***: Joinpoint regression analysis was used to estimate average annual percent change(AAPC) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval(CI). Furthermore, age-period-cohort analysis was performed to examine the effects of birth cohort and calendar period on the observed temporal ***: We observed a significantly increased trend in colorectal cancer mortality in Serbia during the study period(AAPC = 1.6%, 95% CI 1.3%–1.8%). Colorectal cancer showed an increased mortality trend in both men(AAPC –2.2%) and women(AAPC rend of colorectal cancer mo= 2.0%, 95% CI 1.7%= 1.0%, 95% CI 0.6%–1.4%). The temporal trtality was significantly affected by birth cohort(P < 0.05), whereas the study period did not significantly affect the trend(P = 0.072). Colorectal cancer mortality increased for the first several birth cohorts in Serbia(from 1916 to 1955), followed by downward flexion for people born after the 1960 s. According to comparability test, overall mortality trends for colon cancer and rectal and anal cancer were not parallel(the final selected model rejected parallelism, P < 0.05).Conclusions: We found that colorectal cancer mortality in Serbia increased considerably over the past two decades. Mortality increased particularly in men, but the trends were different according to age group and subsite. In Serbia, interventions to reduce colorectal cancer burden, especially the implementation of a national screening program, as well as treatment improvements and measures to encourage the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, are needed.

Engineering-Geological Problems in the Moravian Karst,Czech Republic

The Moravian karst belongs to one of the famous karst regions in Central Europe. It is situated in Moravia in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. According to the geology it is of Devonian age and the main rocks are of different types of limestones. The process of karstification is still active. They are many caves with rich stalagmites and stalactites and the Macocha abyss, the depth of which is 138.5 m. The underground Punkva River flows through the main part of the karst, forming beautiful underground lakes. Typical karst phenomena, such as sinkholes and deep canyons, may be observed on the surface of the terrain. Because of the karstification, water erosion and frost weathering, many steep unstable slopes and walls originated. To solve the stability from a geotechnical point of view is not easy. This requests a special engineering-geological knowledge and experience.

Despite a decline in incidence and mortality during the last decades,stomach cancer is one of the main health challenges *** to the GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates,stomach cancer caused approximately 800000 deaths(accounting for 7.7%of all cancer deaths),and ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both genders *** 1.1 million new cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed in 2020(accounting for 5.6%of all cancer cases).About 75%of all new cases and all deaths from stomach cancer are reported in *** cancer is one of the most lethal malignant tumors,with a five-year survival rate of around 20%.There are some well-established risk factors for stomach cancer:Helicobacter pylori infection,dietary factors,tobacco,obesity,and *** date,the most important way of preventing stomach cancer is reduced exposure to risk factors,as well as screening and early *** research on risk factors can help identify various opportunities for more effective *** programs for stomach cancer have been implemented in a few countries,either as a national or opportunistic screening of high-risk individuals ***,due to its high aggressiveness and heterogeneity,stomach cancer still remains a severe global health problem.

Local Proinflammatory Effects of Repeated Skin Exposure to Warfarin, An Anticoagulant Rodenticide in Rats

Objective： To evaluate the effects of epicutaneous application of anticoagulant warfarin, by examining the presence of tissue injury and immune/inflammatory activity in exposed skin. Methods： Rats were exposed to warfarin by applying 10 μg of warfarin‐sodium to 10‐12 cm 2 skin （range 0.8‐1 μg per 1 cm 2 ） for 3 consecutive days. Tissue injury was evaluated by lipid peroxidation, histomorphological changes and signs of reparative activity in skin. T cell infiltration and selected aspects of epidermal cell activity were examined as indicators of immune/inflammatory skin response to warfarin application. Results： Repeated warfarin application exerted no effect on skin metabolic viability, but resulted in tissue injury （increased malondialdehyde, MDA, production, evident histo‐morphological changes in epidermis and dermis depicting cell injury and death）. Increased numbers of proliferating cell nuclear antigen （PCNA ＋） cells indicated reparative processes in injured skin. Infiltration of CD3 ＋ cells （T lymphocytes） along with the increased production of tumor necrosis factor‐α （TNF‐α） by epidermal cells from warfarin‐treated skin and their co‐stimulatory effect in an in vitro T‐cell activation assay demonstrated immunomodulatory effects of epicutaneous warfarin. Conclusion： Presented data have documented tissue damage associated with immune/ inflammatory activity in skin exposed to warfarin. Observed effects are relevant to immunotoxic potential of this anticoagulant in settings of external exposure.

Epidemiology of pancreatic cancer

Cancer of the pancreas remains one of the deadliest cancer types. Based on the GLOBOCAN 2012 estimates, pancreatic cancer causes more than 331000 deaths per year, ranking as the seventh leading cause of cancer death in both sexes together. Globally, about 338000 people had pancreatic cancer in 2012, making it the 11^(th) most common cancer. The highest incidence and mortality rates of pancreatic cancer are found in developed countries. Trends for pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality varied considerably in the world. A known cause of pancreatic cancer is tobacco smoking. This risk factor is likely to explain some of the international variations and gender differences. The overall five-year survival rate is about 6%(ranges from 2% to 9%), but this vary very small between developed and developing countries. To date, the causes of pancreatic cancer are still insufficiently known, although certain risk factors have been identified, such as smoking, obesity, genetics, diabetes, diet, inactivity. There are no current screening recommendations for pancreatic cancer, so primary prevention is of utmost importance. A better understanding of the etiology and identifying the risk factors is essential for the primary prevention of this disease.

Cancer mortality in Serbia, 1991-2015: an age-period-cohort and joinpoint regression analysis

Background:As the result of dramatic political changes,civil wars,and a long-term refugee crisis from the end of the last to beginning of this century,the population of Serbia has experienced significant health *** aim of this study was to assess cancer mortality trends in ***:This nationwide study was carried out to analyze cancer mortality in Serbia during 1991-2015 using offi-cial *** age-standardized mortality rates(per 100,000)were calculated by direct standardization,using the world standard population by *** average annual percent change(AAPC)and corresponding 95%confidence interval(CI)were computed using joinpoint regression ***-period-cohort analysis was performed to address the possible underlying reasons for the observed temporal ***:Over the 25-year study period,there were 466,075 cancer deaths(266,043 males and 200,032 females)in *** cancer mortality increased between 1991 and 2009 in both males(by+0.9%per year)and females(by+0.8%per year)and has been decreasing since then,by−0.9%annually in both *** almost all major cancers except stomach cancer,cancer mortality in Serbia demonstrated upward trends during the study *** largest increases were noted in lung cancer among females(AAPC=+3.7,95%CI 3.5-3.9)and prostate cancer in males(AAPC=+1.9,95%CI 1.4-2.3).Conclusions:After two decades of increase,cancer mortality rates are finally declining in *** this,these rates place Serbia among the countries with the highest cancer mortality in the world.
