Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a disease produced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and it is currently causing a catastrophic pandemic affecting humans *** disease has been lethal for approximately 3.12 million people around the world since January ***,among the most affected countries,Mexico ranks third in deaths after the United States of America and *** the high number of deceased people might also be explained by social aspects and lifestyle customs in Mexico,there is a relationship between this high proportion of deaths and comorbidities such as high blood pressure(HBP),type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic *** official epidemiological figures reported by the Mexican government have indicated that 18.4%of the population suffers from HBP,close to 10.3%of adults suffer from type 2 diabetes,and approximately 36.1%of the population suffers from *** in the gut microbiota(GM)have been associated with these diseases and with COVID-19 severity,presumably due to inflammatory *** data about the association between GM dysbiosis and metabolic diseases could suggest that the high levels of susceptibility to SARSCoV-2 infection and COVID-19 morbidity in the Mexican population are primarily due to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic syndrome.

A Structural and Morphological Study of LiCo_1-XSm_XO_Y Powders Obtained by the Sol-Gel Method

In this study, the synthesis of LiCo1-XSmXOy powders (X = 0.002, 0.004, 0.006, 0.008, and 0.1) by the sol-gel method and the influence of Sm on their structural and morphological properties is reported for the first time. The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies show that LiCoO2 powders synthesized at temperatures up to 700°C present a characteristic hexagonal crystalline phase of the α-NaFeO2 type (space group R-3m), revealing a shift in the (0 0 3) Bragg reflection, which reflects the presence of Sm in the crystalline structure. The morphology was spheroidal and, on average, 122 nm in size. Based on the data obtained, LiCo1-XSmXOy powders (X = 0.002, 0.004, 0.006, 0.008, and 0.1) show promise as a material for use in the cathodes of lithium-ion batteries.

Piwi-interacting RNAs(piRNAs of 26-32 nt in length)regulate gene expression,epigenetics,and transcriptional and post-transcriptional processes.1 In humans,piRNAs are expressed in germline and somatic tissues,and generally have a uracil at the 5'-end(position+1),an adenine at the+10 position,and are 2'-0 methylated at the 3'-end.2 Onice piRNAs form the RNA-induced silencing complex(RISC)with PIWl proteins,they serve as guides to find their complementary sequences of the target mRNA,thus initiating their *** Wuhan patient's genome is approximately 265 nucleotides(nts)in its 3'-UTR;piRNAs-like sequences have been reported in this region.3 Our objective was to search,through bioinformatics,for mRNA sequences that were homologous to the reverse complementary of the previously reported piRNA-like sequences from the 3'-UTR of SARS-Cov-2,3 and identify the possible interaction between them.

Maximum Entropy Ecological Niche Prediction of the Current Potential Geographical Distribution of <i>Eimeria</i>Species of Cattle, Sheep and Goats in Mexico

Coccidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease caused by parasites of the genus Eimeria. To produce the ecological niche model for the geographic distribution of Eimeria species, the maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt) was used and 19 bioclimatic variables with a spatial resolution of 30 arc-seconds (approximately 1 km2) were downloaded from the World Climate Database. These were reduced to BIO2, BIO3, BIO4, BIO7 and BIO15 for each species after examining cross-correlations among them to account multicollinearity. A jackknife analysis was included to assess the contribution of five bioclimatic variables and the fit of the model was evaluated with the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Under a current climate scenario, the jackknife evaluation of the MaxEnt model showed that BIO4 (temperature seasonality) made the greatest contribution to the distribution model for 22 Eimeria species;whereas BIO7 (temperature annual range) was the most important factor that contributes to the distribution model of 10 species. The habitat suitability model based on the maximum entropy theory was supported by AUC values higher than 0.9 and predicted that the suitable habitats for different species of Eimeria are present in southern, eastern and western areas of Mexico. Our study may support future studies exploring factors that constrain the distribution of Eimeria as well as strategies aimed at reducing the disease prevalence.

Increased myo-inositol in the posterior cingulate cortex in first-episode major depressive patients

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe, disabling pathology characterized, in addition to affective, cognitive and motor symptoms, by self-focused attention and rumination. During recursive self-focused processes and rumination, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is activated. In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a noninvasive imaging technique that can directly assess living biochemistry in localized brain regions. The aim of this study, therefore, was to use 1H-MRS as a means of analyzing brain metabolites in the PCC of a group of first-episode, unmedicated MDD patients. PCC metabolite levels were analyzed at 3-T in a single voxel located bilaterally over the PCC in 7 patients diagnosed for the first time with MDD and with no previous pharmacological treatment, as well as in 9 control subjects. Differences in metabolite levels between groups were compared using independent t-tests. Myo-inositol was significantly higher, and NAA + NAAG/Cr significantly lower, in MDD patients than in controls. The other brain metabolites showed no statistical differences. The present results suggest that alterations in PCC metabolite levels are likely involved in MDD pathophysiology, and may help to improve our understanding of MDD and the role of the PCC in some symptoms of depression.

Medical versus surgical treatment for early pregnancy loss in infertile patients: Which approach facilitates more rapid return to subsequent treatment cycle?

Patients and physicians confront a challenging dynamic when an early pregnancy loss (EPL) occurs after fertility treatment (FT). Our study focused on the time to resumption of FT in patients managed medically (Cytotec) compared to in those managed surgically with dilatation and curettage (D&C). A retrospective analysis from 2003-2010 of patients receiving treatment for an EPL. Misoprostol (Cytotec) patients were compared with a randomly selected control group (D&C). Both the time from the date of treatment to the date at which βhCG reached x2. No statistical significance was observed for resumption of FT between groups. Cytotec group had a greater maintenance of retained products of conception versus D&C population (26% vs 2%;p = 0.01). More D&C patients received karyotype results (68% vs 5%). A significant difference was not found in resumption time to the next fertility treatment between the medically and surgical treatment. More medically managed patients RPOC requiring D&C. Although a D&C is more likely to provide karyotype results, medical management is a viable alternative.

Interferon-gamma(IFN-γ)plays a dual role in cancer;it is both a pro-and an antitumorigenic cytokine,depending on the type of *** deregulation of the IFN-γcanonic pathway is associated with several disorders,including vulner-ability to viral infections,inflammation,and cancer *** particular,the interplay between lung adenocarcinoma(LUAD)and viral infections appears to exist in association with the deregulation of IFN-γ*** this mini-review,we investigated the status of the IFN-γsignaling pathway and the expression level of its components in ***,a reduction in IFNGR1 expression seems to be associated with LUAD progression,affecting defenses against viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus *** addition,alterations in the expression of IFNGR1 may inhibit the antiproliferative action of IFN-γsignaling in LUAD.

Active Peptides and Motifs within Collagen and Other ECM Proteins

Collagens are the most abundant proteins in mammals and form an extracellular matrix (ECM) with other components as the structural support of muscle, skin, corneas and blood vessels etc. Other than providing structural support, the ECM exhibits active communication with cells and influences many cellular processes including migration, wound healing, differentiation and cancer metastasis. Though collagen proteins contain highly repetitive primary sequences and defined tertiary structures, more and more studies have shown that many short peptides/motifs within collagen proteins play key roles in various biological processes. These short sequences are effective within triple helical structures or independently as stand-alone molecules resulting from proteolytic degradation. Besides endogenous ECM-derived peptides, many more functional peptides have been produced by tissue processing, chemical synthesis, and recombinant protein production. In this review, we summarize different peptides/motifs identified in collagen and other ECM proteins and discuss their potential for medical, personal care, and cosmetics applications.
